In the News This Morning...
BEIJING (AP) — China announced a $3 billion list of U.S. goods including pork, apples and steel pipe on Friday that it said may be hit with higher tariffs in a spiraling trade dispute with President Donald Trump that companies and investors worry could depress global commerce.
President Donald Trump threatened on Friday to veto the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill already passed by Congress, only hours before government funding would lapse.
The about-face comes a day after the White House had said Trump would sign the legislation despite his misgivings. The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. Saturday if Trump does not sign a funding bill into law.
George Mason University will use a $5 million gift to its economics department to create three faculty positions, the school announced Thursday.
The gift comes from the Charles Koch Foundation, which has given millions of dollars to colleges and universities across the country. The Koch family is known for its support of conservative political groups, and at George Mason, concerns have been raised by some students and faculty about the foundation and whether its generosity influences academic freedom.
President Donald Trump’s top White House lawyer, Don McGahn, is expected to step down later this year, though his resignation is contingent on the president finding a replacement and several other factors, according to four sources familiar with McGahn’s thinking.
President Donald Trump finally jettisoned National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster on Thursday afternoon. His replacement is John Bolton, the former ambassador to the United Nations in the Bush administration — and one of the most radically hawkish voices in American foreign policy.
Bolton has said the United States should declare war on both North Korea and Iran. He was credibly accused of manipulating US intelligence on weapons of mass destruction prior to the Iraq war and of abusive treatment of his subordinates. He once “joked” about knocking 10 stories off the UN building in New York. That means his new appointment to be the most important national security official in the White House has significant — and frightening — implications for Trump’s approach to the world.
tormy Daniels's attorney hinted on Thursday that he may have hard evidence that the adult-film actress had an affair with President Trump, posting a photo on Twitter of what appeared to be a compact disc in a safe.
"If 'a picture is worth a thousand words,' how many words is this worth?????" Michael Avenatti tweeted.

Thought for the day:
No experiment can be more interesting than that we are now trying, and which we trust will end in establishing the fact, that man may be governed by reason and truth. Our first object should therefore be, to leave open to him all the avenues to truth. The most effectual hitherto found, is the freedom of the press. It is, therefore, the first shut up by those who fear the investigation of their actions.
Thomas Jefferson 1743-1826

DeleteIf this were a movie script, no Hollywood producer would want to finance it because it would be too improbable for the American audiences to believe --to believe that such chaos, skull-duggery, corrupt goings on could happen in America. But here it is right in front of our noses. Trump's base continues to support him and his outrageous tweets and behavior. Can the Republic withstand the devil, Trump? At this point, I'm thinking it won't.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom-feeders are happy Bolton is the new NSA. They'll be happy to send other people's children into another unwinnable war. I have a grandson and nephew currently serving their country and there are millions more like me. We will not stand by and let the Maniac-in-Chief drag us into bloody war.
I don't always agree with Andrew Sullivan, but this is worth reading.

DeleteThe last sentence in Sullivan's essay should open everyone's eyes:
ReplyDeleteI worry that the more Trump is opposed and even cornered — especially if he loses the House this fall — the more dangerous he will become. If Mueller really does have the goods, and if the Democrats storm back into congressional power, then Trump may well lash out to protect himself at all costs. We know he has no concern for the collateral damage his self-advancement has long caused in his private and public life. We know he has contempt for and boundless ignorance of liberal democracy. We know he is capable of anything — of immense cruelty and callousness, of petty revenge and reckless rhetoric, of sudden impulses and a quick temper. We also know he is commander-in-chief, who may soon need the greatest distraction of all.
War is coming. And there will be nothing and no one to stop him.

ReplyDeleteMy time has grown more limited so posting will reflect less of my comments and mote news with a persective and or opinion I find rational.
Rational, and what the GOP has evolved into definitely do not belong in the same room.

As The REAL Americans witness the vacuity, childness, absurdity, immaturity, idiocy, and ignornance of the rabid rightwing reactionaries.
ReplyDeleteLes... uneducated, immature people who are unable to carry on an adult level conversation resorting to childish taunts, rants and name calling.
ReplyDeleteSuch an enlightened group you've got visiting today.

DeleteHey TOM, I think I hear WYD and the Stinke's blog calling you. Time to get your next orders?
The "enlightened" group is representative of the most extreme element of today's conservatism. As well as the tRumpian GOP'ers.
ReplyDeleteA very irrational group methinks.

ReplyDeleteTom, I don't comment where the blog owner has asked me not to, even if I think their reasons are lame. But hey, it's their blog.
ReplyDeleteWhy are you seemingly unable, or perhaps unwilling, to respect the wishes of people who have no desire to have you commenting on their blogs. Or in other places about them?

Not my words Tom...
Heads-up, Les. "The Marharishi" and "Who Wants To Know" are one and the same. The troll just changes its name. Obviously escapees from The WYD asylum. It must be "Free The Trump Loonies Day" at the Stench Trench.
ReplyDeleteDid you ever notice that the more horrid news there is about #45, the more restless the inmates become?
It's ALWAYS that day at WYD Shaw.
