Atheism Possibly Predates Christ By at Least 500 Years...

Rational Nation U S A Purveyor of Truth Stephen Fry putting things in rational perspective, certainly in my opinion anyway. Be sure to read the article on atheism for an interesting historical perspective. The Telegraph - To its adherents it is the ultimate modern belief system, the antidote to centuries of ignorance and superstition, while to its detractors it is the product of latter-day decadence and materialism. But a new Cambridge University study argues that atheism is in fact one of the world’s oldest religions – long predating Christianity and Islam. Far from being the result of scientific breakthroughs or modern mass education, the belief that there were no gods was relatively common in the ancient world, research by Prof Tim Whitmarsh, a leading Cambridge classicist, concludes. But the “ancient atheism” was effectively written out of history after Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire after the reign of Constantine in the early 4th Ce...

A Women Shouldn't Be President; According to the Bible...

Rational Nation USA Purveyor of Truth From out of Texas, complete with a biblical reference. Why should this surprise anyone ? Thump, thump, thump... DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – “A female shouldn’t be President,” is a direct quote from a Dallas woman’s Facebook page. As you might imagine, the post has attracted quite a bit of attention from people across the country. CBS 11’s Steve Pickett caught up with Cheryl Rios, the CEO of Go Ape Marketing, and asked her to explain the comment. “I believe in what I said,” she told Pickett. “There’s an old biblical sound reasoning why a woman shouldn’t be President.”  (emphasis mine) Here’s the full text of her post: “If this happens – I am moving to Canada. There is NO need for her as she is not the right person to run our country – but more importantly a female shouldn’t be president. Let the haters begin . . . but with the hormones we have there is no way we should be able to start a war. Yes I run my own business and I love it a...

Dr. Ben Carson and Christian Rights...

Image
Rational Nation USA Purveyor of Truth Tidbits from potential republican 2016 presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson. “I would like to see as much emphasis on the rights of Christians and people who are members of the faith community as to some of the other groups.” “It seems to be a topic, a person’s sexual orientation, that is of a fair amount of concern to you.” “I respect the LGBT community.” “I respect the traditional marriage community.” “Because a lot of people go into prison straight and when they come out, they’re gay.” On Thursday, Carson also declined to condemn “conversion therapy," the highly controversial practice of trying to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity through therapy. “My position is that that kind of thing should be left to therapists and individuals.” Full article HERE . Rick Santorum Visits Iowa, Is He Going To Run in 2016?...

Image
Rational Nation USA Purveyor of Truth It looks as if Rick (Frothy) Santorum is seriously considering tossing his hat in the republican circus ring for the 2016 republican presidential nomination. As one would expect Mr. Santorum, in a recent appearance in Iowa , focused on his conservative religious credentials and strength to stand up in support of conservative religious values and lead the social conservative fight. Presumably this includes an anti gay and lesbian agenda, especially with respect to marriage. While Santorum was critical of theocracies he seems to miss the the point that RFRA's in states mentioned are in all reality the attempt to legislate law based on theocratic beliefs. Law that would allow for discrimination against certain communities. In other words institutionalized bigotry and discrimination. Santorum, like most religious and social conservatives simply want to impose their brand of "religious freedom" upon the rest of American society. ...

Lets Talk About Fascism...

Rational Nation USA Purveyor of Truth Fascism is typically viewed as a leftist political and economic system. This is true if leftist is to mean a strong central government with great influence on and regulation over a nation's economic maters. In other words private ownership of business exists but the government essentially establishes economic policy through over burdensome regulations. Ayn Rand and Dr. Leonard Peikoff shared a different view. Both view conservatives and republicans as drivers of our politics and government in the direction towards fascism. While conservatives and republicans typically may not push for as much regulation over the business sector they too have in the past and continue to so so today. When combined with other traits exhibited by fascism the case can be made conservatives and republicans are more likely to meet the criteria for fascism. Dr. Lawrence Britt posted the 14 Characteristics of fascism based on his study of 4 fascist regimes. B...

On Freethinkers Part #2...

Rational Nation USA Purveyor of Truth On March 15th we did a short post on freethinkers entitled FreeThinkers, Are There any Conservative FreeThinkers Today? . Today we revisit the topic in an effort to provide a bit more framework to the discussion. Rather than a quote followed by a site statement it is hoped today's entry prompts deeper thought based on introspection . Before we begin, the answer to the question "... Are there any Conservative FreeThinkers Today is, of course. However, true Freethinkers in either conservative or liberal/progressive circles is more rare than common. We start with a definition of freethinking followed by further discussion. Merriam Webster - : a person who forms his or her own opinions about important subjects (such as religion and politics) instead of accepting what other people say : one who forms opinions on the basis of reason independently of authority; especially : one who doubts or denies religious dogma Clearly, based on th...

Americans Think Relgion Losing Influence in General, Think Religion Should Have More Influence in Politics and Government...

Image
by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Purveyor of Truth Americans believe religion's influence in life is waning and that it is a bad thing. Quite possibly this is why the political sector, particularly republicans, believe religion should take a larger part in the nation's politics and governance. I can't help thinking a couple of things, 1) it's unfortunate there is no Thomas Jefferson to breathe some common sense into the religionists, and 2) how do those who think we need more religion in government square there concern with cultures they criticize for having too much religion in government. It's hard not to think those with the opinion we need more religion in government really haven't thought at all. Pew ResearchReligion & Public Life Project -Nearly three-quarters of the public (72%) now thinks religion is losing influence in American life, up 5 percentage points from 2010 to the highest level in Pew Research polling over the past decade. And...
