For Those Who Value Freedom of Choice and Personal Liberty Santorum is One Frightening Dude... Irrespective of Party Affiliation

Liberty -vs- Tyranny

It has been said that the basic difference between the republican party and the democratic party is this... the democratic party wants to control your wallets and or pocketbooks, the republican party your personal life, particularly your sex life.

The party professing the moral high ground also just happens to be a party of hypocrites. Frankly the truth is... well, there is truth in the foregoing observation if it is modified just a bit.

Both parties want into the wallets and pocketbooks of the citizenry, They both will willing spend money we don't have, the difference is in the detail. Democrats want to expand social legislation and programs and pay for it by increased taxation. Republicans want the greatest world police force and military and will pay for it through borrowing. Neither are averse to deficit Keynesian spending when it fits their agenda. Either way the country continues its reckless descent towards the abyss.

Barry Goldwater said, and I paraphrase, effective governance demands compromise. It seems many in Washington (perhaps most), as well as those in the general population are tone deaf to Goldwater's words. The result? Our country has paid, and is paying a heavy toll. One that will ultimately rest on the shoulders of our children and grandchildren.

It seems republicans and conservatives, especially the socons {ie: social conservatives, evangelical fundamentalists et all} have decided because of their unique and close relationship with God, and therefore their privileged understanding of his desires for us all, ought to be the ones determining the nations morality. Based of course on religion. Specifically their religion.

Rick Santorum is just one glaring, and very frightening example of this mindset. A mindset that is uncompromising, sometimes irrational, and certainly with ideas of controlling and limiting the right of every individual to lead their personal lives as they see fit. Even when they are injuring no one and are respecting the rights of others.

Excerpt from an interview Santorum gave last October. From Caffeinated Thoughts an Evangelical blog.

One of the things I will talk about that no President has talked about before is I think the dangers of contraception in this country, the whole sexual libertine idea. Many in the Christian faith have said, “Well, that’s okay. Contraception’s okay.”

It’s not okay because it’s a license to do things in the sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be. They’re supposed to be within marriage, they are supposed to be for purposes that are, yes, conjugal, but also [inaudible], but also procreative. That’s the perfect way that a sexual union should happen. We take any part of that out, we diminish the act. And if you can take one part out that’s not for purposes of procreation, that’s not one of the reasons, then you diminish this very special bond between men and women, so why can’t you take other parts of that out? And all of a sudden, it becomes deconstructed to the point where it’s simply pleasure. And that’s certainly a part of it—and it’s an important part of it, don’t get me wrong—but there’s a lot of things we do for pleasure, and this is special, and it needs to be seen as special.

Again, I know most Presidents don’t talk about those things, and maybe people don’t want us to talk about those things, but I think it’s important that you are who you are. I’m not running for preacher. I’m not running for pastor, but these are important public policy issues. These how profound impact on the health of our society.

Rick Santorum is just one example of what is meant by... the republican party and socons want to control your personal life, particularly your sex life.

If given only the choice between Santorum (or one like him) sitting in the top most powerful job in the nation, or a reasonable, rational, and responsible liberal I believe I know what the obvious choice must be.

I simply value my personal liberty and freedom of choice way too much to move backwards in time or approach the tyranny that theocracy has rendered wherever i has gained control of the levers of governance.

  1. ...reasonable, rational, and responsible liberal

Good luck finding one of those!

Has Santorum said he would propose any legislation to enforce these ideas of his, or has he simply implied he would use the bully pulpit?

I agree the president should stay out of our lives, but it is an important distinction. Talking about something is a far cry from implementing a theocracy.

  2. RN - You can tell Truth that I am not gonna forget this. I will

    1. Sue - I just did by way of publishing your comment here, for the second time. I'm not sure how often Joe visits, but I don't think it's much.

Anyway, I not really a messenger service. Perhaps he will receive your messages, perhaps not. At any rate RN postal service is officially closed.

  3. Of course. However, he is agenda driven, a nutcase, and by far worse than any reasonable, rational, and responsible liberal. I know this because in fact I have personally known SOME. I am quite sure you have too.

Santorum doesn't have a frigging clue what classical liberalism is, or was. Therefore he has no clue or idea what the founders stood for and against. The dude would likely have been a Tory and he would have been no doubt have been a member in good standing of The Church of England. Keeping em barefoot and pregnant. Among other things I suspect.

When it comes to the fight for individual freedoms and liberties people and personalities really don't matter, IDEAS do. Sanatorium's ideas are among other things statist, wrongly judgmental, and reasonable, rational, and responsible conservatives, Libertarians, whatever should make sure he and his dangerous ideas go the way his prior senate term went... to a short and quick closure. The sooner forgotten the better.

Did I mention he is not a fiscal conservative? Check it out. Just another reason to send him packing.

  4. Silver, Santorum has long been know as a fringe religious-right firebrand. Obama would beat Santorum in the general election because independents would generally react to him the way Les does. With Santorum in the White House, and the GOP on the Hill, the courts would be packed with fringe religious-right firebrands, and our rights would be in jeopardy. I believe most independents would take Obama, a very reasonable, rational, moderate Democrat by any sane person's standard, over Santorum, and that's the key to victory. That's one of the main reasons Obama beat McCain - McCain was old, his health was questionable, and he picked a fringe religious-right firebrand to be his veep. Independents were appalled, and Obama won the election.

    So, please, SUPPORT SANTORUM! LOL!

  5. I have said, in many places, Santorum is dangerous. plain and simple. a disgrace to the American political process, the Republican Party and any thinking individual. His rhetoric is bald faced pandering to an ignorant populace.... the kind that views 'American Idol' as quality programming.

Gees...as president, would he mandate that all vasectomies be reversed? Let him really put his balls on the line.

  6. At least he has expressed his personal beliefs and not hidden them until after he gets elected, which he will not. He has stated he will not try to implement these ideas but this is what he believes. Obama believes that the majority of Americans are far better off if the government makes decisions for them and takes care of all their needs. The problem the country faces is there is not a candidate capable of beating Obama. He has millions in funds, all of the media on his side who will campaign for him for free and a network of workers to pound the streets for him. The Republicans have Romney who is ashamed of the wealth he earned, Santorum who preaches religious right, Paul who is scares people because he is smart, tells the truth and will shake up the political system and Newt who is so involved in Newt he can't see straight.

  7. RN - Sorry.

    Thanks for everything.

  8. Wow, the anti-contraception candidate (in addition to being a neocon and a pork addict). What'll the Republicans think of next, I wonder.

  9. Well said. Santorum is the death of conservatism. He represents socialism and cronyism in the economic sphere, adventurism in foreign policy, and his social policy is cultish. He's repeatedly getting caught making statements that women should not be employed, that sex outside of procreation is "unnatural" and should not be allowed, that gays need to be driven from society and that all this country needs to fix itself is a theocracy. He think there is good capitalism and bad capitalism. He's strongly pro-union. He's never voted against a single spending program.

I am not kidding when I say I will vote for Obama before Santorum.
