Dr. Carson Demonstrates His Deficient Understanding Of The Debt Ceiling...

Rational Nation USA
Purveyor of Truth

Kai Ryssdal during his interview with republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson asked a straight forward standard question regarding the debt ceiling, namely whether Dr. Carson believed we should raise the debt ceiling or not. Not raising the ceiling would of course result in the United States defaulting on its debt obligations. Dr. Carson's response made it clear he really doesn't understand the difference between the federal debt ceiling and the federal budget.

Ryssdal: All right, so let's talk about debt then and the budget. As you know, Treasury Secretary Lew has come out in the last couple of days and said, "We're gonna run out of money, we're gonna run out of borrowing authority, on the fifth of November." Should the Congress then and the president not raise the debt limit? Should we default on our debt?

Carson: Let me put it this way: if I were the president, I would not sign an increased budget. Absolutely would not do it. They would have to find a place to cut.

Ryssdal: To be clear, it's increasing the debt limit, not the budget, but I want to make sure I understand you. You'd let the United States default rather than raise the debt limit.

Carson: No, I would provide the kind of leadership that says, "Get on the stick guys, and stop messing around, and cut where you need to cut, because we're not raising any spending limits, period."

Ryssdal: I'm gonna try one more time, sir. This is debt that's already obligated. Would you not favor increasing the debt limit to pay the debts already incurred?

Carson: What I'm saying is what we have to do is restructure the way that we create debt. I mean if we continue along this, where does it stop? It never stops. You're always gonna ask the same question every year. And we're just gonna keep going down that pathway. That's one of the things I think that the people are tired of.

You think Carson is bluffing? He is not bluffing. This is a man who thinks “highfalutin scientists” concocted the theories of evolution and the origins of the universe for Satanic reasons. A reminder: Carson is the second-most-popular choice among Republicans to be their party’s nominee for president of the United States, behind the comparatively sober and well-informed Donald Trump.

When you think about it the statement Carson is the second-most-popular choice among Republicans to be their party’s nominee for president of the United States, behind the comparatively sober and well-informed Donald Trump is a most unnerving and sobering thought.

  1. I think Carson is a former brilliant surgeon who lost it. Something went wrong, mentally speaking. According to the National Enquirer, "the now retired doc allegedly butchered one patient's brain — and even left a sponge in another's skull". Mental problems might also explain why he thinks he can run for president when he clearly is not qualified.

The same thing has happened before, I believe. Ronald Reagan began his political career as a strong Democrat, then switched parties and spent several years as prez while suffering from Alzheimer's. Could Alzheimer's explain why Reagan switched parties? Has Carson always identified as a Republican? If not, I think there could definitely be something to my theory. Which is not to say Carson has Alzheimer's, but I think there could be SOME mental issue.

    1. Carson was a brilliant brain surgeon. He should have remained a retired and respected neurosurgeon.

I take everything published in the NE with a grain of salt until I read it in reputable publication.

Ronald Reagan was not suffering from Alzheimer's when he switched parties. Your comment is a cheap shot.

Reagan was the governor of California before he was elected president and carried qualifications from his executive experience as governor of California.

He likely was suffering from early stage dementia in his 2'nd term as president.

Now, this post has nothing to do with Reagan. Theref ouu re any further off topic comments will be deleted.

  2. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a brilliant astrophysicist with liberal leanings. Would he make a great president? No. Just because he's outstanding in a scientific discipline does not automatically make him a brilliant candidate for the presidency. The people supporting Dr. Carson refuse to see his goofball comments for what they are. They believe being a brilliant brain surgeon translates to being a sharp politician. Clearly, Dr. Carson is not the latter. He's embarrassing himself on a daily basis. Why wouldn't he be satisfied being a mentor to future brain surgeons instead of making a fool of himself on political matters?

    1. You are right Shaw, the skill set and talents that make one an effective scientist are complete different than the skill set and experience that makes one an effective politician and leader of people.

Anyone's guess is as good as the next as to why Carson made the decision to put himself in the position to look foolish.

  3. Carson first made a political name for himself as the keynote speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast when he decided it would be nice time and place to deliver a conservative screed and rail against Obama & Co. For this, and being a black, conservative, "brain-surgeon," as they call him all the time on FOX, he was immediately seized upon as a potential Presidential candidate.

This is the amount of thought that goes into the support of Republican candidates these days.

  4. OT: Les, how does one explain the k00-k00 nuts who come to your blog, my blog, and other liberal blogs to copy and paste what we write and what our commenters write into conservative blogs under fake names? I do believe, like the extremist TeaPublicans in Congress, that they're all having mental breakdowns. It's not surprising when people spend 7 years shaking their fists at everything they don't understand and hating anyone who isn't part of their tribe. That would cause a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth, as we just witnessed in the House of Reps. by the Republicans who are in disarray after the McCarthy debacle. Those extremist right wing blogs are just a reflection of the roiling confusion and paranoia that haunts the members of that particular tribe.

  5. I think a large part of the problem is that Carson's supporters will not listen to the question, but only listen to the answer. Then, they will say right, we should not increase the budget. The stupid here is not so much with Carson (candidates often don't answer the question) as with his supporters.

  6. My view Shaw is that they are frightened little people who cannot accept our changing societal attitudes about government, religion, race, globalization, the environment, and that they fear, correctly so, that they are losing the political and cultural battles. Their intellectual growth resides somewhere near the 1776 - 1860 era.

As for congress, the tea party and GOP; they are the only hope folks like those who frequent the blogs you refer to have of "taking back their country". And of course they are themselves to some degree reflective of the "koo-koo" nuts of which you speak.

Several years ago a proud conservative/libertarian interested in fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets and paying down the national debt and insuring civil liberties for all I can no longer claim allegiance to the party I once believed represented those principles and values. They no longer do.

    1. "...interested in fiscal responsibility, balanced budgets and paying down the national debt and insuring civil liberties..."

I don't think the republicans were ever really interested in those ideals. They only said they were. Their performance when in power demonstrated they were only empty words never translated into actions.

    2. It has become abundantly clear to me of late that you are indeed correct Jerry. Unfortunately this nation no longer has a principled honest conservative republican party. It cannot be trusted to do the right thin (s).

I am not yet convinced the democratic party is honest either. Basically I do not trust any political party because power is, in my view, all that matters to them.

    3. I trust the democrats more than the republicans, but the republican level is a very low standard to beat. Unfortunately, the big money powers are making big inroads into the Democratic Party also.

  7. "Fiscal responsibility" is a phrase Republicans use to trick people who think there is no difference between their own their own finances and a government's finances. This is why they fear monger about the US being like Greece. Greece gave up the ability to print their own currency when they joined the EU and most of their problems can be blamed on this foolish move. The US retains the ability to print it's own currency.

Democratic fiscal responsibility involves investing in our country to grow the economy and increase prosperity for all. Republican fiscal responsibility involves cutting investments, which results in stagnation and prosperity for the wealthy alone.

  8. Fiscal responsibility means making wise decisions with respect to one's finances. In the case of a nation it means with respect to taxpayer's money (taxes).

It has nothing to do with "trickling people" into anything Dervish. Unless you accept conspiracy theories.

  9. They are "trickling" on all of us. That is no conspiracy, it's reality.
