The presidential election results are settled. But the battle over new voting rules, especially for mail-in ballots, has just begun.

 WASHINGTON — In Georgia, Arizona and other states won by President Biden, some leading Republicans stood up in November to make what, in any other year, would be an unremarkable statement: The race is over. And we lost, fair and square. I

But that was then. Now, in statehouses nationwide, Republicans who echoed former President Donald J. Trump’s baseless claims of rampant fraud are proposing to make it harder to vote next time — ostensibly to convince the very voters who believed them that elections can be trusted again. And even some colleagues who defended the legitimacy of the November vote are joining them.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, state legislators have filed 106 bills to tighten election rules, generally making it harder to cast a ballot — triple the number at this time last year. In short, Republicans who for more than a decade have used wildly inflated allegations of voter fraud to justify making it harder to vote, are now doing so again, this time seizing on Mr. Trump’s thoroughly debunked charges of a stolen election to push back at Democratic-leaning voters who flocked to mail-in ballots last year.

"Marjorie Taylor Green, the newly elected congresswoman, has supported QAnon, and the disgusting view that the Sandy Hook, Parkland and Las Vegas mass shootings were false flag operations. She has called for Pelosi's assassination. 

The more you look at her, the more despicable she appears. She remains seated in Congress, remains likely to be seated on a committee, and remains undenounced by the vast majority of her colleagues. She is one of the more egregious examples of the extent to which the Republican Party has been captured by paranoia, madness and lust for violence. There are many others.

Survivors of the 2018 mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, are asking congressional Republicans to publicly censure Marjorie Taylor Greene for suggesting the school shooting was a “false flag” and for harassing a teenage survivor on Capitol Hill in 2019. 

Greene, the newly elected Georgia congresswoman who is known for her support of the pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory, was filmed in March 2019 as she followed 18-year-old David Hogg, one of the students who survived the shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas high school, outside Capitol Hill. 

In the clip from 25 March, Greene can be heard calling Hogg a 'coward,' demanding that he explain how the students were able to set up meetings with so many lawmakers, and telling him that she herself was a gun owner. Greene tells Hogg that gun control will not work, and that his classmates would not have been killed if one of the law enforcement officers assigned to guard the school had 'done his job.' 'She later addresses her viewers, echoing false yet frequently spread conspiracy claims that mass shooting survivors and family members of victims are 'crisis actors' and the attacks that killed their loved ones were staged as a plot to pass gun control laws..."

Not since the Civil War has this nation been so divided. As I look around today it seems as if the divisions of one hundred and sixty years ago remain today. Yes, racism and social injustice does reman intertwined in our national fabric. Whether one wishes to acknowledge it or not.

Donald J. Trump, as bad and incompetent as a leader as he was, did not cause the divisions that divide us. They have been festering below the surface since our nation's bloody Civil War ended.  But he did recognize the depths of the divisions and he saw great political opportunity in exploiting them to achieve his political aspirations.

His ability to recognize the divisions and then exploit them through the continual repetition (see inculcate) of  lies and baseless conspiracy theories was the fuel he threw on the fire that started the blaze that culminated in the insurrection and attempt to overthrow the government on January 6, 2021.

DJT is out of office. Fired by the American people in a landslide free, fair, and secure selection. An election that was certified by all fifty states. But the deep loyalty (cult like loyalty) that DJT was able to develop in his base and the republican party, both national and state, will be around for a very long time.

As more and more is uncovered about the plot to overthrow the federal government it is becoming crystal clear this nation is far closer to widespread nationwide political, social, and economic unrest and violence than some of us perhaps realized. And those who wish to overturn our democracy and democratic republic are unlikely to decide to stop because President Biden and the Democrats are calling for unity.

Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), who has repeatedly flouted the magnetometers that were installed near the House chamber after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, set off the metal detectors while trying to enter. When an officer with a metal detector wand scanned him, a firearm was detected on Harris’s side, concealed by his suit coat. Police refused to let Harris in, and the officer signaled a security agent that Harris had a gun on him by motioning toward his own firearm.

