Mitt Romney... President has Unilateral Power to Act Militarily

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Fast forward to the 12 minute 17 second marker on the video and hear what presidential candidate Mitt Romney had to say to Bob Schieffer on how he believes the President has the power to act unilaterally with respect to military action, specifically (in this case) Iran. Possibly another cowboy (GWB)?

So much for the Constitution and or the War Powers Resolution of 1973. This Romney dude could turn out to be a real loose cannon.

Face the Nation - SCHIEFFER: Let me turn to foreign policy. Bill Kristol, writing in the Weekly Standard this week, says we are reaching the time of consequence in our dealing with Iran on nuclear weapons. He says it is time for the President to go to the Congress and say, “I want you to authorize me to be able to use military force” if that becomes necessary. And he says if the President is not willing to do that, then the Congress should do it themselves. What's your take on that?

ROMNEY: Well, I can understand the reason for his recommendation and his concern. I think he's recognized that this president has communicated that in some respects, well, he might even be more worried about Israel taking direct military action than he is about Iran becoming nuclear. That's the opinion of some who watch this. And so he wants the President to take action that shows that a military Iran, that a nuclear Iran is unacceptable.

And I believe it's important for us to communicate that. I can assure you if I’m president, the Iranians will have no question but that I will be willing to take military action if necessary to prevent them from becoming a nuclear threat to the world. I don't believe at this stage, therefore, if I'm president that we need to have a war powers approval or special authorization for military force. The President has that capacity now. I understand that some in the Senate for instance have written letters to the President indicating you should know that a containment strategy is unacceptable.

We cannot survive a course of action would include a nuclear Iran we must be willing to take any and all actions. All those actions must be on the table.

The reality is that it is fairly certain President Obama, given circumstances he felt warranted a unilateral decision for military would take the same position. The concept of Congress, as representatives of the people having the sole authority to authorize the use of aggression against another sovereign nation seems to be passe in modern times. Every since the explosion of the Military Industrial Complex following World War II this nation has steadily and methodically moved with stealth along its current path. President Dwight David Eisenhower warned the nation against the threat of the Military Industrial Complex in 1961. Apparently most were tuned out.

  1. Just what we need, another trigger-happy Commander in Chief. Counting Obama (and, yes, I would definitely count him), that would make 3 in a row.

  2. Obama did not start any wars (not trigger happy) he is ending wars started by Bush. His success is embarrassing Republicans. Touting that he got Bin Laden, is an election winning fact. Ending the war in Iraq, is an election winning fact. He stopped kissing Pakistan's ass and showed them, that he will attack within their country, if they are harboring terrorists. As commander and chief, taking military action to protect America, is legal for the president. Declaring war is not. If Congress disagrees, they can cut the money for whatever, or like Reagan, a president can break the laws of America to reach his goal.

    1. Obama:
      extended Bush's patriot act
      started a war in Libya
signed the NDAA into law on New year's of this year, which expands the "war on terror" to include the entire globe as the "battlefield". If you have not read this law, you need to. He has also given himself the authority to murder anyone simply considered a 'suspect'. He has used it at least 3 times that we know of, including ordering the killing of a 16 year old boy by drone.
started a covert drone war in Yemen
escalated the proxy war in Somalia
      escalated the war in Afghanistan
secretly deployed US special forces in 75 countries
sold 30 billion in weapons to the dictatorship in Saudi Arabia
signed an agreement for 7 military bases in Columbia
opened a military base in Chile
maintains a presence in Iraq after "ending" the war..
shall i go on? Because there is more.

And Romney's policies do not differ from Obama's.
