Here you have it folks, the real truth. The socialist/statist left, the champions of the working man, blocking the extension of unemployment benefits to none other than... the working man and women.
The Senate failed Thursday to extend benefits programs for laid off workers. The house on the other hand passed a bill that would have extended for one month the program so lawmakers could decide how to address the issue in the long term.
The Senate, while trying to follow suit was not successful in overcoming the strong objections of Senator Jim Bunning, Republican Senator from Kentucky. Senator Bunning would not support the bill on grounds that the additional ten billion outlay would increase the Federal budget deficit.
Senator Bunning's position is this; rather than adding an additional ten billion to the deficit we use money from the yet unused portion of the massive "economic recovery package" enacted last year. However, and as expected, the Democrats refused consideration of this commonsense and fiscally sound approach to controlling the deficit.
It seems as our nations productive work force continues to struggle to survive... the very "party of the working man/women" is against rational initiatives that help reign in our greatest excesses that will ultimately lead to our economic collapse.
If the party of the working class was truly in favor of helping the working man and women, and in reducing the federal deficit and debt, it would support the initiatives of lawmakers such as Senator Bunning. This is likely not to transpire and the age old class warfare will likely continue.
If the left fails to recognize the validity of Senator Bunning's rational perspective approximately 1.1 million hard working Americans, searching for jobs that may or may not materialize, will be in a position of no longer being able to pay their mortgage, or buy the basic necessities of life without possibly exhausting their life savings.
This is the crime socialism has successfully perpetrated on our once free and productive capitalist society.

Pelosi's Most Ethical Congress Ever
I am reminded of Pinocchio as I read Ms. Speaker's statement on how she is running the most ethical and honest Congress in history. Three observations; 1) She is delusional with her view of her stewardship, 2) She is as narcissistic as her Leader in Chief, and 3) she is clueless when it comes to ethical behavior, or should I say the lack of it.
Ms. Ethics of the House, Her Speakership Pelosi has, at least for now determined she will not ask for Mr. Rangel's resignation from the chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee (of course this is to give time to find a way to plausibly do nothing).
The Democratic power base will take whatever action it can to protect one of their own. Pelosi is merely using delay and stalling tactics in hopes this will either blow over, or they can find a way to justify his lack of ethical behavior or else assign responsibility to someone other than "good ole Charlie."
Frankly the whole thing stinks and so once again the lack of credibility is obvious, at least to this individual anyway. Before going further, and in fairness, the other side of the politically corrupt aisle is not much better.
What any ethical leader would do given the admonishment of Rangel by the Ethics Committee is to immediately and unequivocally ask for his immediate resignation of his chairmanship. And if not given, fire him.
And the President ought to be sending a clear and strong message to Speaker, and all in Congress that clear unethical behavior is not to be tolerated.
My guess at this point? This will be just another charade in the never ending spiral of our leaders into the character abyss.

Charles Rangel, Under Ethical Fire Again
Well well, we see that the esteemed (choke) democratic congressman from the state of New York, Charles Rangel finds himself in hot water once again. According to the House Ethics Committee he accepted leisure trips to desirable locales (the Caribbean) paid for by... none other than corporations. No doubt wishing to secure Mr. Rangel's political favor and influence.
Congressman Rangel is the object of several ethic investigations as noted in the Wall Street Journal, brief excerpt below.
The ethics investigation is one of several targeting the activities of Mr. Rangel. The committee is also looking at whether Mr. Rangel filed inaccurate forms with Congress disclosing his personal assets. Last summer, Mr. Rangel updated his personal-financial-disclosure forms for the past few years, revealing more than $500,000 in assets he hadn't before made public.
The new committee action is sure to increase pressure on Mr. Rangel to give up his chairmanship. Republicans have staged several House votes calling on Mr. Rangel to step aside. Each has failed on fairly party-line votes.
Of course Mr. Rangel claims a lack of knowledge with respect to his recent pleasure trips being paid for by special interests. And make no mistake it was special interest. His argument of lack of knowledge flies in the face of logic. But even given him the benefit of the doubt, which is being kind, his staffers, those who provide support, those who report to him, should have kept him appraised of the circumstances. The fact they did not (if this is true) is still HIS RESPONSIBILITY.
During my career in business as a manager it was always understood that I held responsibility for the activities and acts of those who reported to me. Such is the realities when a person holds a position of responsibility whether it be in the private sector or the government.
Congressman Rangel should at the very least reimburse the expenses for the pleasure trips and stripped of his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means committee. What say you?