 Mitch McConnell Needs To Go

                The Senate Minority Leader no longer represents 

 conservative voters.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has done very good service for the American people. His Merrick Garland gambit was one of the riskiest and best political plays in congressional history. He has seated an enormous amount of conservative judges. He deserves our thanks for that.

But he also has to sit down now and let the conservative movement grow into its new form — a form he seems completely opposed to.

McConnell is playing a ridiculous game of footsie with the idea of convicting Donald Trump in his absurd impeachment. It’s a bridge too far and an obvious power play, and he lacks the power to pull it off.

American conservatives know that after Democrats all but cheered on violence and rioting for months, the idea that Trump incited an insurrection is pure nonsense. It’s a lie and McConnell’s parroting of it is disqualifying for leadership.

So why is McConnell playing along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s charade of impeachment? He thinks he can get the conservative movement back on his and the Chamber of Commerce’s team.

He can’t. If he pushes this impeachment conviction, as he seems to be, he should have no place in Republican leadership. It is nothing short of a betrayal of Republican voters.

I don’t know who McConnell thinks he is appealing to here. It is obvious that conservative voters have not abandoned Trump, even if he has. He seems to think that we will just go back to the pro-war, pro-corporate party he came up in. We won’t. That party was destroyed by Trump and good riddance.

And why did Cocaine Mitch get the opportunity to fill all these judgeships? Why did his Garland gambit pay off? Only because of Trump. Maybe he forgot but Mitt Romney, his buddy in dragging Trump, lost his bid for the presidency in 2012. But luckily for conservatives, Trump won. And yeah, we have a lot of judges to show for it — because of Trump.

McConnell has power, but he has no constituency. Nobody is lining up to watch him make a speech. Nobody is buying Mitch McConnell merch. That may seem petty, but it isn’t. McConnell represents a Republican Party willing to lose everything as long as big business does well. That’s over. Republican voters won’t have it anymore. They know we are in a culture war that he has no interest in fighting. We need Republican leaders who will.

Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Tom Cotton will fight this fight. These are the leaders we need. McConnell’s GOP was destroyed by Trump, but McConnell still doesn’t know it. He’d rather throw in with those who prefer losing to fighting. No. We aren’t going back to McConnell’s losing coalition. Trump lost, but he brought a new group of people to the GOP.

That is the most important thing. A new working-class, diverse party is the future, not McConnell’s white guys at the Rotary Club. They are welcome to be a part of this new coalition, but if they try to kneecap it, as McConnell is, they can let the door hit them on the way out. Go be a Joe Biden Democrat.

Trump won an election and allowed McConnell to achieve his goals. Now Mitch wants to throw Trump under the bus. We see it. We won’t stand for it. There are better leaders for us in the Senate. Let’s have one. McConnell is so out of touch that a campfire couldn’t burn his fingers. They are insulated by his corporate connections. Let’s be done with that.

Its time for us to take up Trump’s call for a populist conservatism. We have the people, if not the media. But the media follows the people, not the other way around. It is time for new leadership. It is time for Republicans to select a new Senate leader, thank McConnell for his service, and show him the door.

At least 21 state and local Republican officials attended the Jan. 6 rally in Washington, D.C., that turned into a violent riot, according to a new HuffPost tally, many of whom are now under pressure to resign. 

They traveled from 16 different states, arriving for the “Stop the Steal” demonstration on the White House Ellipse, where they watched President Donald Trump tell incendiary lies about having been robbed of reelection. He then told the crowd of thousands to march on the Capitol. 

In the crowd that day were 13 members of state Houses or Assemblies; three state senators; a county commissioner; a city council member; a GOP congressional district chair; a district director; and a co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party. The group also includes a QAnon conspiracy theorist; a self-described member of a fascist militia; and a man who once declared that “the only good Democrat is a dead Democrat.” 

