Liberty -vs- Tyranny

Ex Minnesota Republican Governor Jesse Ventura saying it as well as I've heard it said. Hats off to Governor Ventura. Who by the way left the republican party to join the Independence Party of Minnesota in 2000.

Post Bulletin - Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura said both he and former first lady Terry Ventura have pledged to do whatever they can to help defeat a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage.

"I certainly hope that people don't amend our constitution to stop gay marriage because, number one, the constitution is there to protect people — not oppress them," Ventura said during a recent interview. He will be at the Barnes & Noble at Apache Mall at 7 p.m. today for a book signing.

In November, Minnesota voters will decide whether to amend the state's constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman.

Ventura said the issue is personal for him because when he was a professional wrestler he had a friend who was gay who had been with his partner for more than 20 years. When his friend's partner got sick, he was unable to be by his bedside because hospital rules allowed only spouses or next of kin.

"And because they are not allowed to be married, he's neither. That's cruel," he said.

Ventura said he believes the majority should not be able to make decisions about the civil rights of a minority. {Read More}

  2. well, that is his right but he is using arguments of emotion rather than rational arguments for his reasons for doing so.

This is emotion. Right Griper. or is it that it doesn't fit the Neanderthal knuckle dragging model?

  3. He also pledged to leave the US to become a Mexican citizen, or run for President, I assume he meant one or the other...

He also got decked at a Navy SEAL bar awhile back for stupidly running his mouth, which he is good at.

He's a nutball, but he's right that a "marriage amendment" doesn't belong in our constitution.

All that aside, the chances of such an amendment coming to pass are zero.

Probably Silver, but there are a lot of nutballs in quite a few states who no doubt will keep trying.

I call these posts "stemming the nutballs." Or "response to the Neanderthals"

  4. its an false appeal to emotion, yes, Les. marriage is a collective behavior and rights are given to individuals not collectives. when someone can marry himselves or herself then you might have a rights issue.

and this is also an apppeal to emotion:
"Ventura said the issue is personal for him because when he was a professional wrestler he had a friend who was gay who had been with his partner for more than 20 years. When his friend's partner got sick, he was unable to be by his bedside because hospital rules allowed only spouses or next of kin."

its also a falsehood too. if he wasn't allowed visitation privileges then it was the patient that decided, not the hospital. the only way it could have been the hospital's decision is if the patient could not speak for himself. its a privacy issue.

Individuals within marriages have rights as individuals, as well as "collective rights." Who you chose as an individual as your partner is your right as an individual. You are to busy philosophizing in a world of fog trying to make a pointless point for me to take this seriously.

People have emotion. As a man much wiser than either you or I once told me emotion controlled and tempered by rational and logical thought can in fact a positive force. I've learned there is truth to that statement. Twist it as you might Griper but most will agree with the wiser man.

Since neither know for a fact what the actual circumstances were Ventura speaks to with reference to his friend I just took him at his word. You may e right Griper, but who the hell really cares? That is not the central issue.

At any rate, at least as far as I am concerned this discussion has pretty much wrapped up. Tyranny takes many forms Griper. Either you are on the side of individualism and liberty or you're not. Make up tour mind.

  5. i guess, you are right, there is no need for further discussion and i am advocating individualism. i just do not mix individualism in with collectivism like you are doing.

and you are right, tyranny takes many forms and the worst form is the granting of rights to collectives. but as you say, this discussion is over.

I do not mix individualism with collectivism as a preferred reality Griper. I do however realize the existence of collectivism and within the framework of getting a damn thing done it must be understood, and there is little choice but to work with the reality.

As to you advocating individualism, I'm sure you do, in a convoluted word salad sort of way.

Explain how it is you can avoid granting rights to collectives Griper, please do if you choose.

We do not live in a vacuum where there is no social interaction, nor is it realistic to believe that individuals will not bind together to achieve the greatest benefit for each individual in a society. New York City would not yet be built if it was but for the the effort of a single individual.

I suppose I've given you more fodder for a greater word salad even yet. But Griper there is philosophy, through which we attempt to generate ideas that are perhaps pure and most desirable (Ayn Rand's Objectivism and the concept of rational self interest for example), and then there is the real world in which we must function and interact.

I shall leave it to you where you take this.