Health Care Summit Favored Republicans
After Thursday health care summit two two things are clearer than they were prior to the summit. And both tend to favor the republicans.
First, it was clear republican had either been essentially been shut out, or ignored by democrats over the past year. The republicans were able to debunk the allegations that they are just saying no for the sake of saying no as they put forth reasonable alternatives to the democratic health care plan.
Second, the power drunk statist democratic President and democratic congressional leadership will force health care through congress using the "nuclear option", or the process known as reconciliation, to push a bill through with a simple majority senate.
Here is what the President had to say in his closing remarks;
"I’d like Republicans to do a little soul searching to find out if there are some things that you’d be willling to embrace that get to this core problem of 30 million people without health insurance, and dealing seriously with the pre-existing conditions issue.
I don’t know frankly whether we can close that gap.And if we can’t close that gap, then I suspect Mitch McConnell, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner are going to have a lot of arguments about procedures in Congress about moving forward."
The Presidents comments, while perhaps requiring one to read between the lines, clearly indicate his parties intent to use reconciliation if the republican's don't bow to their desires and jump on board. This is a calculated political risk for the President and the democratic congressional leadership.
Aside from the majority of the public not being behind the democratic bill, it is also clear that the American public does not want the act of reconciliation, or nuclear option used. This for two reasons, 1) reconciliation is intended to iron out small differences house and senate budget bills, and 2) the people want to see bipartisanship as they believe if a bill has support from both parties then it will be a by far better bill than when only one party (ideology) supports it.
If the President and his statist allies are able to garner the 218 votes in the house, and 51 votes in the senate (to use the nuclear option), and push their ill crafted break the bank health care bill through, there will likely be a voter backlash come November 2010. And one that could very well carry over into 2012. The Presidents words about being a successful one term President may turn out to be prophetic.
Gergen sums it up well in the following CNN clip.

Obama Holds Health Care Summit
As President Obama convenes his Health Care Summit today I wonder if there will be mention by anyone of the current situation that has developed in England. Apparently the NHS is under investigation for failing to provide poper care to patients. As a result of this 1200 people are no longer among the living.
Excerpts from a British news outlet;
Excerpts from a British news outlet;
- Up to 1,200 patients died unnecessarily because of appalling care
- Labour's obsession with targets and box ticking blamed for scandal
- Patients were 'routinely neglected' at hospital
- Report calls for FOURTH investigation into scandal
Not a single official has been disciplined over the worst-ever NHS hospital scandal, it emerged last night.
Up to 1,200 people lost their lives needlessly because Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust put government targets and cost-cutting ahead of patient care. But none of the doctors, nurses and managers who failed them has suffered any formal sanction.
Remember, Britain's health care system is a socialistic system, controlled by the socialist government of that nation. Are the people of the United States destined to be herded don the same road by Obama and the rest of the... well I won't use any descriptive modifiers. I leave it to each to decide that for themselves.

Ron Paul - A Philosophy Of Governance For Our Time
Ron Paul, the libertarian leaning republican representative from Texas, and a candidate for his parties 2008 presidential nomination proving again he is one of the few republicans with ideas worth serious consideration. His brand of fiscal conservatism and non interventionist foreign policy is the right prescription for our nation at precisely the right time.
He touches on some issues that should be important to Americans of all political persuasions in the following short interview with Judge Napolitano.
Representative Paul, appearing at CPAC's 2010 conference had much more to say on the values of limited government, liberty, non interventionist foreign policy, and fiscal responsibility. His libertarian principals continue to gain ground nationwide. With Paul as spokesman for these principals it is certain the movement will continue to grow. While it unlikely he will mount another campaign in 2012 for his parties nomination, he should, and no doubt will, remain a strong and a viable leader in the conservative and libertarian movements.
And now the three part CPAC speech by Mr.Paul.

John McCain - Part Of The GOP's Problem
The GOP has been suffering from that slow and debilitating political disease called progressivism. And the premier standard bearer of the current Republican progressive movement is... none other than the 2008 Republican candidate Senator John McCain.
I have the highest respect and regard for the Senator's service to this country during the Vietnam war. His courage and ethics during this period of his life deserve the utmost admiration. And I want to make that point perfectly clear.
However, somewhere along the way following his initial election to the Senate, and earning the nickname "the Maverick of the Senate" John McCain went soft, and he went left.
As Michelle Malkin points out in her article entitled... "Attention GOP: John McCain is the problem"... Senator McCain is no conservative. He has a record during the Bush Administration of being a bona fide progressive.
Following are examples of McCain's progressivism:
The seven hundred billion bailout Tarp bailout.
The twenty five billion dollar auto bailout.
The three hundred billion mortgage bailout.
The initial eighty five billion AIG bailout.
In a nutshell John McCain has become part and parcel of the entrenched Republican old guard power structure that progressive like Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, and Henry Cabot Lodge would be very proud of I am sure.
If the Republican party is to rebuild itself it better shed McCain and his cronies and begin listening to the likes of Ron Paul, who has integrity and actually has ideas worth listening to.

