Rational Nation USA
America is a diverse place. One with many racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We are a nation of Blacks, Caucasians, English, Italian, German, Swedish, Russian, French,
Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Hispanic... the list is almost endless. Please forgive me if I have left out your particular cultural or ethnic heritage. It is not by design but rather the list is so long as to not allow for mention of all nationalities and races. Those who chose to come to America from places around the globe did so primarily for two reasons; To gain greater freedom and an opportunity for a better life. For the most part they did so legally, at least until the the mid 1900's, and chose to assimilate into the distinctly divergent patchwork that made up American society.
I would be disingenuous in not recognizing two exceptions to the above statements. First the American Indians who were the original Americans by virtue of inhabiting this land long before the Europeans arrived. The second of course is the Black race which was brought to this land without their free choice and in bondage.
The treatment of the American Indians by placing them on reservations overseen by the The United States Government, and the bondage of the African blacks was morally wrong by any standard of ethical behavior. It is now 2010 and time to put these past realities behind us.
Barrack Hussein Obama, during his campaign, stated he wanted to create a more inclusive America, put past grievances behind us, and become a unified American culture. My words in paraphrasing Obama's message. Given the current state of race relations one must ask the question what went wrong.
It is increasingly obvious that rather than a less tense racial environment we are rapidly beginning to experience the exact opposite. President Obama, rather than having a moderating and calming effect on race relations has seemingly had a polarizing one.
As I read the NAACP call denouncing the Tea Party Movement as racist, and am reminded of the hateful and vengeful NBPP calling for violence against "white crackers" I realize we continue to live in a reality where racism does indeed exist. So I ask myself... does two wrongs make right? Of course the obvious answer is no.
Racism is not confined to white racism against blacks. Or black racism against whites. Or white racism against hispanics. Or hispanic racism against whites. The list could and does go on. Racism is universal and is a phenomenon that occurs in all races and cultures. It is just the way it is folks, always has been and likely always will be.
The only obvious answer in todays "enlightened" world is to recognize this reality, accept that there will always be bigots and racists, that legislation can not legislate morality, and that people of good will exist in all races, cultures, and societies. What is, without a doubt most important is this, the majority of Americans, black, white, hispanic, and all the rest are decidedly not racist.
So what is the root of the America's current racial problems. The answer, IMO, is twofold. First the politicians who see race or ethnic groups as voting blocks and pander to their special interests often fostering racial tensions. Secondly is the government media complex that is biased in favor of pandering to the block the progressive collectivist politicians seem to favor
The playing field, if you will, is thus tilted towards the polarization of one racial and or ethnic group against another. Rather than encouraging unity of purpose the system has been designed to work as a polarizing force... Dividing Americans along racial and ethnic lines for the purpose of maintaining power and control.
The value of a person lies not in their skin color or their ethnicity, but rather in their integrity as an individual and their productive achievement. The race or ethnicity of an individual should be of no consequence. Only their ability should determine their opportunity, and only their results should determine their rewards. Racism is at it base the worst form of collectivism. More on this will be found in the links below.
Until such time as politicians, the government, and the government media complex stops treating minorities as special interests deserving of special consideration based on the color of their skin or ethnicity the problem of racism in America will only worsen. A nation is not united by fixating on differences of race, ethnicity, or culture. It is rather increasingly more divided. The only way to create unity is to focus on and build on the human commonality we all share as Americans.

How can we possibly become color-blind when one of the first questions on every government form is "Race?"
ReplyDeleteYears ago, while filling out a government-mandated form at Marshal University in Huntington, West Virginia, my sister had to mark "other", since there was no other category for whites to mark.
Gorges - Sad... but true.
