Chain letters are something that occasionally get read and almost never get passed on. Speaking for myself that is. But every so often one comes along that because of the simple truth and wisdom are deserving of spreading as far and wide as possible.


A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.

His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready.

As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

I love it, he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.

Mr. Jones, you haven't seen the room; just wait.

'That doesn't have anything to do with it,' he replied.

'Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged, it's how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it.'

'It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away.. Just for this time in my life..

Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you've put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories!

Everything except except the superstious miracle part is true. Well, that is unless the lfe you may change is your own and in that case you might very well feel as if you received a miricle.

    RN: I read it as that the whole thing was a fable. and that you approved of the wisdom, and the ideas, except for that miracle line. That the truths were general, and that it wasn't to be taken as an actual anecdote. Or was I wrong?

    Sounds like a "fable" from the plutocrats...accept your crappy lot in life and be happy about it. The guy should be happy he isn't homeless in his old age... but instead gets to have his life savings slowly drained away. Unless his savings run out before he dies and he has to go live with his kids... or on the street.

      Wow. I'm surprised he got his "plutocrats" out of this one. But I shouldn't be, right, Les? This time he seemed like a parody of himself. Which ordinarily is a parody of himself... ad infinitim. Anyway, it's clear from his reading and comment that he thinks that happiness is something that the government owes to you, and people who get off their a** and do something productive (smeared as "plutocrats") are what stands in the way of it. Or something like that.

    Nothing like that, actually. I've never "smeared" anyone as a plutocrat. The plutocrats smear themselves with their hatred for our democracy. A hate that many on the Right share. I'm 100 percent behind "people who get off their a** and do something productive". I'm opposed when the actual productive people have the fruits of their labor stolen from them by those at the top who wrongly believe they can shaft workers and call that THEIR productivity.

    I guess that RN and dmarks are with those who look at nursing home residents as pigeons to be plucked. And believe that ALL the savings of these people should end up with those who own the nursing homes.

    According to this source, "...the average cost of a semiprivate room in a nursing home rose ... rose from $214 a day, or $78,110 for the year, in 2011 to $222 a day or $81,030 in 2012".

    How long can an average elderly person afford such a huge expense?

      I work in a convalescent home and 80-90% of the people there are on Title 19. Nobody gets thrown out on the streets. As for those who own the nursing homes getting rich, that is extremely rare in that the profit margin is only a couple of percent and the Medicaid reimbursements have essentially flatlined.......And, yes, the patients do have to spend down but spouses get to keep their 50% and hardly if ever have to file bankruptcy.

      We've had over 30 convalescent homes go out of business in the recent years in CT and, surprise, surprise, pretty much all of them were union homes. Now that's some serious plutocracy.

The good news is unemployment fell to a four year low, certainly at year six in Obama's Presidential tenure strikes a positive note. Or does it?
