UN Envoy... U.S. Not Protecting Human Rights of OWS Protesters, Demands Explanation from Obama

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Apparently the OWS trash heaps that create sanitation problems in cities across America, as well  as potentially threatening the  health of the general public are of lesser consequence than "protecting"  the rights of the protestors to do as they damn well see fit.

In some circles {the United Nations to name one} the right of protesters to defecate in public {on police vehicles no less} is not considered as infringing on the rights of the general population that is forced to witness and smell such filth.

And what about the incidents of rape, stealing, murder, and illicit drug sales and use? The United Nation's envoy conveniently overlooks public safety in stating the UN's position on the "human" rights of protesters.

WASHINGTON -- The United Nations envoy for freedom of expression is drafting an official communication to the U.S. government demanding to know why federal officials are not protecting the rights of Occupy demonstrators whose protests are being disbanded -- sometimes violently -- by local authorities.

Frank La Rue, who serves as the U.N. "special rapporteur" for the protection of free expression, told HuffPost in an interview that the crackdowns against Occupy protesters appear to be violating their human and constitutional rights.

"I believe in city ordinances and I believe in maintaining urban order," he said Thursday. "But on the other hand I also believe that the state -- in this case the federal state -- has an obligation to protect and promote human rights."

"If I were going to pit a city ordinance against human rights, I would always take human rights," he continued.

La Rue, a longtime Guatemalan human rights activist who has held his U.N. post for three years, said it's clear to him that the protesters have a right to occupy public spaces "as long as that doesn't severely affect the rights of others."{Read More}

If Obama had any balls he'd diplomatically advise the envoy and the UN to go piss up a rope.

UPDATE: In related OWS news... The "movement" is apparently in the process of establishing new direction and strategy as cities are acting responsibly to insure the public safety and health.

(Jammie Wearing Fools) - We’re rapidly approaching the point where one guy shouting on a street corner declaring war against capitalism will still draw media attention. Well, now that the Democrat-orchestrated OWS movement has collapsed, they’re trying to be creative in an pathetic effort to stay relevant.

Is there adult out there that can let them know it’s finished?

With protest camps being cleared out of many US cities, the “Occupy” movement targeting Wall Street and economic inequality is searching for new targets as it strives to remain relevant.

Some of the demonstrators are launching long marches or setting up targeted protests, others are setting up street performances to get their message across.

“Although many occupations have been taken down, the occupation movement is still alive,” said Cologino Rivera, 21, a member of the original Occupy Wall Street group that has been evicted from New York’s Zuccotti Park.

“We are in a key moment in the occupation movement… the governments now are seeing us as a threat,” he said, saying this is the reason for evictions from New York, Los Angeles and other cites.

A threat to public health, perhaps, but beyond that, um, no, Cologino, you’re no threat to any one.

Hate to break the news, but you’re done.

The Occupy groups are also joining forces with labor unions to target telecom giant Verizon, claiming the company is cutting jobs and worker benefits despite hefty profits.

Yeah, because the unions really flexed their muscle the last time they took on Verizon. (Continue Reading)

  1. When I was kid, I was really wild. And though I probably would have avoided the OWS (cop magnet), I give them a lot of credit. They are really angry about something really important. They're not ranting like old schizy drunks about Obama being a communist Muslim fascist, because, hey, that would be pretty stupid, right?

They are focusing on the source of the second existentially dangerous corruption of our nation (and the first would be our military empire). "Wall Street" , in other words, the corporatocracy. I'm not talking about most businesses in America. I'm talking about trusts dictating sector markets who collectively run the nation while preying on each other. It's exceedingly dangerous. The markets have run out of steam from years of boom and bust, and have no way to stop these interests from taking advantage of our exhaustion.

The OWS are the angry young people who want this ended. They want the bribery out of the government, and it's "Wall Street" doing the bribing. Meanwhile, the only moneyed interest for the people are the unions, and they're nothing but conservative pawns these days, with a Democratic party that has been Republican Lite for 35 years. Just the same, some people blame the unions for all our woes, and ignore the fact that they wouldn't exist if we didn't have a vicious and stupid corporatocracy.

I like the OWS, whatever they do. They're not going to do anything we wouldn't see at any other large gathering of angry young people. I give them credit for their civil disobedience. We need more of that these days. No more sloganeering! Let's have some good ol' fashion civil disobedience!

We could use a Ben Franklin these days. Loosen up!

  2. No jmj, OWS has a huge element of miscreants that are directionless and without purpose. Other than to get whatever they desire without any effort whatsoever to earn it. And, as the record shows, many have no respect for the rights of others. IE: they accept no responsibility for how their primitive actions affect others.

And I'll say it for Obama... Mr. Envoy, you and the United Nations can go piss up a rope!

As to Ben Franklin, well, somehow that fine gentleman and would likely agree with me, not you and Mr. Envoy.

Now, the desire to end crony capitalism, corporatism, tax payer funded bailouts of corporations determined "too big to fail" by the government, and reduce the MIC to a reasonable size is something I can support. What OWS has morphed into I hve no time for or desire to be a part of.

As usual the modern "lefties without direction" cinched my lack of further interest because it has become nothing more than twaddle.

  3. "OWS has a huge element of miscreants that are directionless and without purpose."

No. Les. They are the kids, they are the future, and they see obvious corruption emanating from Wall Street you just don't want to see.

  4. Jersey said: "and the first would be our military empire"

Why focus on something that simply does not exist?

"Meanwhile, the only moneyed interest for the people are the unions"

Entirely untrue, as the big moneyed unions are anti-worker, typically fighting against workers' rights, and only having the money because these unions force workers to join and pay dues.

  5. Jersey is delusional. If OWS wants to make an impact, they should conduct investigations of the Wall Street empire, as Ben Stein suggests, in the manner of citizen investigators who did such things in the 60's and 70's. At least the radicals back then were educated and knew how to roll up their sleeves.

They should be marching on DC, not Wall Street. Our Demicans and Republicrat corporate statists built this crony crapitalist edifice, and they can tear it down.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Silver,

Agreed. I would support any march upon DC and Congress to protest their corruption and inability to govern properly.

The OWS folks just don't get that. It is easier to blame the wealthy for their ills instead of those who actually helped the wealthy become wealthy a bit with their legislation.

Wall Street is a symptom. Our Federal Government is the real disease.

  7. Now marching on the hub of corruption, what a novel idea ;) One can only contemplate what tyrants OWS types might be. I find it interesting they don't get the connection.

  8. Les, your blind seething hatred for these kids, and our government, is rather disturbing. You guys will stretch hypocrisy to the nth as apologetics of Wall Street. It's not just disturbing - it's schizy.

  9. We all have rights. But once those rights impinge upon the rights of others (in this particular instance, the rights of local businesses, the rights of others to use the facilities, etc.), they cease. In terms of the New York City situation, Mr. Bloomberg was more than patient and when he acted he acted decisively. I have zero problem with it.............Oh, and a note to any OWS people out there who plan to impede my movement or prevent me from enjoying a facility, three little words of caution to 'em; wear a cup.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Also, these people want to make a difference, have them lobby their representative and push for the law that in the future will ban ALL insider trading, even that which applies to such miserable cretins as John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi. No, it's not the entire answer but it's a start.

    ReplyDelete
  11. JMJ - You are disturbing in that you lack the ability to separate the good from the not good within the OWS protests. It is you who is schizo I have no hate for anyone. The issue is the RESPECT for the rights of others as well as self respect. Get a grip jmj on reality.
