Should Illegal Immigrants (or undocumented immigrants in PC speak) be Afforded the Right to Vote?...

Rational Nation USA
Purveyor of Truth

We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here does in good faith become an American and assimilates himself to us he shall be treated on an exact equality with every one else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed or birth-place or origin.

But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American and nothing but an American. If he tries to keep segregated with men of his own origin and separated from the rest of America, then he isn’t doing his part as an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. . . We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality, and not as dwellers in a polyglot boarding-house; and we have room for but one soul loyalty, and that is loyalty to the American people.

There are those who think surveys are fleeting and really don't accurately reflect political reality. This may or may not be so. But they do reflect attitudes and changing attitudes over time result in policy decisions that affect the nation. The following Rasmussen Survey, if even close to accurate is deeply troubling. Troubling for what this site believes are obvious reasons. We hope the survey is but a political tool whose purpose it is to stir right wing angst in order to insure conservative congressional domination. For this reason we are especially interested in our liberal/progressive readerships viewpoint on this subject.

Are voters ready to let illegal immigrants vote? A sizable number, including most Democrats, are.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that one-out-of-three Likely U.S. Voters (35%) now believes that illegal immigrants should be allowed to vote if they can prove they live in this country and pay taxes. Sixty percent (60%) disagree, while five percent (5%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Fifty-three percent (53%) of Democrats think tax-paying illegal immigrants should have the right to vote. Twenty-one percent (21%) of Republicans and 30% of voters not affiliated with either major political party agree.

  1. I do disagree with TR's statement: "We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language"

For one, it goes against the Bill of Rights. For another, it alienates those those speaking languages such as Spanish and scores of Native American languages.... all of which were spoken in the territory of the US long before English was.

  2. dmarks... I understand folks who want people here to speak english. It can be frustrating watching the government spend money to print all sorts of documents and what not in other languages. Maybe this is a good example of our exceptionalism, maybe not.

But there are some new stats out that will be tough for the more xenophobic folks to grasp and accept. At least in regards to spanish, a frequent bogeyman for official language folks, recent stats show a real increase since 2000 in first generation spanish speakers learning and speaking english. The number is now 89%, compared with 72% in 1980. In the population at large, the number is now at 68% as opposed to 59% in 2000.

English first believers should be trumpeting these figures. They are good and show real assimilation, the very thing they call for.

    But they won't.

    1. Dave: Those figures show that there is no need for any sort of harsh "English Only" censorship: given those trends. the number of "first generation Spanish speakers" who don't speak English will be but a tiny minority soon.

I personally think that education is the best path.

    2. Indeed education offers the best path and personally I would support Spanish being taught as a second language beginning in 1'st grade through middle school. Third languages could be taught as an elective in high school and beyond.

  3. So you disagree with the current requirement to read, write, and speak English to become a citizen?

    1. Jerry: I would say I disagree. There are Native Americans (American Indians) who don't speak English right now. Should they be deported for not meeting this would-be citizenship requirement? I don't think so.

    2. Who said anything about deportation? I was talking about the requirements for citizenship. Don't move the goalposts.
