Voting Public Disaproves of Obama's Executive Order on Fast and Furious Doc's...

Liberty -vs-Tyranny

Refreshing. A majority of voters recognize the wrongheadedness of Obama's decision to invoke Executive Privilege to block the release of documents in the "Fast and Furious scandal. Whether his miscalculation will hurt him politically remains to be seen. As a majority of voters believe the Congress has been intentionally obstructive to the President it will likely be a wash.

The Hill - A clear majority of likely voters believes President Obama has exercised his executive power inappropriately — particularly in blocking the release of documents relating to "Operation Fast and Furious," according to a new poll for The Hill.

But in a sign that the electorate’s frustration extends to Capitol Hill, voters by a significant margin also feel Congress has behaved in an obstructionist manner toward the president.

Amid the discontent over the behavior of both Obama and members of Congress, the poll found a strong preference among voters for a return to one-party rule in Washington.

Obama last week invoked executive privilege to stop certain Justice Department documents relating to the botched “gun-walking” operation from being disclosed to the House Oversight and Government Reform committee.

The same panel, chaired by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), voted along party lines to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress.

The Hill Poll found that likely voters disapproved by an almost 2-to-1 margin of Obama’s assertion of presidential power in the case. Overall, 56 percent of voters disapproved of his action, while only 29 percent approved.

Democrats have accused Issa of waging a partisan campaign that has no real purpose save for embarrassing Obama and Holder.
Issa has always denied his pursuit of Holder is politically driven.

“Our purpose has never been to hold the attorney general in contempt,” he said last week. “Our purpose has always been to get the information the committee needs to complete its work — that it is not only entitled to do, but obligated to do.”

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that “the assertion of privilege has to do with the absolute necessity of retaining the executive branch’s independence.”

The defense is not proving an easy sell with voters, particularly independents.

Sixty-one percent of independents said they disapproved of the president’s actions, and just 25 percent approved. {Read More}

  1. Oh c'mon. This is news? If you sell something as nefarious on the popular TV news all day, it becomes a big issue.

Fast and Furious was the offspring of an international sting dating back to the Bush administration.

The only difference between Fast and Furious and the prior program (I forgot the name at the moment), was the circumnavigation of parts of the Mexican government to see where the corruption was connected.

It was an interesting idea. The way it was actualized was stupid and counter-productive to say the least. It cost an American his life, and perhaps up to two hundred other people, including possibly more Americans.

But when you think about the cost to Mexicans, this becomes a mass murder.

When the story hit, Holder pretty much immediately ended the program and began investigating why such a tragically stupid idea was implemented.

He released piles of department information to Issa, et al, and spelled it out to them live many times in congress. And to think gun, or drug, or numbers, or prostitute, or spy "running" hasn't been in the toolkit of unconstitutional "law enforcement" forever is to be either a liar or a moron.

There's a big downside, I think, for conservatives, libertarians and Republicans...

The GOP mouth pieces won't let this go, but they have a problem - this smacks of the anti-immigrant nonsense of the first half of the new millennium. Big mistake.

Think about it - guns to Mexicans. Sounds like baiting to me.

    1. Whatever Jersey. I just reported the article here, happen to see it as accurate. Fine by me if you wish to hold to leftist BS line.

Oh yeah, be sure to Blame it on Bush. You lefties will never get off that milk train now will you? I guess it's to be expected as the ObamaBots have nothing else. Now do they?

  3. "Oh yeah, be sure to Blame it on Bush."

Why do you and other conservatives continue blaming the blamers who blame Bush?

    1. Because we (and I am a classical liberal Shaw... fiscally conservative, socially libertarian or liberal leaning... I realize this fact has escaped your otherwise scrutinizing eyes) are just tired of the far out lefties like you blaming Bush for everything even after Obama has been in office for nearly four years..

It is time Obama and his ObamaBots start to accept some responsibility for the fact things still suck and that they in fact have and continue to make mistakes. As they have with regards to Fast and Furious.

Bush is history, and it was not a particularly good history by any stretch. But isn't it time to run on Obama's own record, such as it is rather than continuing to blame Bush.

Romney at this point is far game and I don't believe I have advocated Romney here, there, or anywhere.

      Get a grip girl...

  4. Oops! This didn't get on my comment. Don't know what happened:

Poll: Voters Disapprove Of Obama's Exercise Of Executive Privilege · Doug Mataconis · Monday ... Americans Still Blame Bush More Than Obama For State Of The Economy

Your fellow Americans are blamers! Oh my!

  5. You've clearly guzzled the Kool-Aid on this one, JM. a) The Bush operation (Wide Receiver) was less than 1/4 the size of Fast and Furious. b) The Bush operation was done in total concert with the Mexican authorities. And c) Operation Wide Receiver was NOT a gun walking enterprise. It was a controlled delivery in which a lot of the guns had radio tracking devices and none of them were allowed to cross the border into Mexico. The fact that people like you and Maddow are somehow trying to blame the Bushies even for this is utterly mind-boggling.
