America, Living In the Twilght Zone...

In a nation where any and everything goes the drama by Wisconsin democratic candidate for governor Brett Hulsey is NOT at all surprising.

Sometimes theatrics serves a valuable purpose. Sometimes not.

Candidate Hulsey's approach may have a positive effect. We'll never know unless somebody tries it, right?

What is interesting troubling is that in the 21st century America apparently is incapable of having the honest dialogue that might move our nation forward forward to a place where discussion is no longer necessary.

More likely than not the fringe elements will continue to fester and grow. Because in the USA it seems more and more each day that is what we do.

Did I mention Hulsey is a democrat?

MADISON, Wis. - Democratic candidate for governor Brett Hulsey plans to hand out white Ku Klux Klan-style hoods to Wisconsin Republicans as they gather for their annual convention Friday to highlight what he says are their racist policies.

Hulsey, a state representative from Madison who is white, came into the state Capitol press room on Thursday to show off a hood he says he made with his daughter's sewing machine using curtain material he purchased for $1.

"It's a Wisconsin Republican Party hat," Hulsey said. "And people can interpret it any way they want."

When asked whether he was serious, trying to be funny or provocative, Hulsey answered: "All of the above."

Hulsey, a two-term state representative, is running a long-shot campaign for the Democratic nomination against the better-funded and more broadly supported candidate Mary Burke. She is a former state commerce secretary and Trek Bicycle Corp. executive. Her campaign spokesman Joe Zepecki called Hulsey's latest stunt "completely unacceptable and totally inappropriate."

Hulsey has a history of outlandish behavior.

Hulsey contemplated bringing a musket onto the Assembly floor to call attention to GOP policies, like legalizing carrying concealed weapons, that he opposed. Last year, one of his legislative staffers told police she feared for her safety because he brought a box-cutter to the office.

In 2012, Hulsey pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct citation after police accused him of flipping a 9-year-old boy off an inner tube at a Madison beach and taking pictures of the child. Hulsey told police he just walked by the boy and didn't "touch or molest him." He also said he needed to point his camera toward the boy in order to get a shot of a sailboat and the sunset.

It sometimes we are living in the Twilight Zone. Doesn't it?

  1. Its kind of like your last post, about Aristotle and virtue...

Maybe our politicians are just playing to the crowd and they represent not their own lack of virtues but ours as a society...maybe its not our politicians that are the problem but us (as individuals, groups, and a society).

    1. Perhaps Tao. You are saying our politicians, and by extensioon our dysfunctional government are merely reflections of ourselves.

Interesting thought. Rather than the leaders shaping our politics and government we are shaping our leaders to give us what we want. Divisiveness, turmoil, and absurdity?

Politics and governance by competing special interests.

  2. I know Wisconsin has a pretty ugly history with the Klan, so maybe this guy is making a more serious point than we realize, but it seems pretty kooky.

  3. Wisconsin politics have grown weird as of late. Uber liberal Madison and uber conservative outstate seem to bring out the oddballs. The state was the birthplace of the GOP, sort of an extreme move at the time, and produced the populist hero
Bob LaFollette and the acerbic William Proxmire. When I grew up there, we had Joe McCarthy: perhaps explains why 'America's Dairyland' continues to amuse us?

  4. I have family in Wisconsin. Hard core democrats. The kind that all it tales is a "D" behind a candidates name to get their vote. Issues are but a distraction.

So it goes in America's heartland. Perhaps everywhere. No?

    1. I have family in Wisconsin as well. It has gotten so that holiday get togethers, political discussions are verboten. IMO, it started with the union busting and guns everywhere crowd taking 50% approval as a huge mandate.

  5. So Les, do you think that if these folks in Wisconsin really studied the issues, they would find GOP candidates to vote for?

Usually people are "hardcore" for one party or the other because they are more liberal or conservative in their thinking. As well, the party system we have does kind of force people to one or the other. I'm sure if there was a viable alternate, your hardcore Democratic family members would at least give it a chance. Republicans are rarely an alternative for a liberal minded voter these days.

    1. Perhaps some would, perhaps some wouldn't. Don't know, Don't really concern myself much with it. I do know that there are people both conservative and liberal that vote the party tag without ever giving serious thought to the issues.

I'm sure there are capable good republicans and capable good democrats in Wisconsin. This guy is, as you say, kooky. Even given his kookiness I posted this because I see his point.

    2. Yes, he is kooky. Most of them seem to be, perhaps when the WI-GOP stops eating their own , decency may attempt a return?

    3. Well, if you are liberal or conservative, you really have only two choices. We don't have a viable alternative. And it's more than just a label. Democrats and Republicans tend to govern and legislate along party lines, and the Democrats have a more liberal line than the GOP. Frankly, you have to be an idiot to vote for a GOP candidate if you are liberal. There are no liberal republicans left out there.

  9. It's also kind of ironic that a lot of the early progressives in the U.S. and Britain (Woodrow Wilson, John Maynard Keynes, H.L. Mencken, Margaret Sanger, Teddy Roosevelt, H.G. Wells, etc.) were exceedingly racist, too.