Only two of those GOP officials appear to have breached the Capitol property itself that day, and have since been arrested, but the prevalence of Republican legislators and party functionaries at the demonstration underscores the party’s rank complicity in fomenting a historic insurrection.

With new ideas to combat the multiple problems and challenges that were largely created by the administration of the previous corrupt and inept republican  president. a time of great celebration and yet a time to get down to the serious work of the peoples business.

Yet almost before the new President and Vice President have even begun we see the following from a far rightwing weblog that was (and remains) supportive of the previous president. You know the one. (CNN) - A faction of Senate Republicans has a warning for Minority Leader Mitch McConnell: Stick with former President Donald Trump during his impeachment trial.

McConnell, who is the longest-serving Senate Republican leader in history, has long had strong support within the Senate GOP Conference. But some say if the GOP leader votes to convict Trump, his backing will quickly wane.

"If he does, I don't know if he can stay as leader," said one senior GOP senator who said several of his colleagues held similar views and asked not to be named discussing sensitive internal politics.

Other GOP senators were equally as blunt.

"No, no, no," Sen. Ron Johnson, a Wisconsin Republican and Trump ally, told CNN when asked if he could support McConnell if he voted to convict Trump, calling such a vote a "dangerous precedent" and adding: "I don't even think we should be having a trial."

Lee explains why trumpers are attracted to trump and why trump gravitates towards the violence and destruction we witnessed last Wednesday 1/6/2021 when his supporters, in an act of insurrection and sedition stormed the Capitol in an attempt to intimidate Congress and overturn the presidential election.

What attracts people to Trump? What is their animus or driving force?

The reasons are multiple and varied, but in my recent public-service book, Profile of a Nation, I have outlined two major emotional drives: narcissistic symbiosis and shared psychosis. Narcissistic symbiosis refers to the developmental wounds that make the leader-follower relationship magnetically attractive. The leader, hungry for adulation to compensate for an inner lack of self-worth, projects grandiose omnipotence—while the followers, rendered needy by societal stress or developmental injury, yearn for a parental figure. When such wounded individuals are given positions of power, they arouse similar pathology in the population that creates a “lock and key” relationship.

“Shared psychosis”—which is also called “folie à millions” [“madness for millions”] when occurring at the national level or “induced delusions”—refers to the infectiousness of severe symptoms that goes beyond ordinary group psychology. When a highly symptomatic individual is placed in an influential position, the person’s symptoms can spread through the population through emotional bonds, heightening existing pathologies and inducing delusions, paranoia and propensity for violence—even in previously healthy individuals. The treatment is removal of exposure.

Why does Trump himself seem to gravitate toward violence and destruction?

Destructiveness is a core characteristic of mental pathology, whether directed toward the self or others. First, I wish to clarify that those with mental illness are, as a group, no more dangerous than those without mental illness. When mental pathology is accompanied by criminal-mindedness, however, the combination can make individuals far more dangerous than either alone.

In my textbook on violence, I emphasize the symbolic nature of violence and how it is a life impulse gone awry. Briefly, if one cannot have love, one resorts to respect. And when respect is unavailable, one resorts to fear. Trump is now living through an intolerable loss of respect: rejection by a nation in his election defeat. Violence helps compensate for feelings of powerlessness, inadequacy and lack of real productivity.

Do you think Trump is truly exhibiting delusional or psychotic behavior? Or is he simply behaving like an autocrat making a bald-faced attempt to hold onto his power?

I believe it is both. He is certainly of an autocratic disposition because his extreme narcissism does not allow for equality with other human beings, as democracy requires. Psychiatrists generally assess delusions through personal examination, but there is other evidence of their likelihood. First, delusions are more infectious than strategic lies, and so we see, from their sheer spread, that Trump likely truly believes them. Second, his emotional fragility, manifested in extreme intolerance of realities that do not fit his wishful view of the world, predispose him to psychotic spirals. Third, his public record includes numerous hours of interviews and interactions with other people—such as the hour-long one with the Georgia secretary of state—that very nearly confirm delusion, as my colleague and I discovered in a systematic analysis.

