The Entire John F Kennedy 'Secret Society' Speech' circa 1961

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Was feeling a bit nostalgic today, especially in light of the current political climate and the obvious dumbing down of our national politicians and their superficial rhetoric. Since I find myself underwhelmed by the shallowness of Mitt Romney's utterances, and scratching my head at Barrack Obama's audacity a stroll back in time to find a politician of substance just seemed to me what the doctor would order. And so I did.

Note the relevancy to today beginning at approximately the 7 minute mark.

Being old enough to remember JFK I recall having been impressed by him even at a young age. As I now reflect back on those days I wonder if America will ever see another President from either major party who will comport themselves with the dignity and stature JFK did. One with a vision that can take us to the moon and beyond.

  1. Good communicators tailor their message to the audience. That is why political speech continues to be dumbed down.

    1. So in plain English what you're really saying is the population, and thus America in general has been "dumbed down."

Effective communicators, if they are really leaders also communicate a vision that resonates with the people that is realistic, achievable, principled, unifying, and if even partially accomplished moves the country forward making it stronger.

For us to retain individual liberties for future generations to enjoy will requires strong communicators and individuals with big ideas as well as strong principled leadership that believes in the strength of our constitutional principles and the right of all men and women to free.

  2. We're too paranoid, prude, and proselytizing a culture to allow flawed human beings to become great leaders.

    It's a shame.

I think here, Les, I owe you an apology, and notice another point. Ayn Rand was a uniquely flawed human being just like everybody else. Yet she had a powerfully brilliant way of looking at things. Not everyone agrees with her, but when we argue her flaws instead of her ideas, then we degenerate the whole conversation.

I've been guilty of that, and for that I'm sorry.

I do not agree with Rand's philosophy, but I certainly do not believe Objectivists are morons, and I think we should at listen to them as they do have much to offer.

It's a shame that we're so defensively divisive these days, too. There are overlaps of political ideology all over the place, but partisanship (of every kind) stifles action that should seem ubiquitous and natural to a civilized society.

Of course, I've been guilty of that too. And you too, Les,... and Silver, et al.

    1. I thank you for this acknowledgement that Rand, those who advocate her ideas, and Objectivists are not kooks and delusional idiots.

Show me a perfect human being and I'll show you eternity. Neither exists for humans on this earth. All are flawed at some level, even Rand had her faults which she was unable to see our correct. Admittedly they were fewer than perhaps most.

I have been trying, although often unsuccessfully to bridge the ideological gulf that exists with so many on the left and the right. My recent posting trend I think indicates that.

I accept your apology. although I expected none and certainly none was needed or required. Suffice it to say honest dialogue, debate, and even heated exchanges are positive and often necessary, in so long as they remain respectful and void of inappropriate language or personal attacks and name calling.

I don't know the answer to bridging the ideological divide or how to solve all the problems we face. I do know that gestures such as your go a long way in helping. I have a great deal of respect for your overture today.

Yes Jersey I too have been guilty of partisanship in the extreme, and have acknowledged this on other occasions. I will remain committed to my principles and what I believe is right, as you and all others should. The process of open honest dialogue does lead to better ways. If all have an active mind, are willing to think outside the box, and here is the tough part, be willing to acknowledge better ideas or practices when they come along as the work of honest open dialogue.

JFK perhaps wasn't the most brilliant but he is one who should be admired for many reasons.
