The Weekend Shopping In the Time of Covid-19...
Covid-19, aka Corona virus, or the beer virus as I like to call it is being hyped 24/7 by the cable news outlets. While it is good, as well as absolutely necessary, to equip the public with as much information and knowledge possible so people can better protect themselves from the virus the sense of hysteria created by the networks is unnecessary and foolish.
Fear makes folks do things they otherwise wouldn't do. So, the networks constant over hyped non-stop chatter beyond just the facts and what best to do to protect yourself (mostly all common sense stuff) is nothing short of fostering fear in folks. The result, for one we find out toilet paper is more important to folks in a crises than food apparently is. Let me explain.
Yesterday was the regular shopping day for the better half and me. After breakfast we went to our usual stores for food, paper products, and items from the pharmacy. Much to our annoyance a lot of stuff was out of stock. Now food and water was not a problem. Other than water was in more limited supply and so we had to mix and match brands to get the amount we normally buy. Of course hand sanitizer was sold out, alcohol was sold out, toilet paper sold out, paper towels sold out, sanitizing wipes sold out, and, I'm sure I've missed a couple of things.
So we proceeded to three other stores that we normally don't shop at. Same story. Same items out of stock. So we called it quits and decided to try a few other places we normally don't shop at much Sunday (today). Off we went after breakfast searching for the above named items. After a an hour or so we decided to call it quits. Nothing to be had anywhere. So, what to do about toilet paper. Now our number 1 problem.
Then it struck me like a lightening bolt! Buy boxes of unscented and unprinted facial tissue and a few dozen containers of flushable baby wipes. Problem solved. Poop and wipe with three or four baby wipes and then dry wipe with facial tissues until dry. Step 3 is put the dry wipe tissues in a plastic sandwich baggie, seal, and into the garbage outdoors it goes.
Back to the 24/7 over hyped continual loop of Covid-19 hysteria. Next week is another week sure to be rife with more of the same. But for now anyway the old posterior will be kept fresh. Perhaps Trump can encourage TP makers to ramp up TP production.

Odd how a complex molecule like covid49 which quickly comes apart in bleach or soap and water, can bring the human
ReplyDeleterace to a standstill. My wife was surprised that the shelves were totally bare and miffed that lima beans were still
plentiful (and I like them). Modern definition: Drain The Swamp- slogan meaning get rid of all government experts,
experienced workers, scientists, diplomats and physicians-close down their departments..and replace them with
sycophantic big donors, relatives, evangelicals, and fox news employees, especially if they have no idea of what they are doing but worship the King wonderfully and blame some guy named Obama for everything. In some circles, Drain the Swamp is also known as Create A Toxic Landfill. This morning the market went down 12% in 10 seconds (while I was breakfasting on lima beans). We humans are adaptable, but golly gee....
I was at the store today. Amazing. Monday is bread delivery day nation wide. Not a single loaf. None. Nothing. No buns, muffins or anything. No meat, no chicken, no pork. Again... nothing. Some "fresh" fish and seafood. Of course, no paper products.
ReplyDeleteMostly it was people walking around like Christmas eve shoppers in a stupor taking whatever they could find.
My only thoughts are not that people are afraid of the stores running out, but afraid those stores will be forced to close because of a lack of workers.
My thoughts BB and Dave are that the virus Meism-1 (pronounced me-ism) has struck the nation in conjunction with Covid-19.
ReplyDeleteMeism-1 is essentially the attitude I got mine so go fend for yourselves. I'm not my brother's keeper.. This of course has always been Trump's operating philosophy and so more Americans (the trumper cultist base) now feel it perfectly acceptable to hold that attitude.
But, apparently enough sane people have been able to convince him his road to victory in November is to create a great stimulus package to compliment the lower Fed interest rate to shore up the economy at this time. I support that BTW. But I give NO credit to Trump for originality on this. Were it not for saner folks the only thing Dotard would have done is take care of business and his wealthy buddies.
Regardless, Trump HAS to go or this nation will find itself facing one crisis after another. Trump is just THAT CORRUPT.
In fairness, grocery stores, coops, drug stores etc should have implemented mnax. quantity purchases of high demand items such as those mentioned.
DeleteHindsight is 20/20 I guess.
RN... I've talked to folks in the grocery business. The crush hit before anyone knew it would. And now they're scrambling to catch up.
