by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Birthplace of Independent Conservatism Liberty -vs- Tyranny Republicans in general seem to be squarely on the wrong side of history with respect to same sex unions. As a conservative with libertarian leanings I believe it time to put the issue aside and focus on pressing issues that impact the states, and our nation by far more than this one does. One problem the republican party is facing is the size of it's tent if you will. Republican leaders, whether at the state or national level who alienate rational individuals because of their insistence on preventing same sex unions do so at a potential cost. As the tent shrinks because of the leadership's narrow mindedness on this issue so too will their influence shrink. New York, having just recently passes a same sex union law with the support of four republican lawmakers has put the issue front and center once again. I am quite pleased today. I had determined some time back, when California's Prop 8 again placed the issue of same sex marriage forefront on the American stage of morality, to pen an article on the issue. The article was to be a view from an independent conservative. I decided after several hours of work to submit it to The Daily Caller. Yesterday afternoon they notified me they were publishing my op-ed article. By: Les Carpenter III Rational Nation USA California's Proposition 8 and the issue gay and lesbian  unions continue to be front page discussion. For the life of me I cannot understand why. As I said in a prior post  this nation has many pressing and serious problems our leaders ought to be addressing.  I also reference the article by Conservative Generation on the subject. Simply put the percent of gays and lesbians in society, I am guessing now, has not changed much over the years. I am also betting that the percentage is unlikely to be impacted much by acknowledging the rights of individuals of the same sex to live together if this is what makes them happy. I am also quite certain, referring to Chicken Little,  the sky WONT fall in should same sex unions be acknowledged and people who simply feel differently than the majority are allowed to live in happiness openly.