Levin on Beck
I have read Beck and I have read Levin. In the solitude of the study they both make compelling points for the conservative cause. I have listened to Beck and I have listened to Levin. Early on they both caught my attention, and they both were as compelling in audio as in print.
But something happened. Beck, perhaps due to his shooting star, or perhaps because of his belief in his own star personality became the showman. Now don't get me wrong, I have nothing against showmanship. It can be very effective in the proper setting, and in the proper venue.
However, when presenting the case for a political cause, movement, or philosophy , it seams a lot more effective, at least to this interested party to show and maintain sincerity. It simply lends more credibility to the argument. Playing the part of the showman (or clown) just... well, I suppose give the feeling of being at a show... or circus.
View here Mark Levin's audio on Beck's antics of late.
On this I must agree with Levin. What do you think?

Huckabee Trashes CPAC
On a personal note Rational Nation USA must go on record and state I like Mike Huckabee. He is the kind of gentleman I could have an enjoyable dinner and a few drinks with. He is personable, and judging by his Sunday interview with First Lady Michelle Obama very magnanimous. And I might add a fair bass guitar player.
His politics are, however a slightly different matter. Huckabee was very specific in his criticism of CPAC 2010. It seems to this very interested party his problem with this years gathering is primarily the result of a positive change within the conservative/libertarian movement that threatens the established old guard within the Republican party. Following are a few excerpts taken from Politico that this writer believes clearly supports my argument:
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee blasted the Conservative Political Action Conference Saturday as outdated, nearly corrupt and unrepresentative of the conservative movement.
Huckabee, a 2008 Republican presidential contender and potential 2012 candidate who had spoken at the conference for years, said the reason he blew it off this year was that the meeting has become dominated by libertarian activists.
“CPAC has becoming increasingly more libertarian and less Republican over the last years, one of the reasons I didn’t go this year,” Huckabee said in an interview with Fox News, where he is a paid analyst and has his own show.
I could be wrong of course, however, I perceive his statements are meant to diminish the grass roots activism that has taken root in the conservative movement. By this I mean the Jeffersonian principals that guide such Libertarians as Ron Paul and other true liberty minded individuals in the Republican party.
As the Republican party stands today it is bankrupt of any true conservative ideals as represented by our Founding Fathers. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Thomas Paine to name just a few of the most recognizable.
For those conservative that take issue with the status quo of Republican ideology you know what I am saying. For those who don't... please forgive me... but you are part of the problem.
And for those on the left that may believe they have won an ideological victory based on my statements today please do not delude yourselves. There is much I find wrong with your ideology and will so comment at a later time.
My primary concern at present is the desire to be a part of the movement to adjust conservative thinking to a thoughtful, and philosophical level. It is my belief that a true independent conservatism is the only way back to fiscal responsibility, reasonable governance with respect to social concerns, a rational understanding of national defense, and a recognition that special influence only serves to benefit the entrenched power base. Whether that base be Republican or Democratic.
We need a strong independent third party. One whose platform is based on the principals of our Constitution and the enlightened intellect of our Founding Fathers.
Please indulge and read the entire Politico article and view the Huckabee video here.

Rational Nation USA Quotes Of The Week
Rational Nation US has been running quotes of the week for going on the eight week. Generally they have been well received. They were not designed to elicit comment. Nor were they intended to generate negative or positive political references.
Quotes of the week were merely intended as a fun diversion for me, and for my readers to use as they see fit. On a personal note I have always found quotes that have real value as stimulus for individual thought, and how each might relate to the present. Quotes from wise and knowledgeable people, either living or dead, offer value to the present and future.
There is apparently at least one individual who runs a Radical Perspective blog who has taken Rational Nation USA to task if you will for running quotes of our Founding Fathers and Ayn Rand. In essence his comments are specifically meant to bring into question my intelligence, but I suspect his intent is also to marginalize our nations history to some degree.
If the use of quotes to highlight, or add emphasis to issues or concepts is so out of place (as the Radical one seems to believe) why is it these quotes have remained available for us to read yet today. Why is it that Confucius, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, FDR, ... as well as Rand and the founding fathers are quoted yet today.
I believe it is because wisdom and truth live forever. I also believe quotes from men and women with intellect and rational thought (living or dead) can be useful in focusing our own thoughts on matters of concern. There is realty little that is new, or hasn't been thought of before in the sphere of politics, government, ethics, and philosophy. The trick is to apply relevant available knowledge to changing circumstances in effective ways.
Rational Nation USA merely makes available quotes that seem reasonable and sometimes thought provoking. It is then up to the individual to use them, or not, as they see fit.
There will one day spring from the brain of science a machine or force so fearful in its potentialities, so absolutely terrifying, that even man, the fighter, who will dare torture and death in order to inflict torture and death, will be appalled, and so abandon war forever. Thomas A. Edison
A free America... means just this: individual freedom for all, rich or poor, or else this system of government we call democracy is only an expedient to enslave man to the machine and make him like it. Frank Lloyd Wright
Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal who wishes to replace them with others. Ambrose Bierce
Free speech is not to be regulated like diseased cattle and impure butter. The audience that hissed yesterday may applaud today, even for the same performance. William O. Douglas
I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue. Barry Goldwater
If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.
Noam Chomsky
Life without liberty is like a body without spirit. Kahlil Gibran

