The Future of Our Democratic Republic At Stake...

President Trump fired off angry tweets Sunday morning railing against the Justice Department special counsel’s Russia investigation and attacking the integrity of former FBI director James B. Comey and his former deputy, Andrew McCabe, charging that their notes from conversations with him were “Fake Memos.”

For the second straight day, Trump was unrestrained in his commentary about Robert S. Mueller III’s expanding investigation, which is probing not only Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible links to the Trump campaign, but also whether the president has sought to obstruct justice.

After Trump’s personal attorney, John Dowd, called Saturday for an end to the Mueller probe, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Sunday urged the president and his legal team to cooperate fully with the investigation and warned of serious ramifications if they did not.

In one of his tweets, Trump protested
, “Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans? Another Dem recently added ... does anyone think this is fair? And yet, there is NO COLLUSION!”

Then there is this:

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) urged President Donald Trump and his lawyer on Sunday to stop flailing at special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation and to let the probe continue unimpeded.

"When you are innocent … act like it," Gowdy said on “Fox News Sunday" when asked about Trump's repeated Twitter attacks on Mueller, whose probe has become increasingly perilous to the president and his inner circle. "If you’ve done nothing wrong, you should want the investigation to be as fulsome and thorough as possible."

Gowdy's comments came a day after Trump's attorney John Dowd called for Mueller's investigation to be shut down. Gowdy issued the same exhortation to Dowd: "If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it.”

Then there is this:

Congressional Republicans and conservative pundits had the chance to signal Trump his attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable—but they sent the opposite message.

President Trump raged at his TV on Sunday morning. And yet on balance, he had a pretty good weekend. He got a measure of revenge upon the hated FBI, firing former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe two days before his pension vested. He successfully coerced his balky attorney general, Jeff Sessions, into speeding up the FBI’s processes to enable the firing before McCabe’s retirement date.

Beyond this vindictive fun for the president, he achieved something politically important. The Trump administration is offering a not very convincing story about the McCabe firing. It is insisting that the decision was taken internally by the Department of Justice, and that president’s repeated and emphatic demands—public and private—had nothing whatsoever to do with it.

SKIP

But in the hours since the McCabe firing, Trump’s enablers in Congress and in conservative media have evinced no such concern. They have accepted the story that McCabe was honestly investigated and independently disciplined without qualm or quibble. In the words of former Fox News anchor Brit Hume:

"It’s certainly conceivable that Trump, being Trump, would reach into the inner workings of the FBI and Justice Dept. to frame Andrew McCabe and get him fired. But anyone who claims that’s what happened needs to provide evidence to back it up. Mere supposition doesn’t cut it."

But aren’t the president’s own written and globally published demands for a firing some kind of evidence?

Apparently not.

Given what we have observed of the Trump methodology and his dangerously flawed character, every patriotic and liberty loving American ought to be extremely concerned with the emotionally and mentally unstable man in the Oval Office. The damage he and his party could inflict on our democratic republic and its institutions is grave and the threat of it happening very real.

With 2018 approaching and 2020 not far behind consider your support and vole very carefully. Your children and grandchildren's future depends on it.

  1. An innocent man does't act the way Trump is acting. He's flailing and running scared. Bannon was on to something when he said Mueller and his investigators were experts on money laundering. It appears more and more like the paniking Trump knows that certain parts of his vulnerable anatomy are getting squeezed. But good.

  3. I saw the interview with Gowdy and he looked positively sane. Maybe he's gonna run? It should be noted that the crew of the USS Mothership is angry at him for not being more partisan. Here's a comment from the good capitan bemoaning that "their" news is not more partisan... "I watch a fair amount of FOX but turn it off much more often than I ever did because... they’re not as condemnatory toward the Left sometimes as they ought to be."

No thought that maybe, just maybe, what those non condemning ppl have to say is accurate.

All of that said, every GOP/Conservative/Rightwing pundit I saw today said a version of the same thing... If Trump is innocent, let the investigation go on, there should be nothing to worry about.

