Buddhism is not a religion, it is a way of life based in experiential knowledge. No god, no heaven, it believes in science. As the Dalai Lama has said, “I wanted to understand science because it gave me a new area to explore in my personal quest to understand the nature of reality. I also wanted to learn about it because I recognized in it a compelling way to communicate insights gleaned from my own spiritual tradition.” and “With the ever growing impact of science on our lives, religion and spirituality have a greater role to play reminding us of our humanity. There is no contradiction between the two. Each gives valuable insights into the other. Both science and the teachings of the Buddha tell us of the fundamental unity of all things.
While esoteric Buddhism does have "deity practices they are used to break through duality and to realize the virtuous qualities in the chosen deity are in actually the wisdom, compassion, and empathy already present within oneself. The deities represent awakened and enlightened qualities already present in sentient beings.
And Nirvana, simply the cessation of suffering. Which is the result of attachment (clinging to things of desire) and aversion (avoiding phenomena that is displeasing).