Ron Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll - Draws Boos
As an independent conservative, and one who has only followed the CPAC conference minimally, I was pleased over the announcement Ron Paul was the top vote getter in the CPAC straw poll field of eleven. However, I was puzzled by the boos erupting from the crowd.
After a few brief moments it hit me. Boos were coming from those entrenched in the Republican Party establishment. The power structure of the party that has held control of, and was responsible for many of the failings of the out of touch current Republican party hierarchy.
While it is unlikely the seventy four year old Ron Paul will be a serious contender for the 2012 Republican nomination, he represents real conservative and libertarian principals. Principals not unlike those that fueled the conservative movement during the sixties and seventies. A movement that included Bary Goldwater, William F. Buckley, and Ronald Reagan. Modern conservatives were at one time lead by principled men.
The thirty one percent Paul received (Mitt Romney received twenty two percent) should be viewed by the Republican Party as the starting point around which to rebuild the party. Ron Paul should be considered a strong and principled voice worth listening to. His principled conservative and libertarian values can, and should be a strong part of any rebirth of a viable Republican party.
Frankly this writer believes this will not happen. The entrenched power base of the party, with its considerable money, and it's pandering to special interest influence, will stand in the way of any attempt to wrest power from them and effectively reform the party. So what's and independent conservative or libertarian minded individual to do?
Now is a time in American politics, if ever there was one, to support a strong principled third party movement. In answer to the rhetorical question as to what to do, the answer is to educate ourselves on the issues, seek out independent candidates who we believe will represent our interests and support them, cast our vote not along party lines but based on whom will best serve the long term interests of our country. In short vote our conscience.
I realize I just put myself on the firing line as I came out in support of Scott Brown during the Massachusetts special election to fill the senate seat vacated by Ted Kennedy. I did so even though the libertarian Candidate more closely mirrored my independent conservative beliefs.
This decision was not an easy one. But the idea of Cloakly possibly gaining the seat was, in any conservatives mind unacceptable. In short the idea of Cloakley possibly winning because votes went to a candidate that couldn't possibly win that election was reprehensible enough I chose to be the pragmatist. So, Radical Perspective fire away. Simply put my decision in this instance was one that was in the best interests our country.
But I digress. The critical issues of returning to sound fiscal management of our country, a viable and coherent foreign policy, a reasoned response to our critical domestic issues, regaining international respect from countries the world over, and reuniting Americas under the shared banners of liberty and self determination for all... should be the desire and goal of all American patriots.
It is the belief of the publisher and editor of Rational Nation USA to do so will require the disengagement from our current two party system and its power based stranglehold influence. It is imperative to our representative republic that a third, or even fourth principled party become ascendant. We The People must begin embracing a true independent mindset whether that be liberal or conservative and act accordingly.
The survival of our nation and its founding principles require, in fact demand, nothing less. Standing on reasoned and rational principals must be the guiding force behind our differences. But perhaps more importantly they must become the guiding force behind our similarities as Americans.
Ron Paul and his brand of conservative libertarian leaning politics deserves to be seriously considered by both the left and the right and be given it's day in court. The Republican party (read entrenched power base) would do well to give Paul a front and center seat at the table when defining its political agenda and platform.

Since You Dropped In
Since you stopped in, and Saturday is Rational Nation USA post day at Conservative Firestorm, take a link on over and catch RN USA's take on Michelle Bachmann's speech at CPAC. You might be surprised at what you find.
Honestly though, keep an open mind. As conservatives we are required to do so.
To all, have a wonderful weekend.
Normal posts resume sometime Sunday. Unless I find a way to have more fun and excitement. Like that will happen!

