It's Now Trump-vs-Clinton, Barring Some Miracle...

Rational Nation USA
Purveyor of Truth

It now looks almost certain the nation will be left with the choice of picking the lesser of two evils and in the process suffer through six more months of Trump negatives and hyperbolic BS.

Indianapolis (CNN) — As Donald Trump captures the mantle of presumptive Republican nominee, a new poll finds he begins his general election campaign well behind Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

The new CNN/ORC Poll, completed ahead of Trump's victory last night, found Clinton leads 54% to 41%, a 13-point edge over the New York businessman, her largest lead since last July.

Clinton is also more trusted than Trump on many issues voters rank as critically important, with one big exception. By a 50% to 45% margin, voters say Trump would do a better job handling the economy than Clinton would.

Clinton has the edge on a range of other issues. She is more trusted than Trump on terrorism (50% Clinton to 45% Trump), immigration (51% to 44%), health care (55% to 39%), the income gap (54% to 37%), foreign policy (61% to 36%), education (61% to 34%) and climate change (63% to 30%).

Overall, voters are evenly split on their opinion of Clinton -- 49% see her favorably and the same share unfavorably. But a decidedly larger group (56%) see Trump unfavorably than see him favorably (41%).

Trump and Clinton would be the most disliked major party nominees in CNN's polling dating back to 1992, with only two other candidates meriting less than 50% favorability heading into the election -- Mitt Romney was 44% in April 2012 and Bill Clinton was viewed positively by 42% of voters in April 1992.

Asked why they back Clinton or Trump, most of those behind each candidate say their preference in the matchup is more about opposing a candidate than supporting one. Among Clinton supporters, 51% said their choice was mostly about opposing Trump and 57% of Trump supporters said they went with him because they don't want Clinton in the White House.

Clinton trails by 7 points in a hypothetical general election matchup with Trump's one remaining competitor for the GOP nod, Ohio Gov. John Kasich. But her final opponent, Sanders, performs better than her with the remaining two Republicans, beating Trump by 16 percentage points and Kasich by 4 percentage points.

It is interesting that Kasich, who suspended his campaign Wednesday at 5:00 PM, was the only republican candidate who polls said could beat Clinton in a general election match up.

  1. "Americans are indeed a strange people."

Perhaps it shows a fatal flaw in our nomination process. There is definitely something wrong when the current process n both parties draws marginal candidates, at best.

  2. Looks like the brokered convention in which SOMEHOW Kasich becomes the nominee is definitely not in the cards any longer. Yet some deluded individuals actually thought it could happen. Including (obviously) Kasich himself.

  3. Actually Jerry I think the problem with drawing marginal (extreme) candidates is by far more pronounced in the TeaPubliCan GOP. At least at this juncture of political history.

Sanders has shown there is a growing support for his brand of socialist populism among the young voting age population. What he failed to do is to draw strong support from minority communities and and the "oldsters" of the party. I suspect that will likely change over time.

  4. Yeah Dervish, as soon as Cruz was soundly and roundly defeated in Indiana the stop Trump plan collapsed completely. Cruz is smart enough to recognize that so he suspended his campaign and Kasich finally admitted it was totally futile to continue.

As everyone knows I was hoping for a contested convention to stop Trump and thought Kasich by FAR the most sane choice for republicans. His experience and willingness to compromise and take a moderate position (expanding Medicaid in Ohio as an example) would have put republicans in a much stronger position to defeat HRC in November.

Folks don't call the GOP the Stupid Party for no reason.

  5. The flavor of unpopularity differs only by the constant attacks on Clinton for over a generation now: Trump earned his in a single primary season.

  6. Trump was always regarded as an eccentric egomaniac. Somehow, he mirrors the angry rabble that longs to be like him. What Trump seems to have accomplished is giving them permission to come out of the closet.

  7. A hoard of Trump wannabes? Now that is a damn scary thought (O)CT(O)PUS.

  8. The modern conservative movement is dead. I wonder what fictional past they'll want to go back to next...

  9. All things are relative to place, time, and circumstances. Consider that and it should be become clear that conservative, as well as liberal, are terms relative to the above.

As for the true died in the red reactionaries? One can only think they wish to return to 1776 for some reason known only to them.

  10. I don't like to cross swords with you at every opportunity. You have tolerated and accepted my point of view many times.

But it is simply difficult to consider Hillary as evil. I realize that this is a tried and true election cycle cliché. I'm not sure when it started. My best guess might be some mayoral election. Hotly contested between two highly partisan candidates. Since when are my fellow Americans considered evil?

Obviously it is a tired meme.

No. There has never been a national election when we have been forced to choose between the lesser of two evils. We are simply conditioned to believe that the other side is evil.

    Let me scratch my coconut...

  11. I view the phrase the lesser of two evils as a cliché frankly. For me it means the person likely to do the least damage to our political system, our prosperity, our standing in the world, and our security. It is absolutely clear to me that given the choice between HRC and Drumpf that person is HRC.

HRC is not evil in a literal sense, and, likely neither is Drumpf. that mantle Flying Junior is reserved for Ted Cruz. ;-)
