Liberty -vs- Tyranny

The headline and the text below is self sufficient. The ball is again in your court liberals.

AFRICAN AMERICAN NEWS -
Cosby, an outspoken voice on cultural issues, says the recent trial did not prove that Zimmerman had racist motives at any point during his confrontation with Martin. That means race shouldn't be a part of the conversation regarding the case.

"Let's not go into a racial discussion unless we really have something there," he told radio hosts Domenick Nati and Nate Foutz.

Cosby also blasted the news media and said that he had stopped paying attention to "high-profile" court cases after the Casey Anthony murder trial because journalists were so convinced she would be found guilty and yet she was not....

Regarding the Zimmerman trial, Cosby said that he did not think the state of Florida was able to prove its case against him. "I found that the prosecution did not tell the story well. And they lost," Cosby said.

Outspoken former NBA superstar Charles Barkley said he agrees with the verdict in the murder trial of George Zimmerman, but blasted the media for giving platforms to racists to "vent" their ignorance.

Barkley, 50, gave his assessment on the high-profile Florida murder trial to CNBC on Thursday, saying jurors simply did not have enough evidence to convict the former neighborhood watch volunteer in the 2012 killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

"Well I agree with the verdict," Barkley said. "I feel sorry that young kid got killed, but they didn't have enough evidence to charge him. Something clearly went wrong that night -- clearly something went wrong -- and I feel bad for anybody who loses a kid, but if you looked at the case and you don't make it -- there was some racial profiling, no question about it -- but something happened that changed the dynamic of that night."

Barkley recognized his take is "probably not a popular opinion among most people," but said the evidence pointed to an acquittal.

"I just feel bad because I don't like when race gets out in the media 'cuz I don't think the media has a 'pure heart,' as I call it," Barkley continued. "There are very few people who have a pure heart when it comes to race. Racism is wrong in any shape [or] form -- there are a lot of black people who are racist, too. I think sometimes when people talk about race, they act like only white people are racist. There are a lot of black people who are racist. And I don't like when it gets out there in the media because I don't think the media has clean hands."

Barkley, originally of Alabama, was named one of the NBA's all-time 50 greatest players in 1993, the same year he won the league's Most Valuable Player award. The 11-time All-Star retired after the 1999-2000 season and then began a successful career as a basketball analyst for Turner Network Television. He has also flirted with the idea of entering politics, announcing in 2008 that he intended to run for governor of Alabama before later changing his mind.

"Like I said, I feel sorry that young kid got killed, but just judging by the evidence, I don't think that guy should've went to jail for the rest of his life," Barkley continued. "Mr. Zimmerman was wrong to pursue, he was racial profiling, but I think Trayvon Martin -- God rest his soul -- I think he did flip the switch and started beating the hell out of Mr. Zimmerman. But it was just a bad situation."

Barkley then took aim at unnamed media personalities who allegedly allowed their own biases to show throughout coverage of the murder trial.

"The main thing I feel bad for is it gives every white person and black person who's racist a platform to vent their ignorance," he said. "That's the thing that bothered me the most. I watched this trail closely and I watched these people on television talking about it. A lot of these people have a hidden agenda. They want to have their racist views, whether they are white or black ... Their biases definitely come out. It was a bad situation. We all lost."

  1. Trent Copeland, an exceedingly brilliant African-American attorney, also agrees with the verdict, and he even goes as far as to say that Zimmerman is probably innocent.

    2. Liberals and Progressives should believe everything Bill Cosby and friggin' Charles Lunatic Barkley (of all people!) say?

And just who are all these people accusing Zimmerman of being a racist?

I followed the trial a bit, and watched a variety of news coverage. I saw the subject of racism in a couple of contexts brought up a couple of times here or there, but no widespread accusations from Progressives or Liberals.

This is just more silly victim-mentality whining from the Right. I don't know why you allowed yourself to get sucked into that, Les.

Just like me, and Charles Barkley, and Bill Cosby, I believe, you agreed that Zimmerman was culpable to some extent, that he was over-charged, and so the verdict was understandable. It's all well and fine to agree with that. It is willfully ignorant to pretend that's all there is to this story.

It's also understandable to wonder if Zimmerman would never have followed Martin if Martin was a white kid. You certainly must find that wonder at least understandable, even if probably not provable in federal court.

And isn't it understandable for a family to be upset when their local police force simply ignores the shooting of their unarmed - walking home on the phone with a bag of skittles for his little brother - 17 year old child? Do you not believe African Americans are generally treated poorer than whites by the justice system? Do you really not believe that?