Campaign Finance, Free Speech, and the Court Decision
At the certain risk of antagonizing the intractable and emotional left further (and oh how I love it) I have decided to revisit the recent Supreme Court decision with respect to free speech and campaign finance law.
Having covered this in an earlier post I decided to endeavor to find additional rational arguments (note I did not say emotional) that would lend further perspective and light on the subject. After visiting several sites I found perhaps one of the most compelling arguments I have yet heard in support of the Courts decision.
Here are a few short excerpts:
"The ruling threw out limits on corporate "independent expenditures" on campaign advertising — the case in point being a hatchet-job documentary on Hillary Clinton produced by a non-profit corporation called Citizens United. Government censorship of political documentaries certainly seems to violate the very sinews of the First Amendment. "Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech" isn't very ambiguous, after all."
"For most progressives, democracy is more than a mere instrument for throwing the bums out. Democracy is instead the embodiment of the liberal ideal of equal freedom. This sacred ideal is threatened, progressives argue, by concentrations of wealth that enable inequalities in political voice. If victory in the public sphere is determined by the size of one's megaphone, then wealthy interests with large megaphones will capture the system and rig it to their permanent advantage. Consequently, megaphones must be regulated to ensure an equitable democratic process."
"Given the difficulty of using a broken system to fix itself, progressives have labored for generations to establish a corrective legal framework that would put a thumb on the scales and tilt the balance of persuasive power toward plain people and away from corporations. The trouble is, the First Amendment is written in stubbornly plain language. By honoring the simple letter of that law, the Citizens United decision dealt a crushing blow to this progressive project, leaving them wailing as if all were lost."
While progressives will make their usual arguments for the"little people" (sound like the old class warfare theme employed by the left?) the reality is the unemotional Constitutional wording is pretty da*n clear. Not much left to question.
Therefore, Rational Nation USA must restate and reemphasize support for the Constitutionally correct decision by the court.

Andrew Stack, The Austin Texas Suicide Attack On The IRS Buikding
Yesterday's senseless and violent suicide plane bombing of the IRS building in Austin, Texas by a mentally unstable Individual is reprehensible and should be condemned by all rational thinking individuals.
What is unfortunate is there is a tendency by some on the left to assign a relationship between this lone and sick person to the Tea Party Movement specifically and conservatives and libertarians generally.
Rational Nation USA, an independent conservative blog condemns this cowardly act of deranged extremism. In no way does the individual responsible for this act represent my views nor the views of any rational Tea Partier, conservative, or libertarian. The attempt by the left to draw a connection is ludicrous and defines the extent some on the left will go to in an attempt to disparage those who hold differing and legitimate political views.
I direct you to the following links here, and here, and here, that address this in a proper, unemotional, and rational manner.

Is The United States Governable?
With the people of the United States held hostage to competing political ideologies, and the nation drifting from a lack of real executive leadership, it is understandable why so many believe we are becoming a nation that cannot be governed by the system left us by our nations framers.
I admit to occasionally wondering myself if this just might be true. However, on better days, when not questioning the very desire of our nations will to retain our liberties, I know it is simply a bogus thought engineered by those who would advocate for a stronger authoritarian approach to government.
The system devised so painstakingly by men by far more intelligent and enlightened than any in government today has stood the test of 233 years. Successfully.... and in the process allowed the people to create the most influential, prosperous, and powerful nation in thew world. To do required a belief in principals found in our founding documents and wise and steady leadership.
The following excerpt is taken from Charles Krauthammer's opinion column in todays Washington Post.
"Then came Ronald Reagan, and all that chatter disappeared.
The tyranny of entitlements? Reagan collaborated with Tip O'Neill, the legendary Democratic House speaker, to establish the Alan Greenspan commission that kept Social Security solvent for a quarter-century.
A corrupted system of taxation? Reagan worked with liberal Democrat Bill Bradley to craft a legislative miracle: tax reform that eliminated dozens of loopholes and slashed rates across the board -- and fueled two decades of economic growth.
Later, a highly skilled Democratic president, Bill Clinton, successfully tackled another supposedly intractable problem: the culture of intergenerational dependency. He collaborated with another House speaker, Newt Gingrich, to produce the single most successful social reform of our time, the abolition of welfare as an entitlement."
Mr Krauthammer's point is that we have suffered from a lack of real leadership for all but 16 of the last 34 yeas. A point that is as correct as it ought to be evident.
Leadership aside for a moment, it could be the agenda of the current administration has failed because the people actually understand that healthcare in it's current form, cap and trade, and an ill advised bailout and stimulus package is not good for the country.
Mr. Krauthammer says it better than I. Read the rest of his thought provoking column here.

Time For The Second American Revolution
Does this sound about right. If it doesn't then we are most assuredly in deep trouble. The cause is right. The time is now. Do We The People have the will?
It is time for action and those to timid to take it...well...think about the alernative to taking action.
And for those who may feel this is to "colonial", and I could name at least one, tough nuts. Those are my words and I stand by them.

