Lives Matter...

Rational Nation USA
Purveyor of Truth

DNC to vote on acceptance of the following.
WHEREAS, the Democratic Party believes in the American Dream and the promise of liberty and justice for all, and we know that this dream is a nightmare for too many young people stripped of their dignity under the vestiges of slavery, Jim Crow and White Supremacy; and
WHEREAS, we, the Democratic National Committee, have repeatedly called for race and justice – demilitarization of police, ending racial profiling, criminal justice reform, and investments in young people, families, and communities — after Trayvon Martin, after Michael Brown, after Tamir Rice, after Freddie Gray, after Sandra Bland, after Christian Taylor, after too many others lost in the unacceptable epidemic of extrajudicial killings of unarmed black men, women, and children at the hands of police; and
WHEREAS, we hear the “Black lives matter” cry from the inspiration of creators Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza, and from the heart of a generation of young African Americans who feel totally dismissed and unheard as they are crushed between unlawful street violence and unjust police violence; we salute the courageous young people who participate in the #March2Justice, and we repeat the chant “say her name” to acknowledge the Black women whose stories are often untold and whose cases are unresolved; and
WHEREAS, without systemic reform this state of unrest jeopardizes the well-being of our democracy and our nation;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the DNC joins with Americans across the country in affirming “Black lives matter” and the “say her name” efforts to make visible the pain of our fellow and sister Americans as they condemn extrajudicial killings of unarmed African American men, women and children; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the DNC renews our previous calls to action and urges Congress to adopt systemic reforms at state, local, and federal levels to prohibit law enforcement from profiling based on race, nationality, ethnicity, or religion, to minimize the transfer of excess equipment (like the military-grade vehicles and weapons that were used to police peaceful civilians in the streets of Ferguson, Missouri) to federal and state law enforcement; and to support prevention programs that give young people alternatives to incarceration.

To which we respond with an expansion, all lives matter. Politically incorrect perhaps, but true. It is, after all, the 21st century.

Thoughts anyone?

  1. Why do you repeat that awful "all lives matter" line? BLM is a specific movement with a specific message. "All lives matter" is dismissive, redundant, and irrelevant. You should know better than to fall in with that nonsense.

    1. It is my view, it has always been n my view (even before BLM), and it always will be my view. You, anyone else, or everybody can dismiss it as what you say, that be your choice.

No life is irrelevant, unless one chooses to believe so Jersey nor is any life redundant as we are all individuals, unique and with our own potential. No life should be dismissed for they are all important to someone.

I should know better? Perhaps in your perception I should (as I see you wagging your finger ar me), but I am simply smiling, as you lecture me with your air of superiority.

It is refreshing, the morning air. Help one to think clearly. Have a great weekend Jersey, it promises to be a great one and what one makes of it matters. To someone.

    2. Black people are treated terribly compared to white people, as if their lives do not matter. Hence this BLM thing. In what context, exactly, do "all lives matter," Les? Are whites being mistreated? Disproportionately shot or thrown in jail?

I'm not wagging my finger. Just asking you try a little empathy.

    3. More whites are killed overall by cops.

When we look at "disproportional", more Native Americans are killed relative to population than other groups... even blacks.

It is most rational to look at the entire picture of police killings and brutality... regardless of race.

  2. Still up to my tentacles in boxes and bubble wrap, moving to a new residence. Nevertheless, here is a quick comment for consideration.

It is not the slogans “Black Lives Matter” versus “All Lives Matter” that is the issue here; rather the background motive behind the re-parsing. It is the kind of revisionism undertaken by partisan hacks when they seek to de-legitimize the claims and aspirations of a people whom they don’t like. In this instance – reading between the lines -- what the revised phrase really means is “Suck It Up” and “In Your Face!” Their purpose is to create a distraction and divert attention away from any meaningful debate on the subject. It is easy to miss this point when a revised phrase has the appearances of making a moral statement. In fact, it doesn't.

In response to the TV shooting in Virginia last week, Denesh D-Souza twittered jokes about the murders. How crude and reprehensible! These people don’t really care about whether or not any life matters; all they care about is their partisan potshot de jour and their appeals to ugly nativism.

  3. 1) Nativism is indeed very ugly.
    2) "All Lives Matter" is beautiful, and anything but nonsense.

    1. No, "all lives matter" in this context is dismissive and disrespectful. You guys are just utterly clueless on this one.

  4. The motto "black lives matter" is inseparable from the context of the specific issue it was advanced to address -- the casual killing of black people, especially by police who often get away with it.

The implication of the motto is not "black lives matter more than others" but "black lives matter just as much as others".

In any other context, "all lives matter" would not be offensive. In this context, it's offensive because it's an attempt to change the subject and de-emphasize the problem that "black lives matter" refers to.

  5. Even black people strongly prefer "all lives matter".

No, we are not clueless here.

    1. Rasmussen asked the question that gave them the answer they wanted. Notice that they did NOT ask "do you support the Black Lives Matter movement". I suspect there would have been a lot of overlap. The two aren't mutually exclusive. IMO dmarks is totally clueless in regards to Black Lives Matter.

  6. Infidel: if BLM is inseparable from police killings
of blacks as you say, how do you explain them getting involved in business quotas?

Not so "inseparable" at all, if the movement itself has moved on from police killings.

  7. Anyone who believes that all live do not matter, or that some live matter more than other lives matter or that everyone does not initially deserve the same respect and it is only theirs to lose, then yes they are clueless, or worse.

In the that context all lives matter is meaningful and it is how I've tried to live my personal and business life.

  9. I'm with dmarks in saying "all lives matter" isn't nonsense. It's an effort to shut down the Black Lives Matter movement brought to us courtesy of white racists who support the status quo... which is country where a Black person is 300 percent more likely to be killed by the police than a white person.

Rasmussen asked a leading question and got the response they were looking for. Notice that they did not ask respondents if they also support the BLM movement. I strongly suspect that, if they had, they would have found a lot of overlap and that the result wouldn't (seemingly) be that 69 percent of African Americans disagree with "black lives matter". The two aren't mutually exclusive. Which is why I believe that the 31 percent of African Americans who said "Black lives matter" is is closest to their own views weren't fooled by Rasmussen's leading question.

I know I wasn't. Although the statement "all lives matter" is closest to my own views, I would have answered "black lives matter" was... because I would have refused to allow Rasmussen to manipulate me into giving an answer designed to discredit the BLM movement.

Glenn Beck just held an "all lives matter march" of 20k people in Alabama. Obviously he too thinks shutting down the BLM movement with the White/racist and/or clueless counter-slogan "all lives matter" is "beautiful".

BTW, I am NOT saying that "all lives matter" is racist. What's racist is when people use "all lives matter" in an attempt to shut down the BLM movement. The Rightwing-o-sphere is going crazy in response to the Rasmussen survey. From Beck to Breitbart, they are all quoting it... and using it to shut down the BLM movement and say it's "racist" because BLM is saying ONLY black lives matter (which THEY ARE NOT).

So, in regards to Jersey saying "You guys are just utterly clueless on this one"... I agree. That does appear to be the case.

In some folks minds anyone who doesn't walk in lockstep with the progressive's world is considered clueless.