This case did bring out a couple of race issues Americans should be talking about. We can hold our fingers in our ears and shout out the preamble to the Constitution like conservatives, or we could at the very least just acknowledge these issues.

And Silver, below, says the funniest thing. How the hell am I part of this problem? Please explain that. I'm not the moron who advocates stupid pandering laws like Stand Your Stupidity, and has helped to create a society full of morons packing heat everywhere. How the &^%$#!@#$%^&^%$#@!@#$$^^ am I a part of that *&^%$#@!@#$%^&*&^ problem? LOL!!!

Me sucked in jmj? With all due respect, coming from you that is indeed laughable.

"... I believe, you agreed that Zimmerman was culpable to some extent, that he was over-charged, and so the verdict was understandable. ..."

Yep, you are correct. The DA screwed up and the man is off, free. For now. However, I stand by my position that the case is not at it's core about race or profiling. if that make me a racist it makes many of Martins own race the same then.

Were I a blind choir member of the "Zimmerman is innocent and it's all Martin's fault he got killed, after all Zimmerman was only acting in self defense" chorus do you really think I would have arrived at the conclusions I did.

IMNHO, as well as that of others, many on the left, and the race hustlers like Sharpton and Jackson et all are playing the race card for nefarious and dishonorable reasons. POWER POLITICS., and far too many fall for it.

    4. Jersey,

Since the heat and light has shifted to this post, I will repost a comment of mine from yesterday...

What I want is for those opposed to Stand your Ground laws, or who want them changed, to break it down for us. Right now it's just platitudinous twaddle that makes illiberal liberals like Jersey feel all warm inside.

Our right to self-defense stems from our natural right to life, liberty and property.

I ask you to consider the situation where some dummy starts crap with the wrong person, and then ends up getting his ass beat, and not just fists, but dogpiled by the guys friends, taking a real grave bodily injury beating.

Must he just take it because he started it?

Where I don't want to see us end up is in horrible situations such as in England where a homeowner is prosecuted because he shot intruders who were armed only with clubs. If someone is breaking into my house in the dark of night, I don't have the time or the luxury to do a comparison weapons check to be sure there is a proportionality of force.

I realize the stand your ground opposition it mostly to cases outside the home, so consider this. You are walking with your wife late at night, concealed carry. A creep jumps out and sticks something pointy to your throat. You pull you pistol and shoot him dead.

The police arrive and determine he only had a screwdriver, and they note you and your wife were not against a wall or trapped in a corner. You were in a wide-open park, for Lilith's sake! You could have retreated, but you didn't. You shot the guy, a poor kid, only 16 years old...

That's where I stand. What say you?

  4. Neither Cosby nor Barkley are defense attorneys. Their opinions are just that, more opinions in this controversial case, but not informed by an inside view of criminal justice in this country. This man's opinion, OTOH, carries more weight, since he was a Zimmerman defense attorney, who defended the verdict, but had this to say:

One criminal defense attorney who defended the Trayvon Martin verdict was pretty good about acknowledging the role of race in the Trayvon Martin case—Mark Geragos:

Did the George Zimmerman trial involve racist attitudes? Of course it did. Did the predominantly white jury reach the right verdict? Of course it did. Is the criminal justice system a racist institution? Of course it is. Do young black males disproportionately suffer the brunt of this criminal justice system? Of course they do. Did the media and politicians inflame the situation for their own purposes? Of course they did. Is this a conundrum easily resolved or reconciled? Of course it’s not.

This guy actually knows what he's talking about vis-a-vis race and the criminal justice system.

    I believe him.

    1. I agree that the criminal justice system is often unfair to young black kids but to plant your flag on this case is just plain stupid in that there was reasonable doubt written all over the sucker.......And Greta van Susteren did a walk-through (with cameras) of the entire incident and it was as black as hell. It is entirely not just possible but probable that Zimmerman didn't even know what Trayvon's race was initially.

    "Explain This Liberals... "

Rational Nation - Liberals? Why Liberals? Why do _YOU_ think "Liberals" have to explain/defend anything? Your position is clearly part of the choir on the extreme Right. Invariably, you carry water for the Right and then dishonestly try to portray yourself as being neutral.

The opinions of Bill Cosby and Charles Barkley are just that, opinions. Their statements are powerful and stand on their own merits. Why do _YOU_ feel others must explain/defend Cosby/Barkley?

Get a new shtick. Trying to portray yourself as being neutral simply falls on its face when so many of your posts praising people like Rep. (commie counting) West, Palin, your staunch support for Reagan even after 30 years that proved his policies wrong and harmful to the US, and other obvious kooks, tells the world you happily carry water as a member of the choir of the Right.

