Religious Right Influence Keeping Republican Tent Small...

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Keeping the tent small. A strategy to deny liberty and one of political and ethical failure. But at least the socon and religious right will be kept happy.

BuzzFeed Politics - The Republican Party platform will strongly oppose the Obama administration's decision not to defend the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal law that bars recognition of same-sex couples' marriages, in court and will support "a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman," according to the draft platform language approved by subcommittees today.

The language must still be adopted by the full committee on Tuesday and then by the convention delegates in Tampa next week. According to the draft documents obtained by BuzzFeed from two subcommittees, the Restoring Constitutional Government subcommittee and the Health, Education and Crime subcommittee, the platform will take those two positions, as well as "support[ing] campaigns underway in several other states to" amend their constitutions to recognize only marriages between one mane and one woman.

As BuzzFeed first reported, the platform also includes language about "respect and dignity," which a gay Republican group, the Log Cabin Republicans, cast as an olive branch.

But social conservatives ended the day claiming victory.

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins told BuzzFeed: “You should read the entire plank on marriage, which I wrote. I feel very happy about it. I feel pretty optimistic about the outcome here.”

Calling out "an activist judiciary," the draft document blasts "court-ordered redefinition of marriage" before taking on the Obama administration.

"We oppose the Administration's open defiance of this principle [of separation of powers] — in its handling of immigration cases, in federal personnel benefits, in allowing a same-sex marriage at a military base, and in refusing to defend DOMA in the courts," the draft states.

Finally, after praising the benefits of marriage, the draft documents state, "[W]e believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage."

Isn't it time to keep the state out of religious marriage rights and the Church out of secular concerns. Same sex couples have the right to marry and have it sanctioned legally by the state. Churches are not bound to marry same sex couples if they so choose.

  1. If they did that, Les, a new party would rise throughout Jesusland, and the GOP would become a thing of the past. Remember, the GOP had to co-opt Jesusland by playing on their religious beliefs, then they could sell them their pro-wealthy agenda.

It goes like this: You love Jesus, the GOP loves Jesus, the GOP loves tax cuts and deregulation, therefore Jesus loves tax cuts and deregulation, therefore if you love Jesus, then you love tax cuts and deregulation. It's a convenient way to get working class middle-Americans to vote against their interests (racism, misogyny, and masculine insecurity in general work well too).

    1. Simply put the republican party if it were smart would live by its stated position of limited government and apply those principles to the concept of personal liberties as well.

For me classical liberalism, now shunned by the modern liberals (aka collectivists) is the only economic, social, and political philosophy that make any rational sense.

  2. Oh man, are you not posting my comments without telling me?

    Man, that would be lousy.

I really read your posts and try to engage in philosophical arguments with you. If you're just wasting my time, then please at least tell me.

And please be kind enough not to post this if you really are just banning me.

    1. I post all comments of merit in due time.

As you know I was forced to go to comment moderation because certain a'holes of the progressive collectivist Alinsky mindset choose to go over the top with their bulls**t lying and often vulgar comments. Since I am away from my computer more as of late comments often don't get posted for a few hours. I assure you unless your comment is completely off the wall, contains vulgarity, is a slander on another commenter or me, or is troll like in substance, your posts along with everyone else will get posted as soon as I get to it...

  3. I guess that the platform still has a strict ban on all abortions, even those that involve rape and incest....Kind of hard to win the moderates and libertarians with that type of rigidity, eh, Les?

    1. All I can say is the republican party has ceased to be relevant. It will lose the 2012 election because it is apparently unable too use logic and draw rational conclusions.

The socon religious right is handing the 2012 election to the collectivist democratic party on a silver platter. They are too blinded by their biblical ideology to see the forest for the trees.

I have given up believing a sense of reason will ever return to the knuckle dragging Neanderthal republican party.

I am now a full fledged Libertarian advocate and big time anti major party advocate.
