Happy Thanksgiving!!!

As we gather with family and friends to celebrate our National Holiday Rational Nation USA wishes all it's readership, whether they be liberal, conservative, libertarian, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Atheist or whatever the very best of Thanksgivings and humbly asks that all remember how truly fortunate we are to live in a land where freedom of political and religious speech is allowed.

It is I think appropriate on this day to post George Washington's 1789 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation. Whether one is religious and believes in one supreme being or not Thanksgiving personifies the importance of being thankful for all we have achieved as a nation and if the USA returns to, and holds true to the principles of The Age of Reason and the Enlightenment we will be fine for another 224 years.

To all you extreme partisans and zealots I say, THINK ABOUT IT.

Happy Thanksgiving All!!!

Thanksgiving Proclamation

Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Go. Washington

  4. Thanks Will. Very same to you and yours as well.

  5. Les, are you acknowledging the providence of Almighty God and obeying His will?

  6. You're cute DS. I am as you know an atheist. However, I acknowledge there are millions upon millions who do and are to some degree guided by their belief in an Almighty. I respect that as long as they respect mine to believe as I choose.

I do hope this explanation suffices DS because there will be no further clarification.

    Now, Happy Thanksgiving.

  7. Yes, RN... your " I respect that as long as they respect mine to believe as I choose." lack of authoritarianism does not sit right with the religious right, nor with the economic collectivists of the Left.

  8. Sadly dmarks what you said is too often true. Unfortunately it is also true with respect to the collectivists on the right.

    1. Thanks. I believe I did touch some on authoritarianism that comes from the right.

    2. The Ryan budget increases Federal spending by 40% over the next 11 years and at an even higher rate for the MIC. Yeah, there's definitely enough collectivism to go around here.

    3. Yes, the Ryan budget, which includes massive increases in spending (including social spending) is the complete opposite of Darwinism. This is based on the actual figures of the budget. Will, you have already done the analysis on this. There is a problem of the rulers stealing from the people to for waste spending. The Dems/left do it in a very irresponsible fashion. The Republicans/right only slightly less so.

  9. Yeah... kind of crazy to call Ryan any kind of cutter, let alone some sort of hardline social darwinist, Objectivist, etc.. I never forget checking when the Left accused Newt Gingrich of wanting to cut Medicare... turned out his specific budget called for a massive 20% increase. Not as much as the Dems wanted to increase it, but a strong, massive increase anyway.

    1. Yeah, Mr. Obama referring to the Ryan Budget as "thinly veiled Social Darwinism" was totally absurd and one of the major reasons why I no longer respect the fellow who I voted (with some degree of enthusiasm) for in 2008.

    2. "Mr. Obama referring to the Ryan Budget as "thinly veiled Social Darwinism"

Only if by "veil" he means a piece of cloth 18' thick that weights 3 tons...

I was not aware that he said this. It's just another one of his bald-faced lies, really.

    3. The Ryan Budget was "thinly veiled Social Darwinism". That was a completely factual statement. There is something called inflation, you know (spending has to increase just to keep pace with it). Also, the economy and population are growing, and more baby boomers are retiring. You also need to look at where the money is being spent, of course. Or not. you could just look at the grand total and disregard all that other BS... if your desire is to keep the wool pulled over your eyes.

BTW, I do support Les' right to not believe in God. I frankly have no idea what dmarks means when he says "economic collectivists" have a problem with anyone's non-belief.

  10. It does give one a glimpse into the mind of a pure altruist doesn't it Will? What is disconcerting is the democratic establismint jumped on board and the die hards still support the insanity wholeheartrdly.

Whatever happened to Classical Liberalism, the real deal?

  11. It exists but you have to go to Rand, CATO, Mises, AEI, Mercatus, FFF (Future of Freedom Foundation), Econlib, etc.. Capitol Hill, not so much.

  12. Glad you set the record straight on who started the national custom of celebrating Thanksgiving, Les.

Some leftist jerk in the enemedia asserted that it was FDR, wouldn't you know?

FDR was merely responsible for moving the date back a week from its original calendar location to accommodate clamoring merchants during the Depression, who claimed the shopping season was too short to enable them to make a profit as things stood.

As far as I know, this was the only friendly gesture FDR (i.e. Effin' Dirty Rat) ever made towards Business during his seemingly endless administration. Tragic that it took World War Two to pull us out of the Depression.

Heaven only knows what might pull our chestnuts out of the fire now. It looks like we're sunk. Those who might possibly help are given no credence and get no support -- even from their own party establishment, which of course is hopelessly corrupt or inept -- I'm never sure which -- probably both.

Nevertheless, I had a nice day yesterday. I hope you did too?

  13. From The Heritage Foundation's website:

Following a resolution of Congress, President George Washington proclaimed Thursday the 26th of November 1789 a day of “public thanksgiving and prayer” devoted to “the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.” Reflecting American religious practice, Presidents and Congresses from the beginning of the republic have from time to time designated days of fasting and thanksgiving (the Thanksgiving holiday we continue to celebrate in November was established by Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and made into law by Congress in 1941).
