Enough To Sicken Even the Most Hardy Free Man and Free Woman...

Liberty
-vs- Tyranny

What you are about to read will sicken you. That is if you are a liberty minded individual who values freedom, private property rights, opportunity to succeed based on your individual merits, and ethical objective behavior.

If you're American and it doesn't sicken you then may I suggest a relocation to the Middle East or perhaps Venezuela?

The Telegraph Take a close look at this promotional poster. Notice anything? Alongside the symbols of Christianity, Judaism, Jainism and so on is one of the wickedest emblems humanity has conceived: the hammer and sickle.

For three generations, the badge of the Soviet revolution meant poverty, slavery, torture and death. It adorned the caps of the chekas who came in the night. It opened and closed the propaganda films which hid the famines. It advertised the people's courts where victims of purges and show-trials were condemned. It fluttered over the re-education camps and the gulags. For hundreds of millions of Europeans, it was a symbol of foreign occupation. Hungary, Lithuania and Moldova have banned its use, and various former communist countries want it to be treated in the same way as Nazi insignia.

Yet here it sits on a poster in the European Commission, advertising the moral deafness of its author (I hope that's what it is, rather than lingering nostalgia). The Bolshevist sigil celebrates the ideology which, in strict numerical terms, must be reckoned the most murderous ever devised by our species. That it can be passed unremarked day after day in the corridors of Brussels is nauseating.

Indeed, Indeed...

    1. Indeed. But the progressives, like jmj below, will never grasp why those who value such things as liberty, property rights, and limited non intrusive government find it so revolting.

  2. Take it easy, Les. There are plenty of decent, pleasant, normal communists running around out there in Europe and Asia. They are not Stalinists, Maoists or Leninists. They are basically academic Marxists, and they are harmless, have very little power around the world, and are definitely not totalitarians (at least not many of them are).

Then there are those who were personally better off under communists regimes, but they're not getting any younger and the youth have already outnumbered them in their respective countries, like Russia and the old Bloc countries.

Altogether, the vast majority of people who identify themselves as communists are not insane super-villains bent on destroying the world. Their mostly older working and middle class people from Europe and some parts of Asia who are very pro-union and other public organization.

It's a mirror political philosophy to libertarianism, when you think about it in a certain way. And certainly you are. That's why you find it so abhorrent. But remember, a lot of people think you libertarians and objectivists can seem a little scary sometimes too. Too much of anything...

Personally, I prefer our constitutional system. Be they communists or objectivists, liberals or conservatives, D's or M's or just into S&M, our constitution has to be amended by the people to accommodate them. It's a tough thing to do.

Let me put it this way - I'm personally, from my study of history, far more concerned with the far-righties than I am with the far lefties in this country. Our country.

I'm little less concerned with that image.

    1. Why does your response not surprise me at all jmj? Could it be because I know you have no problem with intrusive government? That in fact you welcome it. Maybe it is because you sneer at individual rights and the right to individual property? Could it be that in your naivete and completely trusting nature with respect to the nanny state?

Communism in its philosophical and ethical make up is EVIL, pure and simple. It denies individuality and places power totally in the collective.

Philosophy, Who Needs It? A book you ought to read sometime lml.

Perhaps not, but when their ideology has free reign in a society, destruction, misery and death are the inevitable outcomes.

Decent people can be incredibly led astray on political philosophy, religion such as cults and fundamental extremism (of which communism is; the cult and worship of the state). Just because naive, well meaning folks are deceived into a way of thinking doesn't mean that their underlying philosophy is not immoral, destructive or insane or one that imprisons and shackles their fellow man if left unchecked.

  4. I couldn't agree more with your sentiments on this one, Les, but tell me please if, as a prime exponent of unlimited freedom, which seem to be, would you support legislation to outlaw the existence of open advocacy for Marxist-Communist-Socialist objectives in our country?

I've gotten into a couple of knock-down-drag-out fights with Finntann over this, because I do believe certain limits ought to be placed on the expression and promotion of all forms of Marxian ideology, and pseudo "religions" such as Satanism.

Finn firmly believes that would put us on a that famous "slippery slope" and could not help but lead to tyranny.

I say he greatly underestimates the fundamental stupidity, gullibility and hopeless incompetenceof the masses.

The Founding Fathers with few exceptions felt the way I do and made no bones about it, which is why the franchise at first was extended only to successful, property owning males of proven capability. It is also why we have the Electoral College and why senators were originally chosen by state legislatures and not by direct popular vote.

The country did better when the original constitution was in force. The amendments ceding more and more power to "the vulgar populace," as Alexander Hamilton called the masses, have weakened and coarsened us terribly in my never humble opinion.

What do YOU think? I'm seriously interested in learning your thoughts on this delicate issue.

