A. (1775): A banner designed by Continental Col. Christopher Gadsden, using colonial rattlesnake imagery popularized by Benjamin Franklin, that accompanied the first-ever mission of the nascent U.S. Navy.

A. (1991): A song and album cover from Metallica.

A. (2004): A common sight at anti-Iraq War protests.

A. (2009): According to law enforcement officials, “the most common symbol displayed by militia members and organizations,” possibly indicative of “terrorist or criminal operations.”

A. (2009): According to anti-Tea Party commentators, a historical indicator of white resentment against blacks.

    If this is the chronology of the Gadsden flag, I would add early 2009, when the tea party usurped the symbology of this flag, formerly associated with Libertarians.

    Flags can be rallying symbols. Flags can be controversial. To wit:

    Just as patriotism is the last vestige of a conservative scoundrel, accusing others of racism remains the last vestige of a progressive one (ironic in that some of the most virulent racists in England and America were the early progressives; John Maynard Keynes, Woodrow Wilson, H.G. Wells, Teddy Roosevelt, Margaret Sanger, etc.).

      Jersey, my point was simply that conservative scoundrels play the patriotism card (I gather that you agree with that part of my point) and liberal scoundrels like Sharpton and Jackson play the race card. That's it; a simple down the middle assertion that most people would probably agree with.

However, on the other hand there are certainly those who have a clear vision as to what and why Wall Street needs to change. The reasonable people supporting OWS are doing so to end crony capitalism, corporatism, the unethical practices of banking executives and mortgage lenders, as well as government bailouts of businesses. They also recognize corporate lobbyist must become a extinct group. That is to say they have a purpose and an agenda which the supporters of the cause believe will make their society a better place to live. History has shown that societies with the most intrusive and leviathan governments are the least effective and restrict the liberties of individuals too the greatest degree. The classical liberals, whose philosophy of governance was anchored in the  Enlightenment  and The Age of Reason , believed in maximum liberty for the individual. They were wary of government, believing it was as much a force for evil as good. Classical Liberalism was about the individual, the rights of the individual, and the belief that the individual was not a vassal of the state, but rather should be the master of the state, limiting it's interference in the lives of the people.
