Should Micheal Steele Resign?

Michael Steele has done it again. He has managed to turn what would be a valid observation had he chose the correct words into a gaffe of significant proportion. He is wrong in saying Afghanistan is a war of Obama's choosing. George W. Bush involved us in Afghanistan as a result of 911. We have never left.

What is true is that Obama has continued to execute a war that his Generals indicated would require increasing troop levels to win. Therefore had Steele made the statement that Obama has chosen to continue in a war that is likely unwindable his credibility may not have been questioned.

Steele's comment on video:

Riehl World View has a spot on commentary backed up by solid data indicating that Obama has continued the GWB trajectory albeit at a sharply accelerated pace.

Steele is correct that history has shown a ground war in Afghanistan is an un-winnable proposition. The old Soviet Union attempted it and they ended up leaving with their tail between their legs.

The terrain in Afghanistan if amongst most rugged in the world and the Afghan people amongst the fiercest and most independent of people.

So upon closer analysis of Steele's statement the out cry for his resignation as Chairman of The Republican National Committee is premature and based on emotional reaction rather than sound analysis.

While Steele may have worded his comments poorly  he was illustrating solid conservative credentials. The war in Afghanistan is un-winnable on the ground, the escalation under Obama at the advice of his generals was unwise, and a time frame for withdrawal is an appropriate course of action .

The biggest problem with Steele's comments are that he made what should be a valid point of discourse a purely partisan political issue.