  7. @ Shaw: "Do young black males disproportionately suffer the brunt of this criminal justice system? Of course they do. "

Do young black males disproportionately commit violent crimes?

    Of course they do.

    There. Mystery solved.

Now, if you want to talk about how ghettoization results in social pathologies, then perhaps we have a starting point. If we can talk about how infantilizing people, instead of empowering them ultimately weakens them and imprisons them in a perpetual state of poverty and dependence, then we have a basis to proceed.

It is a human tragedy that we have people trapped in dangerous neighborhoods and shitty schools dominated by public sector crime, oops, union syndicates.

And I'm not demonizing the poor. The ritziest high school here in town had a heroin ring busted up a few years ago. And the rich neighborhoods experience sporadic jags of automobile vandalism. Rich kids, bored with their expensive electronic gadgets, no doubt.

I see. So in your narrow mind you believe ALL young black males should suffer for the crimes of those who commit them?

You are of the mentality that prompted FDR to round up all the American -Japanese because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

It's the same application of the inhuman idea of punishing everyone in a group for the crimes of those who commit them in that group.

Have we not learned anything from history? Do you not understand that when innocent young black males are seen through only a guilty lens for being black, that can affect a young mind? Do you think it could cause rage and resentment, which only leads to more criminal behavior?

    2. Shaw: Doing your best studiously ignorant kabuki, I see.

      So, I'll break it down...

You repeated someone who lamented that "young black disproportionately suffer the brunt of this criminal justice system."

I gave you the reason why. They disproportionally commit crimes compared to their percentage of the general population.

What is your remedy? Round up more white men and have the Justice Department drum up some charges so we can even things out?

Asians consistently score higher than every other demographic on standardized tests used for college entrance. So what do we do, knock some of them in the head until they as a group suffer the same percentage of stupidity as the general population?

    3. "What is your remedy? Round up more white men and have the Justice Department drum up some charges so we can even things out?"

Idiotic.suggestion. How about going after actual perpetrators and not every single young black male? That's called justice.

"Asians consistently score higher than every other demographic on standardized tests used for college entrance. So what do we do, knock some of them in the head until they as a group suffer the same percentage of stupidity as the general population?"

More stupidity. What has that to do with not stopping all young black males because some of them are criminals.

Why didn't the US stick all Americans of German descent in internment camps? They did it to the other race, Japanese.

At the height of the worst crime sprees by the Mafia, why didn't law enforcement stop ALL Italian men?

Look inside yourself and come up with the answer.

Why doesn't law enforcement stop all white collar professionals and frisk them for cocaine? They're the ones who can afford it and overwhelmingly use it?

Give me answers to these simple qustions.

    4. Another pyromaniac in a field of strawmen...

      *sigh*

Not once did I even hint that we should stop all black men. Never.

Again, I pointed out that their disproportionate representation in the criminal justice system is due to the documented fact that they disproportionately commit more crime. Period.

So now, calm yourself, turn of the "Morons Screaming Nothing But Cracker!" and then prove that law enforcement stops "all young black males" and then we can continue.

  8. Everything on this blog, and my blog, and whatever Sharpton or Jackson or Cosby or Barkley says is just that: Opinion.

I posted Geragos informed observation, which included the fact that he agreed with the verdict, but also he confirmed what he, a criminal defense attorney, sees as racial bias in the justice system as perhaps giving a balanced pov. I agree with Ema, in that you directed the two opinions by Cosby and Barkley for "Liberals" to explain. Why should liberals have to explain what two people thought of the trial?

We could probably find just as many, if not more, folks from the African American community wwho disagree with those two men.

Cosby and Barkley are discussing the trial verdict and in my opinion they are largely correct but if you in fact do possess the powers of reason you profess, you understand the issue is much larger. And there is a lot of hurt.

For one of the first times in his presidency Obama really struck me as coming from a sincere, personal space when he made his speech trying to moderate opinion and also explain the event from the perspective of the black experience. Those in the conservative blogosphere possessed of reason seem to want to deny that experience and just dump the whole tragic event on "liberals". Please, bore me later.

The error that results in cross-purposes comes from the assumptions and generalizations and prejucices (trying to avoid racism here) that come from looking at something from "perspective of the black experience".... something no one has been able to show comes into play in this incident at all.

Looking first at skin color is the coward's way out, and solves nothing. It is a step in the direction away from reason. Reason... the point of view in which we look at the facts of the incident, and the case, instead of reacting to base emotions brought on by skin color.
