      Will: Athiests with a lot of certitude do cross the line into religious faith. The ones who avoid matters of religious faith most consistently are the agnostics.

    Is it really so easy to split Rand's views like that? To be with her when she opposes religion and theocratic tyranny, but oppose her when for the same reasons she also rails against the illogic and tyranny of those who believe in the divine supremacy of political rulers?

      It's called selective reasoning. Philosophically inconsistent, but Jersey isn't alone in this. I'm reasonably certain everyone at one time or another on one point or another could plead guilty.

    Selective reasoning? I've always felt Rand's aesthetics is a good example.

    In painting she championed monumental, hard edge realism (I.E. Soviet realism) but she was a great champion of the Romantics in music and went to great lengths and gyrations to integrate them with her rationalism.

    Her aesthetics were so limiting (photography merely records reality? Please). Her aesthetics were so poorly constructed that it has colored my whole ttitude toward her.

      It's hardly difficult.

      She had this construction of man as a rational being.
      Art often emphasizes man's irrational component.
      She saw that and tried to construct a rational aesthetics and completely failed.

      I'd call that a selective failure in a cult full of failures.

I admit it... there are many philosophical, governmental, business, and ethical issues on which the POTUS and me would strongly disagree. I would be being less than honest if I claimed I didn't wish the POTUS were a different individual. One whose governing practices and philosophy of government more closely resembled that of Founding Fathers and responsible independent modern conservatives. The reality is however just this. The people of the United States elected this man to the highest office in the land for four years. Ron Paul - Republican Presidential Candidate I read with great interest Ron Paul's recent statements in Iowa with respect to the 911 attacks on America by Islamic extremists and their primary motivation. Nowhere in candidate Paul's statement did I see where he justified the attacks that resulted in the death of 3,000 plus Americans. What I did read was a rational analysis of what motivated the attackers and why they were so motivated. Call it thinking outside the confines of a restricted and often myopic view of reality. In other words Paul is saying first seek to understand the motivations of a dangerous extremist group and then seek to effect ways to change their reality. IE: Perception. Because perception is reality to all people who perceive. Those who perpetrated the 911 attacks on America were monsters, and they deserved to face a full and justified...