And for those who may feel this is to "colonial", and I could name at least one, tough nuts. Those are my words and I stand by them.
Where Is America's Will? It Is Time To Find It
Until such time as the progressives in congress finally realize government can not create real jobs and lasting prosperity, that only a robust and vibrant private sector can... and until such time as the so called conservatives in congress realize that government can not deficit spend our way to prosperity (remember GWB) we will remain in seriously troubled financial waters.
It is time that rational, level headed AmericanS, start to elect rational, level headed Americans to congress and hold them accountable for results. Real results that will point the country in the direction towards fiscal sanity and responsibility once again. It is high time the days of the special interests and corrupt political machines lose their death grip on America.
Only We The People, through patriotic concern for our rational self interest and that of our Nation, can accomplish this. Now is the time. The question is, do we have the will? One thing is fairly certain, it won't be easy and everyone will feel the pain. But it will be a fraction of the pain we will experience if we do nothing.
The video to follow is but a small illustration of the points Rational Nation USA has tried to make.

An Open Letter to My Father and Mentor
The following is a repost of an open letter I wrote five months ago explaining my rationale for defining myself as a "true independent conservative." Out of this letter came my Conservative Manifesto.
While I have dropped the adjective true, as its use is subjective, the essence of my self described "independent conservatism" remains intact and defines my politics if you will, and my basic philosophy of governance.
On the heals of recent accusations made with respect to my principals and beliefs by one who objects to my individualism I felt it appropriate to run this again. I am sure the person who referred to me as a "Brown Shirt", and a "Right Wing Reactionary" among other false identifiers still won't get it. And the purpose is not to try and change the mind of this individual. It is to hopefully reinforce the principals that I believe made this nation the greatest on earth.
And now, "An Open Letter To My Father and Mentor." One whom I salute as an America's Patriot.
The question you asked, why I call myself a true independent conservative is difficult to explain and perhaps more difficult to understand. But since you asked I will give it a try:

The question you asked, why I call myself a true independent conservative is difficult to explain and perhaps more difficult to understand. But since you asked I will give it a try:
In general the Republican party is considered to represent conservatism and therefore conservatives. The present day Republican party is not the party of conservatism. The party of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan more closely represented true conservatism than todays so called conservatives.
For a term (or concept) to have real meaning it must be founded on a concrete set of principals. Now here is where it gets tricky, at least for me to explain. As conservatism is generally defined as the desire to maintain the status-quo , or perhaps even to revert to prior held principals I guess neither of us would be a conservative by that definition.
However, my conservatism (which would be considered progressive, no make that radical, 250 years ago) is founded in principals that are rational, proven, and timeless. I consider the principals of true independent modern day conservatism to be the belief in;
A) Limited government with authority granted to it as enumerated in our Constitution
B) A true free market economy, that is to say laissez-faire capitalism
C) A judiciary (Supreme Court) that interprets law from a strict constructionist view rather than legislating from the bench. That is to say make law by judicial fiat.
D) A legislative branch that recognizes their responsibility is to the people and not their own corrupt political interests
E) A government that recognizes the rights of the individual always, and by necessity exceeds the rights of any collective
F) A government that views its mandate to tax the citizenry as limited to funding the proper role of government, not every flavor of social program that happen to come along
G) A government that recognizes the value of borders, language, and culture and insures we do not lose ours through multiculturalism
H) A government that recognizes the only appropriate use of deadly force is in the defense of our borders and our people
I) A government that protects the rights of everyone to free thought and speech, not just those that agree with the government
J) A government that insures it's citizens are protected from crimes against their person or property, and when necessary administers proper and effective punishment
K) A government that invests in the actual education of it's citizens rather than the politically correct brainwashing going on in academia today
I think I have given you enough so as to understand what I view as true independent conservatism. I suspect these principals are ones you hold as foundations of your philosophy and life as well. If you do, you are in my view, a true independent conservative by modern definition.
Here's the catch Dad, what I have described here is not at all conservative. It is as radical as it was 233 years ago when our nation was founded on these radical ideas. Our nation has spent most of the last 110 years trying to get back to a system not unlike that which it rightfully rebelled against. Today we stand a very real chance of losing that which we won those many long years ago. I fear this today more than ever because I believe our President does not understand these basic truths.
So in closing; I use the terminology "true independent conservative" because most people would think me crazy if I used the correct term to describe my politics.

