The Death of Initiative and Productive Achievement

The sighing of  the once great economic engine is heard throughout the land. As the horses of productivity and the genius of creative capacity are ever taxed, and further burdened by the albatross that is the state, they plod on. Always confident, always struggling to support the dream. The belief that hard work, perserverance, and the right to trade freely will foster the realization of the dream. That unique and envied dream. The American Dream.

In the beginning there was promise. The promise of a republic founded on the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. With this promise came the belief that through hard work and ethical behavior the republic would be kept. And so for over a century the creative, and those willing to accept risk, the risk of losing everything, resulted in an economic expansion never witnessed before in the annals of human history.

The country became the most productive in the world, created the greatest wealth, raised the standard of living for millions of individuals, and fostered a huge migration from faraway land to its country by people seeking a better life. Those immigrants strengthened the fabric of the countries culture because they became citizens of their new country. The country became stronger as a result of their struggles and contributions.

The great success of the promise was made possible because the Government Of The People, By The People, and For The People let the people do the work. It allowed them to use their creative capacity and their ingenuity to build a better economic and social structure. The Government Of The People, By The People, and For The People trusted the people and their abilities to create a great economy and a great Nation.

Somewhere along the way the Government Of The People, By The People, and For The People got lost. It stopped believing in the ability of the people to overcome adversity. It began to believe in its own superiority. And so the Government begin to believe it knew best what was right for its citizens. It slowly took control of their businesses, their right to own the fruits of their labor, the ability to defend that which was rightfully theirs.

Over the course of a century and a quarter the Government ceased to be the a Government Of The People, By The People, and For The People. It gradually became a Government Of the Government, By The Government, and For The Government. As it grew it's tentacles reached into every facet of the citizens life and curtailed their liberties. The Government became so onerous that each year, and with each economic "crises",  it took ever more control of the engine that created the wealth of the country and its people.

In the name of a fairness it began to take the rewards of the individuals labor and creativity and redistributed it through socialized government programs. It began with the Progressive Movement, moved  to The New Deal, on to the New Frontier, and into the Great Society. All along the way extolling the virtues of bigger more socialized and statist government. It was good the government told the people, because Big Brother could take care of them better than they could take care of themselves.

There came a day when the weight of excessive spending and monetary chicanery caused great dislocation in the market and businesses across the land. The Government, quick to respond decided more control over free enterprise was needed so they began an almost trillion dollar bailout of failing businesses. At that time there was a national election and power changed hands. There was hope and change alive in the land.

It soon became apparent that the hope and change was to usher in increased government control over businesses, partial nationalization of some of the business sector, a frenzied push to radically change in health care, increased government spending, increased regulatory control, increased taxes on the most productive individuals and corporations in the land. With all of this was a projected doubling of the national debt from 11.8 trillion dollars to over 20 trillion dollars in ten years.

An so the engines of productive capacity groaned on. The creative and those of ability labored on. But one could hear the grinding of the gears, long in need of the oil only  free market capitalism provides. With the monkey wrenches of bailout, stimulus, cash for clunkers, the cost of radical heath system overhaul, two interconnected wars, greater infringement on the individuals ability to retain the rewards of their labor the future of the Republic looked bleak. Finally the realization of the cost of  a socialist/statist doctrine, that began its march over a hundred years earlier hit the people square in the eyes. They had finally reached their Obamanation.

Can the dream which is the American Republic be saved and kept for future generations? The jury is still out.
