Immigration and Assimilation

Rational Nation USA

Michelle Malkin posted an article Friday 7/02/10 on immigration. The main theme was that our founding fathers were very much in favor of legal immigration. Being a nation of immigrants from the beginning it is only natural they would take such a position.

That being a given Malkin points out the founders also realized that immigrants must accept our unique American culture and in thereby assimilate into it. To illustrate this point the following excerpt from her article:

George Washington, in a letter to John Adams, stated that immigrants should be absorbed into American life so that “by an intermixture with our people, they, or their descendants, get assimilated to our customs, measures, laws: in a word soon become one people.”

In a 1790 speech to Congress on the naturalization of immigrants, James Madison stated that America should welcome the immigrant who could assimilate, but exclude the immigrant who could not readily “incorporate himself into our society.”

Alexander Hamilton wrote in 1802: “The safety of a republic depends essentially on the energy of a common national sentiment; on a uniformity of principles and habits; on the exemption of the citizens from foreign bias and prejudice; and on that love of country which will almost invariably be found to be closely connected with birth, education and family.” Visit her full article here.

Further argument for the absolute need for immigrants to assimilate into American culture are evident in the words of America's first truly "progressive collectivist" president Theodore Roosevelt.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American who assimilates to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with  everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." More here.

After President Obama's speech on immigration reform it is clear he disagrees with the Founding Father's as well as the Father of Progressivism... President Theodore Roosevelt.

As the debate over immigration reform, Arizona's new immigration law (SB 1070) and the impending court challenge, and the proper role of the federal government in immigration control heats up it is advisable the words of our Founders and progressive President Theodore Roosevelt be remembered and considered.

First this nation needs to close off our porous borders and insure illegals are caught and dealt with appropriately. In other words denied entry. Once this has been accomplised then and only then should we consider the issue of 12 million (approximate) illegals now residing within our national borders.

  1. The thing that irritates me the most with the current illegal alien debate is that none of the people protesting it or screeching "RACIST!" have even read it. (By coincidence, I just posted my very short message to them.) There's nothing in the bill that would warrant the claim that it will result in racial profiling. At all.

I welcome with open arms anyone who wants to come here legally and support wholeheartedly the principles of liberty. I don't care what color they are, where they're from, what their religious beliefs are, what size shoes they wear, whatever. The only thing important thing is that they conform fully to the foundational principle of the inherent right of each individual to his or her life, liberty, and property.

Of course, that disqualifies a signification percentage of the people that are here right now, in particular everyone that voted for the Fop in Chief...