Real Change, Do we Have The Will?
This sign without a doubt signals the current mood of the country. The people are angry, mad as hell to be more precise.
Career politicians who have held office for many years are electing to retire. Recognizing times are a changing, and fearful of loss at the polls, they know their useful days are behind them.
What an incredibly great thing for the nation. A significant part of our national problem is the corrupt and unethical congressional politicians and leadership on both sides of the political divide. Replacing these retiring pols can only strengthen our country.
Yet the change must run deeper than just replacement of a few retiring lawmakers. The national electorate needs to retire lawmakers en mass and replace them with honest and independent thinkers. Men and women who are not owned by the political machinery and special interests. Individuals that place principal and ethics above political expediency.
And perhaps most important is that each and every one of us stop looking at our representative and senators as though they are not part of the problem. They are probably as guilty as the representatives and senators from other congressional districts and states.
Change is not easily accepted as staying in ones comfort zone and sticking with a known quantity is always easier than taking that risk. However, it is time to take the risk and put a new congress, and President on notice we do in fact mean business.
The mood of the country is right. The time for real change is now. The remaining question is, do We The People have the will to force such change?

Keith Olbermann - Race Baiter Extradinaire
As a proud independent conservative, I am always, and forever amazed, at the virulent race baiting, and throw back the a time long gone that Keith Olbermann seems to be perpetually running from. Or could it be Olbermann is just the choir boy for the irrational liberal left in America?
I don't know which it is nor do I care. Nor should anyone choosing to think independently and rationally.
Here it is folk, down and right from one independent conservative.
Regardless of ones skin color or ethnic heritage, irrespective of ones religious beliefs; in so long as they are truly peaceful and personal, and so long as the individual respects the rights of all other individuals equally we can get past the agenda of Keith Olbermann and his liberal conductors of the liberal orchestra.
Sure, this independent conservative will no doubt be called to task by some. No doubt by the very likes of Keith Olbermann and those who in fact are the racists of the present age. They demonstrate their fear that other races and nationalities may in fact be equal to their own. Thus they fear the loss of control and hence their need to feed into the bigoted belief that minorities can only be successful with the help of... none other than the majority and themselves in particular.
From this independent conservatives perspective, Olbermann's race baiting logic is guaranteed to keep race relations relegated to the 18th century. But this, in one man's humble opinion, is the he sole purpose behind Olbermann's rhetoric and that of his deluded brethren on the fringe left..
Please see Left Coast Rebel for more on this troubling subject.

Wisconsin Billboard Advocating the POTUS be Impeached

The reality is however just this. The people of the United States elected this man to the highest office in the land for four years. He has served as POTUS for just over one year and we are seeing Impeach Obama signs on a major highway in Wisconsin. Obviously somebody in Wisconsin certainly does not like this POTUS very much.
The unnamed company, presumably a small one, has paid to have the billboard displayed for six months at one thousand dollars a month. I am sure those collecting the six thousand dollars and the sign company are all to happy to collect the revenue.
I could be wrong here, but doesn't the POTUS have to actually commit an impeachable offence to be impeached? If so for what purpose other than to show dissatisfaction over the POTUS's handling of the economy, and small business issue particularly, does this serve?
I guess it whips up some conversation, a lot of people will echo the Impeach Obama slogan just because they don't like him, and then it hopefully will be forgotten. Essentially this should be a non starter. The efforts can be better spent exposing big government, it's profligate deficit spending, it's growing of social programs, it's overseas interventionism, and the influences of special interests and how this all perverts our republic.
So while I have no argument with those who wish we had a different POTUS, I just think there are better and more effective ways to insure he does not get a repeat appearance. A good place to start is by presenting daily all the legitimate mistakes the POTUS makes as well as pointing out why his ohilosophy of governing is not right for America. How the change he brought to us is not the change we meant.
However, none of that constitutes an impeachable offence. The six thousand dollars could have been spent more productively, IMO.

