The United States is losing approximately $1 trillion in unpaid taxes every year, Charles Rettig, the Internal Revenue Service commissioner, estimated on Tuesday, arguing that the agency lacks the resources to catch tax cheats.

The so-called tax gap has surged in the last decade. The last official estimate from the I.R.S. was that an average of $441 billion per year went unpaid from 2011 to 2013. Most of the unpaid taxes are the result of evasion by the wealthy and large corporations, Mr. Rettig said.

  1. Seems to me an investment of 2 million a year in additional agents would more than pay for itself in recovered owed taxes.

The problem is the current iteration of the GOP doesn't believe in taxes, much less efficient government, so they will never support it.

But I would like to see a smart Dem, if Pelosi and Schumer would allow it, advance a simple bill to add a thousand IRS auditors tasked with catching cheaters and then applying 100% of the recovered funds to reducing the debt.

If the cited numbers are correct, in a couple of years, we could knock at least a couple of trillion off our debt load.

Why wouldn't the GOP support this? And why won't the Dems do it?

    1. To start off with I completely agree with your idea Dave. It makes perfect common sense.

I have always been a fiscal conservative and believe that for any tax payer dollars to be spent requires, or should require, justification. And, I have always understood that their is duplicity and waste in the federal budget. Just as our founders predicted might happen.

However, the federal government is NOT the enemy, or at least it should not be considered so. Although I realize the present crop of Trumpublicans and even some old time republicans believe the "{gubermint" is nothing but an annoyance at best and a nefarious evil at it's worst. They are wrong. But if they said it was the conservatives and republicans then they would be more than partially right.

Anyway, as RMN once said "We're all Keynesians now". Especially true when it comes to republican/Trumpublican conservatives. Their moto ought to be Cut taxes to the bare bones... Spend profusely on wars and occupations... Ignore the infrastructure... Ignore climate change... Discount science... Spend like a drunken sailor (especially if it benefits the wealthy... Drive the federal debt into the stratosphere... Leave the grandchildren and GGC holding that bag... and on and on. Anyone with even a modicum understanding of economics and has been paying honest attention to politics knows this to be true.

So Dave, I have NEVER been more disenchanted and degusted with our federal government as it was left by tRump and his lying mental midgets. And since Trumpism and the Trumpublicans are going no where and their supporters are giving every indication of pushing their demented agenda I see absolutely no chance that Biden will succeed for long. The Trumpublican GQP and the Manchin's of the democratic party ain't gonna allow it for long. Frankly, I actually believe within 25-30 years we will be a third world shit hole thanks to the Trumpublican GQP. I'll be dead by then. Thank the spirits very much.
