Listen Up GOP...

Governor Jindal is one of the reasonable and thinking politicians in the republican party. There are others. The future of the party depends on it listening to Governor Jindal and those who share his views and recognize that indeed America and her demographics are changing. If the party expects to remain relevant and have a significant impact it simply MUST accept this reality.

Conservatism is a viable opposing political force to progressivism. Principals of a true fiscally conservative governance can work. However, if the majority of the electorate view it as essentially a special interest dedicated to the perseverance of the interests of only the wealthy class then conservatism becomes a mute point to the non wealthy. The perceptions people have are their reality. For the republican party to survive it must first change itself if it is to have a chance of changing perceptions.

Politico - Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Monday called on Republicans to “stop being the stupid party” and make a concerted effort to reach a broader swath of voters with an inclusive economic message that pre-empts efforts to caricature the GOP as the party of the rich.

In his first interview since his party’s electoral thumping last week, Jindal urged Republicans to both reject anti-intellectualism and embrace a populist-tinged reform approach that he said would mitigate what exit polls show was one of President Barack Obama’s most effective lines of attack against Mitt Romney.

“We’ve got to make sure that we are not the party of big business, big banks, big Wall Street bailouts, big corporate loopholes, big anything,” Jindal told POLITICO in a 45-minute telephone interview. “We cannot be, we must not be, the party that simply protects the rich so they get to keep their toys.”

He was just as blunt on how the GOP should speak to voters, criticizing his party for offending and speaking down to much of the electorate.

“It is no secret we had a number of Republicans damage our brand this year with offensive, bizarre comments — enough of that,” Jindal said. “It’s not going to be the last time anyone says something stupid within our party, but it can’t be tolerated within our party. We’ve also had enough of this dumbed-down conservatism. We need to stop being simplistic, we need to trust the intelligence of the American people and we need to stop insulting the intelligence of the voters.”

Calling on the GOP to be “the party of ideas, details and intelligent solutions,” the Louisianan urged the party to “stop reducing everything to mindless slogans, tag lines, 30-second ads that all begin to sound the same. “ {Read More}

A bright start in a dimming political party. Are you listening Rove, Limbaugh, Hannity, and et all? If not you sure as hell ought to be.

Oh, I almost forgot, and Eric Dondero over at Libertarian Republican as well as he seems to be gaining some notice and notoriety following the election.

  1. Jindal is my early favorite for 2016. He's done a great job in Louisiana.

Of course, the fringe nutballs will be out shouting how he's not natural born, even though the definition has never been resolved in a court of law.

    1. I hear you with that one Silver. He was born in this country. Good enough for me.

  2. Jindal, Huntsman, Christie, and Daniels are 4 pretty decent candidates, I think. The question is, are they pure enough for the average Republican primary voter?

    1. It is likely they aren't. And it is especially those folks that need to do the most "deep thinking." At least in my never humble opinion.

  3. Thank you Les, A great post. I hate to admit it, but I never heard of this guy. Definitely on the radar now.

    1. Thanks, visited your site and will be back. Jindal is a god guy, not your typical republican sheeple.

  4. For the Republican Party to follow the advice of Gov. Jindal would me they would have to refute 30 years of supply side economics, trickle down, economics, and the related "job creators" mentality.

Sage advice, but in light of the fact that hundred's of millions of dollars pour into the Republican Party coffers every year from those who benefit from the status quo, its not going to happen.

    1. Thanks for the link.

It can change, but I'm not convinced the people really have the will on either side. It will be difficult and there will be pain, and American politicians by and large are not into the truth.

Failing change the fiscal cliff will loom ever closer. Eventually we plunge over it.

    2. Any time someone mentions "supply side" and "trickle down" know that they are regurgitating red propaganda and that they neither know what they are talking about nor understand basic economics.

The opposite of "Supply Side" is Keynesian "Demand Side," which has discredited itself. Both are two sides of the same coin: State control and manipulation of money and the economy. The Keynesians would have us think that printing more money creates wealth, which is preposterous. Does shrinking the size of an inch make you taller?

Here are two article that cut through the nonsense:

      Demand Side and Supply Side

Some Thoughts on Supply Side Economics

Economic ignorance runs rampant, and that is how statists continue to get elected despite devaluing our currency and racking up more and more debt.

    3. Silver, I'll stick with Rand on capitalism and economics. Demand (or need) is the driving motive of economic expansion. Creating either artificially is never going to work long term.

  5. Jindal had his Republican moment years ago. The Republicans rejected him, we never heard from, or about him again. Republicans have had the correct message for decades (cut spending, cut taxes) but they did not follow through and have had plenty of opportunities to do so. TR had it right, just run outside the party. Paul should have this year, like he did in the 1980's.

    1. Agree with your final observation 100%.

The message has been right, the methodology and practice has been, as you indicate, wrong. Big talk zilch results. Except back in the Clinton years for a brief time.
