"Christians" Use Bible In Defense of Kavanaugh...

Christians Use Bible To Defend Kavanaugh And Discredit Sexual Assault Survivors (Image via Twitter)

Truly reprehensible. Many conservative X'tians (especially Evangelicals) do not deserve to be considered Christian as they are fathoms beneath the dignity of Christ's legacy.

Patheos - Deplorable: Conservative Christians are using the Bible to defend Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and discredit victims of sexual assault.

On social media conservative Christians are sharing a meme taken from the Book of Genesis and involving Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. The meme is being used as a vehicle to try and discredit survivors of sexual assault in general, and Kavanaugh’s victims in particular.
For those unfamiliar, the story depicts Joseph as a victim, falsely accused of  sexual assault by Potiphar’s wife.
The story involving Joseph and Potiphar’s wife appears in Genesis 39:10-15:
10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.
11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak and said, “Come to bed with me!” But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.
13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed. 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”

After the false accusation, the story goes, Joseph was sent to prison. The story is currently being used as a rallying cry for conservative Christians trying to defend the actions of Kavanaugh.

Bottom line: Deplorable conservative Christians are using a Bible verse dealing with Joseph and Potiphar’s wife to discredit sexual assault survivors in general, and the victims of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in particular.

This is what the GOP and its conservative X'tian membership believes. They have NO understanding and grasp as to what ethics and morality really mean.

  1. RN... that's hardly the focus of the write's article. in fact, that picture you posted is not even part of what he was saying.

His main thrust, which I've heard from a lot of conservatives, is that sometimes men lie about this type of behavior and sometimes women do...

Here's his quote... "Let me state two undeniable truths right up front. One: Sometimes women are victimized by men who sexually assault them. Two: Sometimes women victimize men by falsely claiming to have been sexually assaulted."

Now that seems very even handed to me.

He goes on to quote the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife and the posits her lying alongside other contemporary examples of women lying, or getting the facts wrong, about sexual assaults. Think Tawana Bradley and the case involving the Duke lacrosse team.

I run in evangelical circles. I can tell you that I've heard ppl say we should believe her, and believe him. I've heard ppl say one or the other is lying. I've yet to meet anyone who has used the Potiphar reference as evidence of her lying. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, I'm just saying I've never personally heard it.

But this is the binary world in which we live.

I'm guessing if I was to look at some extreme leftists facebook of twitter accounts, I'd find some pretty bad stuff condemning Kavanaugh.

The truth is one of these two folks is lying. How do we determine which one? Ppl are grasping at straws to figure it out.

You know I appreciate you RN, but you might have missed the mark on this one.

  2. I may have Dave, but I don't think so. Too many times so called Christians have used ancient bible verses and stories t justify behaviors that are not exactly ethical or moral. I know it isn't a majority of Christians who do so. However I'm merely pointing out there are those who do as the article from Patheos states.

Having said the above, the bottom line for me at this point is Kavanaugh demonstrated last Thursday that he has neither the temperament of the ability to overcome his biases (I actually believe he hates liberals) and maintain any degree of impartiality. Retired Justice John Paul Stevens apparently agrees with me on this.

Truth is I believe Ford and Ramirez over Kavanaugh. I believe the GOP and tRump controlled the supplemental FBI "investigation" so tightly that it produced the results tRump and his party leadership wanted. And, I believe they are wrong.

I used to be a republican. I started criticizing the GOP leadership for its hypocrisy years ago. The GOP leadership has continually gotten less ethical and more hypocritical. It is now to the point I have little to no respect for the GOP and its leadership.

I try to maintain a level of impartiality but the republicans and so called conservatives make it damn hard more often than not Dave.

  3. "I try to maintain a level of impartiality but the republicans and so called conservatives make it damn hard more often than not Dave."

Very true words RN... very true. Even truer in my context as an evangelical myself. My tribe if you will, has generally, with no explanation, eschewed all the principles they supposedly stood for in public leadership before this past election.

I think you are right on whether or not Kav has the temperament to be a good, honest and fair judge, albeit conservative. But the Dems did not make that case initially. It only came up as he defended his "honor."

I wonder if it could be viewed like this...

The Dems, admittedly looking for a way to derail the nomination, went for the worst example of character they could find. It was very skinny on facts that could be verified. In the effort, Kav's reputation was torn to shreds. He blew up and what he claims is a false charge and then the Dems, who brought the "false charge" slam him for blowing up.

in effect, they are using a perfectly normal reaction to a false charge and character assassination they made themselves, as another pretext to DQ the guy.

This is all pretty uncharted territory in recent times. The most contentious confirmation I can remember is Bork and the GOP is still seething over that.

His reaction may very well be understandable Dave. However, his seething attack on democrats and his overall temperament during the hearing last Thursday was more typical of a guilty person than one who KNOWS they are innocent of the allegations brought against them. Kavanaugh is a judge, I wonder how he would respond to a witness in his court who acted as he did last Thursday. As an attorney and judge he must know that perceptions most often become a persons reality. Kavanaugh ought to have taken the high road. Instead he chose to take the low road. A road that removed any thought from rational observers that he had the ability to maintain non emotional impartiality.

All we can hope for at this point, since he will be confirmed, is that he surprises us and turns out to be honest on the bench, impartial, and just. Time will soon tell. Won't it?

  5. My concern is not what he did as a rich kid, but that he may be another Scalia (Trump has appointed more lower judges than any president and two
conservative SCOTUS in his tenure thus far: pure political ramrodding enabled by control of every branch of government. Progress is inevitable,
progress is beneficial..unless you are an Amish farmer. It is, as now portraid, some sort of evil cabal. Not being Evangelical, I tend to agree
with most biblical scholars that the Joseph tale was written around 500 BC
and inserted into the 12th century BC book of Genesis as an exemplary tome
for the the Hebrews of the time. The argument is moot from both sides, now
that we have a packed court. We live in interesting times..and I suspect
History will note the beginning of the decline of united Americans and their country. Oh well, cheer up!

  6. We are no longer a united nation BB Idaho. We are seriously divided and the seeds of modern division reach all the way back to the War Between the States. Likely reaching back as far as the early post Revolutionary War times.

It was inevitable that it would come to this. And, it WILL get worse. But as one of my sons said, and I agree with him, Every great and powerful nation state has reached its apex of influence and power only to fall into decline and eventually recede to relative obscurity. Given what we are witnessing (and have been for 40 years at least) we are simply seeing the handwriting on the wall.

  7. Speaking of Christians, is Virgin Birth” an excuse for sexual assault?

  8. Liberals are prone to say really ignorant things....a perfect example is this Jerry Critter

  9. The myth of The Virgin birth, started by Jewish folks approximately 2018 years ago, was a successful attempt at mending and preserving the reputation of Mary who got herself pregnant out of wedlock. A serious social issue at the time.

Of course the Virgin birth is a myth. Christians after the death of Christ at the hands of the Pharisees and Pontius Pilate perpetuated the myth of the Virgin birth in support of the divinity the Christian sect of Judaism believed Christ had. IOW the myth of the Virgin birth supports the Jewish prophesy and Christian belief that Christ, a man, was the son of god.

Even today we as people are not immune from believing myths.

    Thanks for your comment Jerry.
