Confidence in America's Leaders Continue to Fall...

As the nation continues to flounder Gallop's recent poll highlights just how out of touch our government officials are with the people they were elected to represent and govern. It doesn't take a genius to figure out Americans want solutions and they want their leaders to act in their and the nation's best interests as a whole.

Americans' confidence in all three branches of the U.S. government has fallen, reaching record lows for the Supreme Court (30%) and Congress (7%), and a six-year low for the presidency (29%). The presidency had the largest drop of the three branches this year, down seven percentage points from its previous rating of 36%.

We know there is a problem, the question is will we do something about it?

  1. Given the negative feelings about most all of our institutions, it makes you wonder whether we
    are perceptive or cynical .

  2. Interesting observation/question.

Cynicism no doubt plays a large factor in this.

The real challenge? Identify the drivers of cynicism and mitigate their effect by positive actions that produces positive results. But first our priorities must change and compromise must be an option.

My opinion is there are a lot of perceptive people who have become cynical over time. But ot is just my opinion based on observable trends.

  3. We keep saying that we hate Congress and the polls seem to reflect that. So, then why do we keep on electing the same old bozos?

  4. Americans' confidence in the presidency and Congress has fallen due to Republican obstruction. Most people simply don't realize what the problem is (the Repubs). We need to elect more Dems (the more liberal the better). Although I'm sure several commenters here will disagree. That is my genuine opinion and I'm sticking to it.

  5. I agree that the Congress has been next to useless over the past 5 years, and yes republicans have had the majority since 2010. Changes are desperately needed.

I disagree with electing more dems and the more liberal the better. This is not BECAUAE I disagree will ALL liberal positions, rather I disagree with extremes and following in lock step with any ideology.

Having said, my position is we need to elect THINKING people to office that can see BOTH sides of and issue and make the rational decision. In other words compromise when neccessary.

In addition to the above, we do not need, nor should we desire more power flowing to the president, whether they be democrat or republican, or any other party for that matter.

  6. Two comments; one an absolutist and partisan one that's totally lacking in perspective, the other a measured, nuance, and nonpartisan one. Gee, I wonder which one of these 2 missives that I'm ultimately going to side with.

  7. "Pffft" is my response to the individual who asked the rhetorical question. I don't agree with the notion held by some that political gridlock is desirable. Anyway, even though more Dems would be my preference, If more rational Republicans were elected I think that would be an improvement. Problem is, given the fact that the ideologues come out for the primaries while ordinary voters stay home (in general), I think the gridlock is likely to get worse.

  8. Most, if not all rational people would agree gridlock in government is undesirable. That being said, uniformity of opinion and total agreement has never been nor will it ever be reality.

Compromise or revolution are the only two realistic options in my mind. Compromise being the preferable unless our liberties are indeed threatened. We are are not in danger of that yet, however the Patriot Act, NSA, and some recent SCOTUS decisions are bringing us closer to that possibly becoming reality.

  9. Most people that I come into contact with have a mixture of liberal, conservative, and moderate positions and few if any ever order the blue-plate special. It is only in the hyper-partisan world of the blogsophere, talk-radio, cable news lunacy, and unfortunately Congress (Gohmert, Pelosi, Bachman, and Wasserman-Schultz - rotsa ruck getting a compromise out of those 4 idiots) that you get these orthodox train-wrecks. Yeah, I kinda agree that there's going to be additional gridlock.

  10. People who are into blogging also exist in the world where the commenter who hates "blue plate specials" spends most of his time. I suspect he simply has not quizzed that many people. He must have come into contact with some. In any case I reject the "blue plate special" putdown. I just posted a comment in agreement with RN on his "ominous NSA" post.
