THE WALL STREET JOURNAL - And when the Republicans opened the seventh seal of the sequester, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black and the stars fell unto the Earth; and our nation's ability to forecast severe weather, such as drought events, hurricanes and tornados, was seriously undermined. Lo, and the children were not vaccinated, and all the beasts starved in the zoos, and the planes were grounded.
Or so President Obama and his Cabinet prophets have been preaching ahead of the automatic budget cuts due to begin Friday. The bit about the weather is a real quote from the White House budget director.
But if any of these cataclysms do come to pass, then they will be mostly Mr. Obama's own creation. The truth is that the sequester already gives the White House the legal flexibility to avoid doom, if a 5% cut to programs that have increased more than 17% on average over the Obama Presidency counts as doom.
According to Mr. Obama and his budget office, the sequester cuts are indiscriminate and spell out specific percentages that will be subtracted from federal "projects, programs and activities," or PPAs. Except for the exemptions in the 2011 budget deal, the White House says it must now cut across the board regardless of how important a given PPA is. Food inspectors, say, will be treated the same as subsidies for millionaire farmers.

Obama was well within his presidential powers to help the "dream" generation of immigrants, like so many other presidents have used that signing power. When Congress refuses to pass legislation (whether you agree with it or not) I have no problem with the president trying to get something done (whether you agree with it or not).
ReplyDeleteIsn't the question whether or not we have a truly representative government as originally designed.? Is it not proper that the Congress, who constitutionally holds the purse strings, set sound fiscal policy, which includes enacting a realistic and responsible budget? Do you really want an Imperial presidency Anon, something you seem to imply.
DeleteIndeed, Anon, RN wants the President to do anything he wants to get "something done", no matter how destructive. Sounds like dictatorship to me. I've never called Obama a dictator, but here we have one of his supporters wanting him to become one to get around the inconvenience of having representatives Constitutionally placed in his way.
ReplyDeleteRest assured, RN. Anon is all for Obama behaving as a god-king. but as soon as a Republican or other non-leftist gets elected President, he will switch completely on this. It's not about the Constitution or the rule of law to him, but all about him wanting someone who is on his 'side' to be able to force bad policies on everyone. And only a President that is on his side.
Dictator? Bush has the record for signing statements. I wish the Congress would do something, even if I disagree with it. Using the same process presidents have used for 200 years does not make it all of a sudden a dictatorship. Your bias is showing, as usual.

I didn't call Obama a dictator, but you yourself (assuming it is the same Anon) advocated that it would be a good idea if Obama became one.
By the way, is this the same Anonymous who was caught flat-footed in the lie that Saddam had no WMD? Probably. Seems like the same guy who just makes up crap for effect. What RN terms the bobble-brain.
NO but, according to President Bush, Cheney, and the whole Bush administration, the US Army and the rest of our military services, there were no WMD's found in Iraq after a two year search by our military. I'm sure you run into many people who call you wrong on that, because you are
