Russian President Mededev Gets It... Unlike Obama

by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Birthplace of Independent Conservastism Liberty -vs- Tyranny As our own nation drifts toward greater government control and regulation over the economy and means of production Russian President Medvedev gets it. Power Line Blog Russia's President, Dmitri Medvedev, addressed the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum yesterday. He pledged a new course for Russia: Medvedev acknowledged that the government's expansion in managing the economy and the centralization of authority in the Kremlin under Putin was necessary in an earlier period of the country's post-Soviet development. But, he said, "this economic mode is dangerous for the country's future." "The proposition that the government is always right is manifested either in corruption or benefits to 'preferred' companies," he said. "My choice is different. The Russian economy ought to be dominated by private businesses an...

Our Historical I.Q.

Image
by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Birthplace of Independent Conservatism Liberty -vs- Tyranny Not to pat myself on the back but I have been saying for the last forty years to anyone who will listen that history is important. The knowledge and understanding of history is critically important if a society is to preserve its culture and heritage.. Back in the early 70's when I was in college I recall a competent history teacher telling me of the efforts {even at that time} to revise actual historical fact. He called it revisionist history and he told me there was a definite cultural and ideological force behind it. As I recall he said it was the march of the progressive movement. Whatever it may be David McCullough's article in the WSJ is spot on. 'We're raising young people who are, by and large, historically illiterate," David McCullough tells me on a recent afternoon in a quiet meeting room at the Boston Public Library. Having lectured at more ...

Issue #1. Solution - raise taxes on the wealthy. Issue #2. Solution - raise taxes on the wealthy. Issue #3. Solution - raise taxes on the wealthy. Issue #4. Solution - raise taxes on the wealthy....Are you starting to see a pattern here, people?...Seriously, though, have you noticed how certain progressives simply cannot fathom EVER being questioned? I mean, it's almost like, "How dare you!" "How dare you say that the great Franklin Delano Roosevelt wasn't the supreme President of all time." How dare you say that the lowly Harry Truman may actually have been better." "How dare you say that the Great Society may have had a double-edged sword or two." "How dare you say that unions may engage in questionable tactics occasionally." My God, it's gotten so bad that I almost want to talk to Pat Robertson, the ghost of Jerry Falwell, etc..

Just a Thinkin'

I always find it interesting that the African-American family was able to survive slavery, Jim Crow, and lynching, but it couldn't survive the 1960s. Is it possible here, folks, the we killed it, that entire institution, with kindness?

Is the Obama Presidency Worth Saving?

Image
Freaking News by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Birthplace of Independent Conservatism Liberty -vs- Tyranny After reading a long and overly analytical article on Obama's failed policies thus far it became apparent the author was trying to keep the energy of "Hope and Change" alive. The headline of the article reads, Can This Presidency Be Saved? . To which the response ought to be, Why Would Anybody Want To Save A Failure? Of course the obvious answer, at least to those who aren't hooked on hopium is, nobody would. Some excerpts from the article. President Obama still has a shot at convincing voters that the GOP would make things worse, but his administration has not just lost control over the direction of the economy. It has lost control of the discussion about the economy. Why did the stimulus fail? What did the President learn from this failure and what will the President try next? The White House has been so busy bobbing and weaving it has ...

The Progressive

by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Birthplace of Independent Conservatism Liberty -vs- Tyranny "Sounds like you have a problem with democracy." The preceding statement was of course directed at me. It was made by a progressive, one who obviously believes democracy is the ideal. The utopia. The remark was made in response to this comment by me, There you go again. I am for individualism and liberty. Remember, the constitution was framed with this in mind... ...to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority... Hence a nation of laws. What progressives advocate is increasing influence and control by the state. Connect the dots and eventually you have an obvious picture. The exchange got me thinking once again about democracy as opposed to our representative {republic} form of government. As is usually the case I referred to that book of concept definitions, the dictionary. democracy a) government by the people; esp : rule of the majority republ...

Carter on the Global Drug War... Something to Seriously Consider

Image
by: Les Carpenter Rational Nation USA Birthplace of Independent Conservatism Liberty -vs- Tyranny There is little I would agree with Jimmy Carter on. Whether it be the proper scope of American government, philosophy, international affairs, and most everything else in between. On the issue of the global drug war, {and its dismal failure} I must agree with him. We have spent billions attempting to cut off supply and in the process created the current multi-billion dollar illicit drug trade. Reminiscent of prohibition of alcohol back in the day. As long as there exists a demand there will be cartels and individuals who will provide the supply. This folks is not rocket science. From Mr. Carter's New York Times opinion page. IN an extraordinary new initiative announced earlier this month, the Global Commission on Drug Policy has made some courageous and profoundly important recommendations in a report on how to bring more effective control over the illicit drug trade. The ...
