We Already Knew... Now It's Official... What Will Trump and His Minions Say?

study published on Friday appears to confirm what news reports suggested long ago: President Trump’s campaign rallies were associated with a rise in violence when they came to town.

A city that hosted a Trump rally saw an average of 2.3 more assaults reported on the day of the event than on a typical day, according to the study, led by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and published in the journal Epidemiology. The authors found no corresponding link between assaults and rallies for Mr. Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

“It appeared to be a phenomenon that’s unique to Donald Trump’s rally,” said Christopher Morrison, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania and the lead author of the study.

Mr. Trump himself repeatedly seemed to endorse attacks on his detractors, too.

“Maybe he should have been roughed up,” he said of one protester who was reportedly punched and kicked in November 2015. “I’d like to punch him in the face, I’ll tell ya,” he said of another a few months later. He even offered to pay legal fees for his supporters if they became too aggressive.

The supporters also often aimed offensive and violent rhetoric at Mrs. Clinton, suggesting she be killed.

To determine whether those words and news reports corresponded with an actual shift in violence, the researchers compiled a list of 31 Trump rallies and 38 Clinton rallies held in cities with assault data available online.

They compared the number of assaults reported on the day of the rally to the number reported on the corresponding day of the week, for each of the four weeks before and after the event.

On a typical day, cities saw an average of 19.4 assaults, they found. On the day of a Trump rally, that number rose to 21.7.

The pattern held even when the researchers controlled for the influence of factors like population size, data sources and the day used for the comparison.

The researchers offered two explanations for the increase in assaults. Either they were the result of clashes at or near the rallies, or they occurred elsewhere in the cities after the aggressive mood on display by Mr. Trump, his supporters or his opponents had spread through “social contagion.”

People of decency and rational mind cannot help but wonder just how in the hell Donald J. Trump, given his multitude of egregious character flaws could have ever been elected by the people of tis country to the highest office in the land.

  1. OT... AG Session fires former FBI Deputy Director two days before his retirement. Thus impacting the man's retirement he earned over 21 years of service.

The stench of a vindictive presnit hangs over this like flies on horse shit. tRump has had it in for McCabe going back to 2015 and his desire to see him fired is well known.

There is more to the story than the "official statement" coming out of the DOJ. You can bet on it.

    WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND.

Mueller's investigative Feight Train is aimed at tRump's gonads. If there is any justice at all the Freight Train will make a direct hit, severing tRump's balls from his bloated ignorant body.

  2. Decency... if you feel, as many supporters of Trump do, that America is getting scammed and taken advantage of by other international players and countries, then decency be damned, we've got to win!

How else to explain conservatives jettisoning their values of character, politeness, diplomacy and manners to elect DJT? Even they admit he's a cad, but they like the way he's tweaking his nose at people they've long believed are not acting in the interests of America.

Many in America would rather go it alone in the world, close the borders, make our own products and say to the rest of the world... "Screw you, we're done with helping you."

I can certainly understand their viewpoint, and at the same time lament the loss of basic and common decency.

  3. Should the USA choose to go it alone and screw the rest of the world we WILL BE screwing ourselves as the end result.

We are in a global interdependent economic system already. Taking the approach above will be a certain road to 3'rd world economic status Dave. IMO anyway.

We need to be smarter as well as more agile and Wiley.

  4. Well Les, that's one view. The other, taken by many of the #MAGA folks is that among all countries, the US and the US alone, can go it alone. What is it we need that we do not produce here in sufficient quantities? In their view, we can 100% disconnect from the rest of the "losers."

I'm not agreeing with them, I just think that's how they're thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I don't disagree with your thinking regarding the MAGA folks. At one point in my life I was a inclined to agree. In fact I still think we need to focus on negotiating trade deals that better protect our interests. For us to "go it alone" is, IMO, shortsighted and foolish.

I do get that tRump The Orange Turd successfully tapped into the fear and bigotry and played it well enough to get himself elected Dave. I suppose my closing statement was rhetorical. But I can't understand how so many couldn't or wouldn't think through the ramifications of again becoming isolationist.

BTW, I still believe we cannot afford to be the world's policemen or its charity foundation. I guess what I'm saying is common sense should dictate a balance be achieved. But that takes reasonable and sincere compromise.

  6. One can never use the words "reasonable" or "sincere" when talking about the Trump administration. Remember how he started his term in office: by ordering a closing of the borders to certain Muslim nations without consulting the State Department, Homeland Security, or any other department that knows about following the rule of law in such matters. Trump was immediately stopped in his reckless first actions. His idea of "going it alone" was going without first checking the legality of closing out people of certain religious beliefs.

Just heard this afternoon that Andrew McCabe has copious notes on every meeting he had with Trump, and that Mueller probably is in possession of those notes.

Trump acted like a petty tin-pot dictator. Imagine any president bragging about firing someone as Trump did. He's never developed emotionally beyond that of a junior high school mean girl.

  7. Your assessment of The Orange Turd (again borrowing Dervish's name for tRump) is spot on.

He is incapable of basic honesty, decency, or humanity. He is simply a monstrous ass who cares only for himself.

  9. Thanks for the link Shaw. The articles argument is of course, spot on.

One thing that stands out is the unprofessional and unbecoming behavior of The Orange Turd.

Sessions is likely safe for the time being.

  10. Trump's rallies undoubtedly stoke the aggressive impulses of people who are angry and whose impulse control wasn't very good to begin with. Hardly surprising that they correlate with increased assaults.

Since Parkland, right-wing sites have been trying to blame violent video games, although in fact releases of such games correlate with decreases in real-world violence. Of course they'll never look at Trump rallies.

As for Trump's unilateralism, he doesn't even seem to grasp the basic point that starting a trade war with China will make the regime there less likely to cooperate in handling North Korea. He seems to think we're still living in the decades right after World War II, when the US was an economic colossus in a world of dwarfs. Despite him, western Europe is standing by the UK in dealing with Russia over the Skripal attack, and their economies combined are bigger than that of the US. Mexico is now the world's 12th-biggest economy and our second-biggest export market, though in light of Trump's endless insults, they're understandably looking for other suppliers for the things they buy from us. Japan and South Korea are ahead of us technologically in some areas. In some ways the US already resembles a Third World country by European and Japanese standards. This is not the world of 1980 any more, whatever Trump thinks -- the US can't just push everyone else around with no consequences.

  11. Infidel... you brought up Mexico, the place I work and a country I love. I am not sure ppl here realize the damage being done day in and day out to not just our reputation there, but, to use Kissinger's word, our interests.

Who wants an adversarial relationship with one of your biggest trading partners and literally, your next door neighbor. Once again we've made sure Mexico knows we don't value them as an ally or a friend.
