Big Money Liberal Mega-Donors and Their Dilemma...

I find the following article fascinating. However given the tendency to class warfare not at all surprising. From POLITICO it is a must read. Some good stuff and more not so good stuff. Our informed and educated voting public should take these things seriously and act to force real change. Given the state of present day America it is questionable if much, or even anything, will change. Too many people are just going along for the ride , too busy or ambivalent to care.

David Brock has a message for liberal millionaires: Don’t sweat being called hypocrites.

Brock, a former “right-wing hit-man”-turned-top-big-money-Democratic-operative, is part of a behind-the-scenes campaign to convince donors it’s OK to attack the Koch brothers for spending millions of dollars while doing the exact same thing for the left.

“You’re not in this room today trying to figure out how to rig the game so you can be free to make money poisoning little kids, and neither am I,” Brock told donors this month at a conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico, according to someone who attended the conference, but who declined to be identified because it was closed to the press.

“Subscribing to a false moral equivalence is giving the Kochs exactly what they want: keeping us quiet about what they’re doing to destroy the very fabric of our nation,” added Brock, whose deep-pocketed nonprofit groups are leading the charge to make the conservative megadonors Charles and David Koch an issue in the 2014 midterms.

Conservatives reject the notion that rich liberals donate more out of their concern for society than do their conservative counterparts like the Kochs. But Brock’s pitch also isn’t sitting well with some major liberal donors and operatives, who worry the anti-Koch strategy could backfire big time. It has not yet been proven effective at motivating key Democratic voting blocs like unmarried women and minorities, and liberal critics also worry it risks undercutting more important issues, smacks of class warfare and opens themselves up to hypocrisy charges.

“The Democrats’ problem is off-year turnout, and I’m not clear how emphasizing the Koch brothers gets more black and brown folks to the polls,” said Steve Phillips, a member of the secretive Democracy Alliance club of major liberal donors. “My sense for voters of color is that the issues of income inequality, housing, education, immigration reform, health care and criminal justice reform would resonate more.

So while big-money liberals scramble to match the unprecedented money plans being methodically prosecuted by Koch brothers’ political operation, they’re also grappling with more fundamental strategic questions — are we really that different from the Kochs and do voters really care?

Interesting stuff, and if voters really did care they would educate themselves, become involved in the political process at the local, state, and the national level. Voter turnout would likely increase to perhaps 75 - 85 percent, and the politicians might actually begin to put We the People and our interests ahead of their own and their mega-buck donors. We might just see some REAL campaign finance reform as well.

    1. I get it just fine. I'm just saying that given the choice - the reality of the situation - I'll take a rich person who cares about their fellow Americans over a rich person who cares only about themselves.

    2. Jersey, driving class warfare, from either side or any angle is not going to fix the problem that most thinking people realize exists. Money and special interest influence in politics/government.

I do realize some liberals are a-okay with both, just like libertarians, republicans, and TP types. It has corrupted our system yet the general populace seems okay with it.

    3. Les, you can try that sort of bait 'n switch on someone with a lower IQ, but it's not going to work on me. The people who point out class warfare are not the drivers of it. It's the same spurious logic that says "you are not tolerant of your are not tolerant of intolerance." Sleaze Logic.

Given the realities of the situation, it sustains my faith in humanity to know that some rich people actually care about those not so lucky.

    4. Nope, no bait and switch here. Just calling em as I see em and as they really exist. Partisan blinders of course preclude one from recognizing it. On both sides of the great divide in politics I must add.

    5. What "really exist(s)," Les? "Recognizing" what?

You are basing your silly and rather immature notion on the premise that Democrats and Liberals are anti-rich. That is your error. If you knew better, you'd know what you are saying is specious at best.

    6. The rich people who care about those less lucky show it by directly helping those less lucky.

Not by supporting failed policies that pay lip service to helping the poor but end up being wealthy bureaucrats getting fatter.

  3. I've always been leery of people who pull 180s, whether it's David Horowitz (left to right) or this fellow (right to left). It just seems as if they're substituting one set of blinders for another.

  4. Brock is now blinded by the left. And the racism described (or pushed) by Phillips is creepy.

RN, I am now fully on board with taxing the efforts of the Koch's. Who do what they do no less than liberal millionaires "because they care about their fellow Americans". Which might be very little at all.

  5. I'm in agreement with Jersey (mostly). Until the system is changed it would be stupid for Democrats to unilaterally disarm. I see no hypocrisy at all.

    1. ... and changing the corrupt system to eliminate the influence of mega donors, whether they be Koch, Soros, Brock, or any special interest group(s) is ,of course, the real point here. Isn't it?

    2. Maybe we could start by getting rid of the tax-exempt status for all of these miserable bastards (the 501 c 3s); Brock, Rove, etc. and save that privilege strictly for people who do, you know, ACTUAL charity. That might help.

    3. Hear hear, I am on board with this.

  6. I am in agreement as well. Although the two "agreements" that follow RN's would not eliminate the influence of megadonors at all. I'm sure they'd still be willing to poor in millions to corrupt the process... even without a tax-exempt status.

  7. "poor" or pour DS? I'm just want to be clear on this.

  8. Oh no you caught him in a typo. Now he will defend it in dozens of comments for years.

Anyway, RN. There seems to be a some consensus so far.

  9. As a person who makes his share of typos I certainly understand those things can happen and would never hold it against anyone.

Did you notice mine? I'm when it should be I?

Hope DS won't hold my good natured chiding against me :-)
