American Workforce - 2'nd to None

Labor Day 2009 and  this proponent of free market capitalism wants to thank every laborer and technician for keeping the engines of  production running smoothly and efficiently. Were it not for the creative and productive capacity if of the American workforce we would not have achieved the the economic, and social preeminence we have enjoyed as a nation for over 200 years.

The video below, President Obama's Labor Day address to the American people sounds rational and reasonable. If one listens only to the rhetoric it could be considered  a positive and almost uplifting address. However, if one listens closely to the President's words it becomes clear he is talking about further government control and influence over the private and business sector.

Federal Government regulation of  the business sector has negative results. Regulations on business has lead to increased costs and lower productive output than would have been achieved absent government regulation. When government places costly regulations on business and industry it serves to drive costs up which naturally get passed on to the public in the form of higher prices. When the increase in the price of goods or services are the result of added cost to business in order to comply with government regulation the consumer is essentially paying an added tax on his income.

Additionally the increased costs to business as a result of government regulation makes it difficult for American business to compete in the global economy. Because the cost of regulation serves to drive down productivity and hurt competiveness American businesses relocate, often offshore, to avoid the additional costs. Or they outsource production to non US manufacturers who do not have the high cost of regulation and are able to deliver the product to the American market at lower prices.

The result of American business relocating offshore, or outsourcing production to non US manufacturers results in the loss of jobs in America. Given this fact wouldn't it seem rational and prudent for government to relax it's regulatory zeal and lower the corporate tax rate so our businesses can compete more effectively in the global marketplace?

It is a testament to the American workforce that it competes as well as it does given the adverse climate created by government regulation and high corporate tax  structure. Just  imagine what we could do if only government would get out of our way.