A unequivocal NO! On this I actually find myself in agreement with Finntann. Only if advocates of Marxism attempt, by virtue of force, to deny me, my family, or other freemen of their individual rights would I support such legislation. Something our classically Liberal founders would no doubt support as well.

"... which is why the franchise at first was extended only to successful, property owning males of proven capability. It is also why we have the Electoral College and why senators were originally chosen by state legislatures and not by direct popular vote."

The only point here that I disagree with is the position that you must be a property owner to to have the right to vote. I no longer own property, a decision my wife and I made 25 years ago, after we both had shared in the delights and responsibilities of owning property. Take my right to vote away now and I just might get terribly upsEt and maybe violent.

"The country did better when the original constitution was in force. The amendments ceding more and more power to "the vulgar populace," as Alexander Hamilton called the masses, have weakened and coarsened us terribly in my never humble opinion."

In many way the country did do better when the powers of the federal government were more delineated and limited. However, as society has grown in population, and the complexities of a increasingly industrialized and technologically advanced civilization has placed unforeseen challenges and obstacles before us we need to think outside the box. In my never humble opinion both the right and the left have their heads so far up there arse neither can see the light needed to respond to today's global challenges.

Scrapping what has worked makes no sense. Nor does refusal to consider realistic alternatives for what isn't working while preserving individual civil rights, property rights, and a proper role for government make sense either.

As to the "vulgar populace", well, my grandfather out of necessity had to quit school in ninth grade to help support his family. He was one of the smartest self educated men I ever knew, and not because he was my grandfather. He owned property, stayed married to my grandmother for over 55 years, didn't fight in WW II only because his job in the private sector was critical to the war effort; ie the government would not let him enlist. For anyone to call him "the vulgar populace" would have been fighting words to say the very least. He would have been right. He had many, many, many, aquaintances and friends just like himself who would have joined with him.

More later FT if you like. I have to go pick up my grandson with grandma right now.

Giving over the election of the U.S. Senate to popular vote was a huge mistake, I think.

The masses were still voting, of course: for the House and for their own local and state governments -- according to the voting parameters of the time. On the local and state levels, voting parameters were established by those entities.

Were some of the restrictions unreasonable? Perhaps. Certainly, forbidding voting based solely on race was reprehensible. But those who own property are more vested in knowing about the issues instead of voting by the seat of their pants or according to whoever gives the biggest handouts.

Furthermore, interest in politics -- real interest and concern -- was more intense at the state level when more was at stake, i.e., the appointment of U.S. Senators.

Today, particularly with mass media, people are too easily swayed and too subject to fallacies in logic. Just look at the political ads that we are subjected to every day! Sheesh. Here in battleground state Virginia, these ads are bombardments!

Add to the above what our public schools promote. The Left! That influence used to be moderated by other views within the public school system. No more!

My mother used to say, "If a person shows up at the polls to vote and cannot name all the candidates, that person shouldn't be allowed to vote." Draconian, I know, but Mom had a point, I think.

Elections for those at the federal level have swamped elections at other levels. In fact, often, when I go to the polls, I don't even recognize the names of candidates for other offices. And I try to stay informed about those levels! But these candidates cannot get the word out as to their positions on local and state matters, matters that often affect the citizenry more directly that matters at the federal level.

I have come to the conclusion that the Information Age is really the Age of Ignorance. The masses are caught up in trivialities, sound bytes, and logic fallacies.

Communism is "a mirror political philosophy to libertarianism?"

OK, I buy that, because libertarianism embraces freedom for all, while communism brings chains, slavery and misery.

But still, the comparison was jarring, and it is an insult to mention the two as though they were equal choices.

Libertarianism hasn't killed over 100 million people like communism has, so it's no contest, and the hammer and sickle and the star are symbols of death and misery. Anyone who embraces them is a sorry excuse for a human being.

Most of the worst mass murderers in history have been socialists. None of them have been libertarians. The reason for this difference lies in the root ideologies of these distinctly contrasting groups.

  8. Jersey is right when he said that communism (hard-line leftist fascism) is the opposite of libertarianism. A system of no liberty.

Marxism is pure evil and causes genocide and mass oppression whenever applied. A harmless Marxist is like a harmless Nazi (as per JMJ's example). Harmless only due to lacking power. But once they get it, the rivers run red with blood.

Communism is not a mirror of libertarianism. The two are polar opposites in all ways.

Silver said: "OK, I buy that, because libertarianism embraces freedom for all, while communism brings chains, slavery and misery."

Exactly. I wonder why JMJ only looks at the surface of things, and ignores history?

Jersey also said: "Altogether, the vast majority of people who identify themselves as communists are not insane super-villains bent on destroying the world."

Well, the only thing that communists aren't is 'super'. They don't use super powers to slaughter us: they use knives and bullets. Just mundane villains.