The representatives and senators who continued to object to the EC votes following the attempt by trump and his cultists to intimidate the congress to install trump in the office for a second term, against the will of the people, need to go as well. Frankly, not one single person should have been suprized by trump's inspired insurrection yesterday at the United States Capitol. What was witnessed yesterday is EXACTLY who trump has ALWAYS been.

Yesterday trump laid out the final chapter in his efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election. In so doing he solidified his legacy. trump will leave office as an impeached president and one who actively, over time, sowed the seeds of discontent, division, and then encourged his followers to engage in sedition and insurrection. Yesterday's events at the Capitol is who donald j. trump is. A "man", so narcissistic and self serving  that he is willing to attempt destruction of our democracy and the republic. 

His sedition and treason will live in infamy forever.

What began as a rally intended to support Trump became a permanent and irreversible stain on his presidency Wednesday afternoon, as fans of the outgoing president stormed the U.S. Capitol — shattering windows, prompting evacuations and injuring law enforcement officials in the process — to temporarily halt the certification of his opponent’s 2020 victory.

A distressing scene for many Americans watching from home, the uprising at the Capitol followed two months of provocation from Trump — subversive rhetoric about America’s election, threats against GOP figures who didn’t agree, broadsides against his own vice president. And it followed four years of rabble-rousing by a president intent on keeping a grip on the GOP, resulting in a climactic moment on Wednesday that could come to define Trump’s political future and the direction of the Republican party after he leaves office.

"He screwed his supporters, he screwed the country and now he’s screwed himself,” said a 2016 Trump campaign official, predicting his former boss would cease to remain a popular figure in GOP politics after Wednesday.

Donald Trump caused this insurrection with lies and conspiracy theories about the election being rigged against him,” said Scott Jennings, a former aide to President George W. Bush who is close to the Trump White House. “The election was not stolen but this madness was fomented by the president and his top advisers.”

For the first time in four years, Trump loyalty seemed to crack. Resignations started at the White House, while even some Republicans called on Trump to resign and other loyalists implored the president to stand down.

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s chief of staff and one of the longest serving Trump aides, said she would leave over the incident, while the top two national security aides and the deputy chief of staff all considered whether to quit, according to an administration official. Another senior White House official claimed they would have stepped down if they hadn't already departed. Sen. Tom Cotton, a 2024 Republican hopeful and prominent Trump ally, said it was "past time" for the president to accept defeat.

"Every day, every person chooses to be either part of the problem or part of the solution,” said former White House assistant press secretary Austin Cantrell. “President Donald Trump and other Republican leaders should immediately denounce today’s illegal action as an affront to the American experiment of self-government and take into account the power their words have to heal or harm our Republic.”

It took approximately two-and-a-half hours from the time protesters first stormed the Capitol complex for Trump to release a video message — hastily taped outside the Oval Office — encouraging his supporters to “go home in peace.” But even then, he continued to feed the false and conspiratorial claims motivating those who had trekked to Washington in the first place.

“Trump’s video was an absolute failure of leadership," Jennings said. "It was half-hearted [and] completely inadequate.”

The former senior administration official, who was in close contact with advisers around the president on Wednesday, said it was unlikely Trump would be coaxed into saying anything beyond the video message and a few tweets.

“I don’t know who is getting through to him right now,” this person said.

Even after the video message, Trump seemed unrepentant: “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away,” he tweeted shortly before Twitter locked his account for 12 hours.

“I don’t want to talk to him, said one Republican close to Trump, echoing a senior administration official who described the effort as futile. “What am I going to say? This is one of those moments when I don’t know if I want to be involved.”
