Reason and Diplomacy Prevailed, Peacemakers Won and War Mongers Lost.,..

Rational Nation USA
Purveyor of Truth

America and Israel should be thankful for this day. Diplomacy has trumped the USA's and Iranian's war hawks desire for conflict and war. As people become more aware of the specifics of the deal with Iran they will understand that the Obama administration has advanced the likelihood of peace and stability in a volatile region of our world. While there remains much left to do in the region this is a first and historic step.

Peace won. War lost. It’s as simple as that. Make no mistake, the framework agreement that was announced yesterday is nothing short of historic. A cycle of escalation has been broken – for the first time, Iran’s nuclear program will roll back, as will the sanctions Iran has been subjected too.

In 2003, as I describe in Treacherous Alliance - the Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran and the US, Iran only had 164 centrifuges. It offered to negotiate with the United States, but the George Bush administration refused. “We don’t talk to evil,” Vice President Dick Cheney quipped in response to the negotiation offer. Instead, the Bush administration resorted to threats of war and sanctions.

Iran, in turn, expanded its program. By 2005, it had 3,000 centrifuges. Again, it sought negotiations and offered to stop expanding its nuclear program. Again, the United States refused.

By the time President Barack Obama came to power, the Iranians were operating around 8,000 centrifuges. After his initial, limited attempt at diplomacy failed, Obama embarked on what was called the pressure track – sanctions. As the United States ramped up unprecedented sanctions, Iran accelerated its nuclear activities. By end of 2013, Iran had 22,000 centrifuges. It had a large stockpile of both low and medium enriched uranium. It had mastered the fuel cycle. It was closer to a breakout capability than ever before.

Pressure yielded pressure. Sanctions begot centrifuges. The escalation had left the United States increasingly faced with the worst option – war.

Until diplomacy begun in earnest – much thanks to the commitment of President Obama and the election of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

It’s only now – thanks to their persistent and tireless diplomacy – that the growth of the Iranian nuclear program has not only been stopped, it has been reversed. This is the first time that the number of centrifuges Iran operates will have been reduced. No other policy has achieved this. The critics can’t touch this.

They have not only been wrong in how to handle the Iranian nuclear program – they have been wrong on almost anything about Iran.

The critics said Iran would never honor its word. They were wrong. The IAEA has consistently attested that both the United States and Iran have lived up to their commitments. President Obama himself pointed this out today – a rare praise by the U.S. president of Iran.

The critics said the Iranians would only play for time. They were wrong. Both sides negotiated with sincerity. If the Iranians just wanted to negotiate in order to shift the blame onto the Unites States and escape international pressure, they had the best chance to so when the 47 U.S. senators committed in writing that they would undo the agreement. Iran could have walked away from the table. Much of the international community would not have blamed Iran for it. But Iran didn’t do this. Instead, the Iranian negotiators sacrificed their Persian New Year’s holidays and continued negotiating.

To my American Iranian friends wherever you may be I say... It's about damn time! I thank your country's moderates for hanging in there and working with American diplomats to get it done.

  1. Some newsy wag noted that since both the US right and the Iranian right are fuming over the agreement, it must be a pretty good one.

  2. Probably a good observation. Certainly the MIC can't be overjoyed with the prospects of finding ways to secure peace rather tan war. Although Given the USA's large arsenal of nukes and Iran yet to have one I don't understand why anyone over there would see an upside to conflict. The USA could vaporize Iran in sort order should they ever use a nuke.

Its a crazy world because there are so many crazy people worldwide.

  4. Is this a deal at any cost, what did we get and what did they get. The current administration was so eager for a deal because he is trying to find a legacy and this may be it. This looks like you need to pass it to see what is in it and we know what a disaster that was. With the most transparent administration in history I am sure will have all the detains soon.

To all my Jewish friends wherever you are, see ya!

    1. Skud, you did know that most US Jews are very liberal, right?

    2. skudrunner ole buddy, and your point is? Has the Kool-Aid of the neo con saber rattling conflict seeking right water logged your grey matter?

I mean give us some credible and substantial evidence of what you allege. Should you find any please bring it on over and post it here.

  5. I didn't allege anything but all of this praise is yet to be deserved because no one knows what it contains.
The left is seeking something to praise bho for and this is it.

Now, what does it get and what does it give away?

    BB, no doubt about it.

  6. The current administration was so eager for a deal because he is trying to find a legacy... --Allegation

The left is seeking something to praise bho for and this is it.-- Allegation

Call them unsubstantiated or unfounded statements if you prefer.

If you have substantiated credible facts supporting your statements all I said was great, post em here. Apparently you have none.

  7. Skud, you allege that praise of the agreement is not to be deserved because no one knows what it contains.

If what you say is true, and you are a honest broker, why do people like Bibi and the GOP not come in for the same contempt? Why is your snark only directed at liberals who do not know "what it contains" but not conservatives?

Wouldn't a more reasonable approach be for everyone to step back, wait and see what the final deal looks like if and when we have it in June?

Before anything was even partially completed, the GOP invited a foreign head of state to campaign against an agreement that, again, in your words, "no one knows what it contains." Before anything was partially complete, the GOP tried to derail the effort with a letter to the leaders of our enemies.

Your lack of disgust towards that side of the political ledger is duly noted.

  8. Former Mossad Chief Efraim Halevy Slams Netanyahu For Nuke Deal Criticism:

"In a scathing op-ed published Monday, former Mossad chief Efraim Halevy argued that U.S. President Barack Obama was right to call the agreement with Iran "historic" and that Iran made important and significant concessions during the negotiations (...) "For decades, Iran rejected the international community's demand to hold talks of any kind with respect to its nuclear program," Halevy wrote on Israeli news website Ynet. "The interim agreement reached in Lausanne proves that Tehran capitulated, by agreeing to conduct negotiations about its plans and the nuclear infrastructure it has built up for years, primarily in secret."

When two former heads of the Israeli intelligence (Halevy and Dagan) openly criticize Netanyahu in the press, then maybe the GOP should start paying attention. Even the Saudi government is cautiously on board. There is a point when obstructive partisanship crosses a line, and this line was crossed twice in one month. I call it "treason."

As for scud, I have no more patience or tolerance for this offensive, ignorant, low-life troll.

  9. More endorsements ...

Nuclear Experts Endorse Iran Nuclear Agreement In Open Letter:

On Monday, 30 top nuclear nonproliferation experts took sides in the debate by issuing a joint statement that strongly endorsed the agreement.

The statement also contains a line that directly contradicts one of the talking points of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who claimed over the weekend on NBC's "Meet The Press" that a deal "would spark an arms race among the Sunni states, a nuclear arms race in the Middle East."

The nuclear security experts contend just the opposite, stating that "the agreement reduces the likelihood of destabilizing nuclear weapons competition in the Middle East, and strengthens global efforts to prevent proliferation."

    (skip)

The authors also warned Congress against interference in the process, saying: "We call on the U.S. Congress to take no action that would impede further progress or undermine the American negotiators’ efforts to complete the final comprehensive agreement on time."

  10. Interesting comment as always, (O)ct. While I don't think net'n'yahoo is as bad as most people here, I am also willing to give the new agreement a chance.

There are indeed many top experts who strongly support this agreement. This includes Jews and friends of the Israeli people who would never, sorry, Skud, do anything antisemitic or sell the nation of Israel down the river.