The Value of Real Independence
I have been trying to understand the attacks of late on my very integrity by TAO at Radical Perspective. His attack seem to be more the result of my refusal to accept his premises and our obvious ... lets just leave it at differences.
Rational Nation USA is a site that respects, and in fact encourages different viewpoint when honestly held and sincerely presented. A prime example and case in point is Truth 101. A liberal blogger that Rational Nation USA has deep differences with. Yet a blogger that engenders respect and consideration of, and for, his differing opinions. In short a blogger that has class and spree-decor.
The very foundation of our Republic is built upon the following: 1) a fundamental distrust of government, 2) the belief that individualism, not collectivism is the bedrock of a sound and productive society, 3) capitalism is the only economic force that generates wealth and lifts society to a higher standard of living, 4) that while government is necessary to the functioning of a civil society it should be limited and the people being governed must be allowed to act responsibly on their own behalf with a minimal amount of government intrusion into their lives 5) liberty is best served by the honest and necessary give and take of opposing viewpoints, 6) the people being governed have the sole right to determine the form and substance their government will take, 7) the smallest minority is that of the individual and thusly the individual must be protected at all costs against the tyranny of the majority, 8) our republic is a fragile and enlightened concept, ours to keep if we have the will.
There is so much more that could be said on this this matter. And there are many on the liberal front as well as the conservative front such as Left Coast Rebel, Another Black Conservative, Just a Conservative Girl, The Humble Libertarian , Just a Man With His Thoughts, LandShark 5150... and so many more that share these values of American Liberty and independence. It is indeed unfortunate that bloggers such as TAO at Radical Perspective choose to tear these values down rather than building them up.
I remain a proud independent conservative. One who refuses to be brow beat by the Leninist goons of a defeated philosophy of governance, or the neo cons of a prior fascistic era. Sorry TAO, you can not, and will not win at your attempt at subversion through bullying and misrepresentation of independent conservative views..
On this, the celebration of George Washington's birthday, Long Live The Republic!

Senator Bayh Calling It Quits
"After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned,"
"There is too much partisanship and not enough progress -- too much narrow ideology and not enough practical problem-solving,"
"My decision was not motivated by political concern," Bayh said. "Even in the current challenging environment, I am confident in my prospects for re-election."
The above words spoken by Indiana Senator Evan Bay as he announced his decision not to seek reelection to the Senate seat hes has held since 1998. Rational Nation USA would like to believe his words, and accept that he is not seeking reelection because he believes it is time to allow new thinkers to assume public office. As would be the spirit of our founding fathers. However, to believe so would be naive. The reality is that he is facing a credible challenge in the upcoming elections. He simply wishes not to go home in defeat but to go home of his own choosing.
The message America has been sending, both from Tea Party activists to independent conservatives is simply this, it is time We The People are heard and that we intend take our government back from the grips of the elitists and statist that have for far to long enjoyed power they did not deserve.
Rational Nation USA does not pretend to have all the answers, as do the extremists on the left and right believe. However it is apparent what we have now, and have had for some time, is not working.
What our nation needs at this time in its history is to refocus on the principals that made us the freest and most prosperous nation the world has ever known, and in response to this determine how to apply this knowledge to the 21st century.
The idea that greater socialization of our society, its government, and the business sector falls short and flies in the face of historical fact. Irrespective of the false statements made by the progressive left. Although there are arguments made by them that are credible. Most dating back to the thought held to be true during our nations beginnings.
So to sum it up. I hope the decision of incumbent candidates on both sides of the political aisle choosing not to seek reelection continues. I hope the new blood will hold true to themselves, and to true independent though rather than as dictated by the party elite and corrupt hacks.
If they do there is a good chance this nation can regain the brilliance it once had, and regain the respect of freedom loving people the world over. If the new generation of leaders continue in the mold of the old the nation's path will continue to be difficult and strewn with the refuge of a failed nation.

Presidents Day
Rational Nation USA takes the time to honor a President few would argue was one of, if not the greatest President our nation has ever had. Our first President George Washington.
Washington was so loved and admired by the people of his era he had it in his power to shape our Republic in a manner much different than he did. Washington could have ran for President and likely held the office until his death. To his everlasting credit he was a man of principal and knew that for the Republic to stand and grow as was intended by the Founding Fathers he must step aside after two terms in office and pass the reins to another.
Thank you Mr. President for your wisdom and love of liberty and your country. We owe you much still today.
It was not until the progressive Franklin Delano Roosevelt took the reins of power in the late thirties the tradition set in place by Washington was broken. FDR, who obviously was in love with the power the Presidency gave him chose to run for an unprecedented four terms in office. Had the unfortunate circumstance of his death not intervened he likely would have been our first imperial President.
Following FDR, and to the lasting gratitude of liberty loving individuals across this great land, the congress passed into law legislation that restricted the ability of future Presidents to serve as head of state for more than two terms. By codifying Washington's example our Republic was strengthened and the possibility of an imperial presidency was constitutionally eliminated.
Presidents day is a generic term to denote a day once celebrated as the birthday of our first President George Washington. I guess Congress must have felt it best to name a day not to celebrate the greatest among Presidents but rather to celebrate the office of President. Of course by doing so we then celebrate all Presidents past, present, and future without regard to the stature and moral character of the individual President. A typically socialist mindset.
But in keeping with the generic Holiday Happy Presidents Day to all Presidents, past and present. Having said this Rational Nation USA gives special recognition to the following Presidents behind George Washington. All great Presidents in their own right.
Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, Calvin Coolidge, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan... Rational Nation USA salutes you as being part of a group of Presidents deserving of special recognition.
