"He's not a follower of Ayn Rand; clearly he's been influenced by her..."
More from Yahoo Finance:
"I don't think Ryan even in his political philosophy is as radical as I am or as radical as Ayn Rand would be," says Brook in an interview with The Daily Ticker. "Maybe he is in terms of his long-term vision and is just a practical politician."
Even though Brook says Ryan's plan is "nowhere near" what the economy needs to save it from a "debt disaster" he is quick to defend it against attacks."It brings expenses back to 2008 levels," he says. He's also "shocked" that Ryan's plan has been criticized so severely.
According to Rand, government "doesn't regulate business [and] doesn't redistribute wealth" but what it does do have is "a strong police force, a strong judiciary to arbitrate disputes and a military to protect us from outside invasions," says Brook. "Other than that (government should) leave us to pursue our happiness….leave us alone."

Ryan favors massive social spending, above even the level under LBJ.
ReplyDeleteTwo points on that:
1) I've seen people claim he is a social Darwinist who would take us back to the 19th century. Sorry, this is completely untrue for his programs which would "roll the clock back" to a situation of much higher welfare spending than that demanded by FDR and LBJ.
2) With his advocacy for massive welfare spending, he's certainly no radical, nor Objectivist.
The cartoonish minds on the left cannot understand that there is a vast spectrum of libertarians, and that everyone who's ever read Ayn Rand is not an Objectivist and devout follower.
ReplyDeleteSome, like you Les, do become serious Objectivists, while many more simply take away the common sense lessons of her book. And they are common sense because she understands that each human being is hardwired to act in his or her own rational self interest.
The mischief enters in when government twists the rules, distorts the market and creates perverse incentives.
Ayn Rand also makes sense because she echoes the Founding Fathers, perhaps not intentionally, but because she draws upon the same intellectual wellspring.
All of this is beyond the comprehension of the leftwing wackadoos
Rand, in her non fiction writing does indeed reflect on the founding fathers and their intellectual capacity and clarity. He primarily only differed in what to me are very minor ways.
DeleteRyan has voted for bills that added 5 trillion to the debt. I would not call that a fiscal hawk, or even a fiscal moderate. He belongs to an LBJ crowd of huge government spenders.
ReplyDeleteThe killing fields and ossuaries and graveyards and unknown mass graves of the world are haunted by the ghosts of more than hundred million slaughtered due to following the very bad ideas of Karl Marx, the bad ideas of the hard Left. The kind of thing that Silvers "left-wing wackadoos" think is a good idea, and if it fails and kills many millions of people each time, it only means we need to try it again, with only minor changes. To the hard left, the only thing to do about a policy that produces genocide each time is to downplay the killing, and try again. And again.
ReplyDeleteThis is not the case with the followers of Ayn Rand... relative to any "ism" in history, it is rather harmless.
The only point I would make is that Karl Marx was first and foremost an economist, somewhat in the vein of Adam Smith. He likely would have smiled upon Henry Ford, a great American capitalist. Marx viewed capitalism as far superior to the feudalism existent in Europe and the most productive efficient system up to his time. However he viewed capitalism as a transitional stage to a more equitable system whereby efficiencies created in production would lead to a higher social order wherein all would be equal beneficiaries of the improved economic system.
DeleteMarx was however not the demonic totalitarian lunatic many attempt to make him out to be. Marx was no fan or supporter of government tyranny or oppression of the populace by any means. Those that took Marx's works and perverted them, Stalin, Lenin, Trotsky, Mao, and all the rest of the Red Totalitarians of which you speak used Marx's concept of communism to control the massed and enrich their own power over of them. Marx, were alive to witness all this the would likely have spent much of his life in the Gulag. Or not survived because he would have spoke out against such brutal tyranny.
Marx's idealistic economic political system likely would not work in its pure form any more than it worked in its perverted Bolshevik form. However Marx himself was not a totalitarian and his writings do not logically lead to a society based on tyranny. However statists of the left have used, and are still using Marx's theories to control and shackle their populations.
Ayn Rand is part of the antidote to the extreme left and anyone who attempts to control the lives and well being of another.
Marx had nothing to do with "killing fields."
ReplyDeleteThat happens when sick people distort ideology.
Then other sick people blame the actions of sick people on an original ideology.
It's called a lie.
Indeed it seems distortions and distractions continue to be the tone of the times.
DeleteThere is huge problem with Marx's ideology which is at the root of the atrocities. His insistence on "class warfare" and fomenting jealousy against those who earn more. Bogus theories of expolitation. Dangerous "blame the other", as found here:
ReplyDelete"The God of the Jews has become secularized and is now a worldly God. The bill of exchange is the Jew's real God. His God is the illusory bill of exchange." ("A World Without Jews," p. 41)"
His obsession with the personal affairs of others, and his wanting to see government step in and control people more is rather hideous. And one cannot forget that he was a socialist (an advocate of an oppressive and powerful state.
The Wikipedia page notes:
"Revolutionary socialist governments espousing Marxist concepts took power in a variety of countries in the 20th century, leading to the formation of such socialist states as the Soviet Union in 1922 and the People's Republic of China in 1949"
These revolutionaries believed/believe that they were properly intepreting Marx, as have those in Castro's Cuba and Pol Pot's Cambodia. As such they are far and away the dominant and prevalent interpreters of Marx. Those who try to find something more innocent in his proclamations and predictions are a minority.
Far from being against totalitarianism, there were some totalitarian communes that existed during Marx's lifetime. And he approved of them.
"Marx, were alive to witness all this the would likely have spent much of his life in the Gulag."
Socialists are well known for killing other socialists who don't perfectly match their ideology.
But anyway, surely if he were alive to witness this, he had to have realized that this was just a natural outgrowth of his ideas. That his prescriptions needed a massive oppressive government to implement should have been obvious even to him when he was alive.
Capitalism turned corporatism as well as the oligarchs needed a boogeyman. Marx was their boogeyman. They are still playing it today.
DeleteStatism and totalitarianism is what we need to fight directly. And make no mistake, the far right (neo-cons and socons) are just as likely to push statism and even totalitarianism as is the left in my judgement.
Classical Liberalism IMO is the only political, economic, and social system that effectively insures a liberty based economic, social, and political system,. And liberty minded individuals ought to be selling the value of this system on rational argument and it's merits.
Boogeymen just don't work long term as I'm sure you know.
Marx as a bogeyman wasn't created by any corporatists. Lenin overthrowing a democracy in his name does the trick. As do the actions of Pol Pot. Mao killing tens of millions. In fact, most (but not all) of the worst despots of the 20th centuries committing unprecedented atrocities all to carry out his ideas.