I assume they're working overtime to discredit Mueller because they're worried that where there is smoke, there's fire...

Perhaps he is saying tRump and his administration should seek to orchestrate as complimentary or flattering an assessment of his actions as possible. Which it seems would require he shut the F up and send the message he is not at all concerned because he knows he is innocent.

Of course we know he is very likely as guilty as hell, and so does Gowdy. tRump is also as dumb as a stump when it comes to this sort of thing. At least IMO.

  5. RN... "The Future of our Democratic Republic at Stake"

I'm not so sure. Trump is a threat for sure, but at stake, on his account? Of that, I am not so certain.

Are we close to where we were prior to the Civil War? Back then our future really was at stake. Besides that, I'm not convinced that Trump is where our worry should lie. That, to me, rests with the GOP elected ppl in congress and their supporters. Like battered wives unable to leave a faithful provider, they cannot abandon DJT because doing so would cost them personally their seats in congress.

So if there is a true existential threat, it's less about Trump and more about the folks who are supposed to offer checks and balances.

We faced down Watergate in the 70's. That was a threat.

But of course, I could be wrong. I am not convinced the American experiment was designed to last through the centuries. Maybe 300 years is it... who knows?

In which case, DJT and the GOP are just players in what would've happened anyways. A candle will always run out of wick, no matter who lights it. Perhaps that is us, and the candle is finally burning out.

We may not be as close YET, but, if tRump survives the Mueller investigation, and somehow I can't help but believe he may, we could very well find ourselves there soon. IMO the republican party has no scruples at this point. With the exception of a few the party is willing to sell its soul to the highest bidder to remain in power. I have at this point NO respect for the party and if tRump survives and gets reelected were a screwed nation. Screwed from within by a narcissistic power hungry beast with a party worse than he is.

We faced down Watergate in the 70's. That was a threat.

Yes, and them we still had republicans with principles that understood sometimes values and country had to be placed ahead and above party. NO MORE is this the case IMNHO.

But of course, I could be wrong. I am not convinced the American experiment was designed to last through the centuries. Maybe 300 years is it... who knows?

You are probably right. If you look at history the trajectory of all reat and powerful nation states pretty much follows the same curve. It is reasonable to believe the USA will do the same. But having said that our system of government and rule of law could survive a hell of a lot longer if We the People were capable of grasping what is necessary for it to survive. At this point it certainly looks like we are decidedly not capable.

In which case, DJT and the GOP are just players in what would've happened anyways. A candle will always run out of wick, no matter who lights it. Perhaps that is us, and the candle is finally burning out.

Yup. Unless the People are smart enough to figure out how to make and them attach additional wick before the old burns out. History will likely ultimately record that Americans failed the challenge.

  7. Lets NOT forget that Donald Trump won the election by laying out a full agenda for America, and the American people, while Hillary Clinton had nothing to say but, "Bwaaah, I wanna be President and, the First Women President and Trump is evil for trying to stop me. Because I deserve to be President"

Perhaps it was the fact that Crooked “Crazy” Hillary was too stupid to do the Electoral College math ( The Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President) and spent the last few days of the campaign talking to supporters in California, a state she had already won by a large margin while Trump, apparently was much better at math, and was hard at work campaigning in the swing states that eventually gave him the election.
And she's still falling down while running all over the world telling her who’s to blame now story.
Her latest jab at Donald Trump is calling him a Playboy, she should be totally ashamed of herself, as she’s the one who never said one world about her own “Husband playing “hide the cigar” I also remember you liberals defending Bill Clinton for using his female intern as a humidor in the Oval Office
And we're still enjoying the laughs.

Frankly, your comment deserves no respose and should be deleted. But I leave it standing for others to chuckle at.

HRC has absolutely no relevance to this post. But as with most far righties your reading comprehension is probably severely limited. Arrested development seems to be common among folks like yourself.

tRump appologists are not welcome here. So, DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YA IN THE ASS.
