Is it just me or does anybody else think these two guys are flakes?

TPM - According to Rep. Steve King's (R-IA) math, legalizing undocumented immigrants is untenable because for every valedictorian DREAMer -- immigrants brought to the U.S. as children -- there are 100 more who are carrying drugs across the border.

"Some of them are valedictorians, and their parents brought them in," King told Newsmax in an interview last week. "It wasn't their fault. It's true in some cases, but they aren't all valedictorians. They weren't all brought in by their parents."

"For everyone who's a valedictorian, there's another 100 out there that weigh 130 pounds and they’ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert,” he continued. “Those people would be legalized with the same act."

So, Representative King, where's the supporting proof behind your statement? Inquiring minds want to know.

  1. I place him right up there with Gohmert and Bachmann in terms of Republican crazies and, yeah, I'm pretty sure that his "numbers" are a wee-bit off.

  2. I'm sure whatever nugget of truth is in there applies to native-born Americans too in some general way... but you won't find this hypocrite demanding that we deport native-born Americans.

Yeah, the Pat Buchanan wing of the Republicans, with its hatred of immigrants, is truly awful.

  3. I will say up front that I support bringing out of the shadows the people who are here illegally. This is a human rights issue first and foremost.

Citizenship is a separate issue. Less than half of those given amnesty by Reagan became US citizens. The majority were satisfied with permanent residency, the ability to work and own property here, and to travel freely to and from their native country. This is the status Americans get who choose to live in a Latin American country.

Anecdotal evidence and some sketchy polling suggests today's cohort is no different.

The essential problem we face today is, because these people came here under the radar, we have no way of verifying many essential details, such as when they got here or who they are.

This opens up the system to fraud, including adults arriving yesterday and claiming they were brought here as children. Also keep in mind that illegal immigration is propped up by a robust counterfeit document industry. Anything can be faked and 'proven.'

For this reason. I would like to see a general 5-year amnesty, where anybody who pokes his or her head up gets a 5-year entry/exit visa. Period. This brings these human beings out of the shadows and short-circuits much of the employer abuse.

Set a date and declare it. Anyone trying after that date has no standing and will be deported.

During that 5-year period, people can seek to normalize their status to some permanent end.

Because of the ambiguity of who someone is and when they got here, I am against citizenship for all but the most airtight provable cases.

I do support permanent residency for those with a clean record who are working and contributing to society.

Our government has proven it is no good at securing the borders or tracking who comes and goes. It is terrible at determining which visa and citizenship applicants are the good ones and which are the bad ones.

Our stupid feral government gave refugee status to the Boston bombers' family, and they went back and vacationed in the country they claimed they were escaping because they feared for their lives.

I want us to welcome immigrants, even many of the ones who came here illegally, but I have zero confidence in out stupid, morbidly obese, Jabba the Hutt, soulless monster of a government's ability to not totally %#*& it up.

  4. Unless you are Native American, we are all offspring of immigrants, many illegal. Most never got citizenship, but their children were automatically American, if they were born here, even though their parents were not citizens. Immigrants are the life blood of this country, without which we would not be who we are. The first immigrants were white, and then killed and committed genocide against the Native Americans. Most of the capitalistic barons that built American wealth and power, were not American born. Then, of course, there is the pesky issue of slavery. On the backs of enslaved people America became wealthy and powerful throughout the world. I laugh at the elitist idea that we must now become a closed nation, or that a path to citizenship must take 13 years, while they pay taxes, yet, get nothing from the government. Soon America will not be a white majority nation, and I look forward to more reasonable viewpoints on immigration. It's a fun irony that the Native Americans we killed and imprisoned on reservations now are getting rich off the white mans "superior?" character. Mexican border (illegal) crossings are at their lowest point in 100 years, yet Republicans claim it is the problem destroying America. Their hypocritical hyperbole is at least consistent.

  5. Tonto?!?!?!

Please tell us why you wear a crow on your head.

"Unless you are Native American, we are all offspring of immigrants, many illegal."

Wrong, Mr Fake-History_Breath. The Native Americans are descended from earlier immigrants... that's all. And there were waves of them: rest asssured that all but the first small wave of immigrants from the Siberia direction were considered to be illegal by those whose territory they moved into.

But maybe that dead crow on your head is teaching you something, you aren't a complete bird brain. You did make some good points.

  6. "On the backs of enslaved people America became wealthy and powerful throughout the world."

Wrong. Slavery was the south's downfall. Put them far behind the much more industrious and industrial north.

  7. Correct, completely, Silverfiddle. Yeah, that was one point where Tonto was quite birdbrained also. Slavery had nothing to do with the North... and America's global importance happened after the 1860's.

I do agree with him on the immigration point. It is not destroying America. Not at all. The left is similar with hypocritical hyperbole against free and fair trade.
