"Buddhanature is the innate primordial freedom of the mind, which is naturally imbued with wisdom, compassion, power, and bliss."         Karl Brunnholzl Getting to Know the Four Schools of Tibetan Buddhism Lama Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism Over the hundreds of years that the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism  –  Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and Gelugs  –  have evolved out of their common roots in India, a wide array of divergent practices, beliefs, and rituals have come into being. However, there are significant underlying commonalities between the different traditions, such as the importance of overcoming attachment to the phenomena of cyclic existence, and the idea that it is necessary for trainees to develop an attitude of sincere renunciation. John Powers’ fascinating and comprehensive book,   Introduction to Buddhism , re-issued by Snow Lion in September 2007, contains a lucid explanation of those similarities. One important point of a

Answer:   “I think you all know that Yogachara is a synonym for the Mind Only school, which is called  sem tsam pa  in Tibetan. The terms Yogachara and Cittamatra are both Sanskrit words. Roughly translated, yoga refers to an inner state of concentration and is deeply connected with the mind. Chara means “conduct” or “action.” So Yogachara can be translated as “action of the mind.” The Mind Only schools sees everything in the world and beyond as none other than the emanations and activities of mind. There are two ways to understand this. First, all schools agree that one’s own perceptions, conceptions, and ideas are

"Buddhanature is the innate primordial freedom of the mind, which is naturally imbued with wisdom, compassion, power, and bliss."         Karl Brunnholzl Lion's Roar -  In Mahayana Buddhism, the bodhisattva practices the six  paramitas , or transcendent perfections. These are a path to enlightenment, the fruition of the bodhisattva way, and a means to benefit sentient beings. They are transcendent because the subject, object, and practice of the perfections are all free of self, which is known as the threefold purity. 1. Generosity ( dana ) You give without expecting anything in return, the essence of nonattachment. 2. Discipline ( sila ) You joyfully practice the dharma in everything you do. 3. Patience ( ksanti ) You are free of aggression and maintain your equilibrium in the midst of samara’s confusion. 4. Exertion ( virya ) You work hard because you delight in the path and appreciate virtue. Overcoming laziness, you never give up. 5. Meditation ( dhyana ) Body and m

Tibetan New Year...

Image
"Buddhanature is the innate primordial freedom of the mind, which is naturally imbued with wisdom, compassion, power, and bliss."         Karl Brunnholzl For Tibetan Buddhists, this week marks Losar, the new year — a time to clean house, cherish family, make offerings, contemplate the past year and welcome the new. Losar is one of the most important days in the Tibetan Lunar calendar, a day of community practice and celebration, and a chance to express appreciation for the teachers, teachings, and the basic goodness that binds all beings together. Generally falling around the second new moon after the winter solstice, the tradition originated thousands of years ago in the pre-Buddhist Bon period and is now celebrated around the world, including in many Buddhist centers in North America. 2024 is designated as the year of the Wood Dragon, traditionally associated with strength and vitality, inviting us to welcome new beginnings.  Happy Losar! Israel's Netanyahu Rejects Gaza Ceasefire Offer...

Image
"Buddhanature is the innate primordial freedom of the mind, which is naturally imbued with wisdom, compassion, power, and bliss."         Karl Brunnholzl JERUSALEM (Reuters  -  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday rejected a proposal for a Gaza war truce by Hamas, saying victory was within reach and only total defeat of the movement that rules the blockaded strip would ensure Israel's security. Netanyahu and his far right wing Zionist government are engaged in the genocide of innocent Palestinians. Their desire to defeat Hama is simply a cover for their efforts to eliminate as many Palestinians as possible. "We are on the path to total victory. Victory is within reach," he said at a televised press briefing, adding that triumph was months away. "Only total victory will allow us to restore security in Israel, both in the north and in the south." Total BS. The Zionist government of Israel has oppressed the Palestinian people for decad
