Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY) sarcastically ranting on the floor of the House over the very rational move to defund NPR.

.

Of course the government never should have gotten into the business of funding news outlets in the first place. Period.

  1. Are you scandalizing Click and Clack?

  2. I love the Maliozzi brothers! They are so good, they could stand on their own without government funding. (Yes, I listen to NPR. I used to love Prairie Home Companion until the egotistical goober ruined it with overt anti-bush snideness that he thought was humor.)

  3. Official government media fits better in a place like North Korea, not a democracy/republic that has a First Amendment.

  4. TAO - No, just reporting it how I see it. Click and Clack obviously are not the issue.

  5. Silver - You reinforced the point quite nicely methinks.

  6. dmarks - Bingo. Government funding of any media source should be expressly off limits.

However, having said that NPR is a far cry from the North Korean state run media.

  7. With thousands of channels on cable these days, I just don't see the need for a state sponsored network. As for the excellent shows on public broadcasting, I can't see a reason why another channel couldn't pick them up.

  8. Hmm, let sit back and think for a minute...

Comparing NPR and PBS to state sponsored, aka North Korean media? Exactly what propaganda purpose does Click and Clack serve? Or Sesame Street, or Masterpiece Theatre?

I never saw Victory Garden or This Old House as propaganda....no matter how I try I cannot see how Keeping Up Appearences, which is a great sitcom from the BBC could be considered a communist plot.

Then of course with public broadcasting being "state sponsored" one would be assuming that they get ALL their funding from the state....

    Thats not the case.

With so many cable stations out there you wonder why Click and Clack haven't sold out...I mean they are great and wouldn't someone out there want to offer them a mega bucks contract to jump ship? Why would they or any of the other programs on NPR and or PBS not want to jump ship for the big bucks of cable?

Why doesn't Steve Ease sell his travel show to the Travel Channel?

I don't know why you all are not up in arms over the fact that we have state sponsored universities, community college, and votech schools?

I mean if a community wants a college let them pay for it or if businesses need trained workers then by god, let them pay to train their own employees.

Lets do away with student loans and grants, and put an end to the GI Bill....

Lets just run government like a business.

  9. Sorry, I should have said state subsidized.......We all draw a line somewhere, Tao. I draw mine at broadcasting. It's just not a necessity, period.......And I don't understand your point. Because somebody wants to cut spending somewhere, that de facto means that they should also want to take a meat axe and cut it everywhere. It doesn't make any sense.

  10. TAO,

    >>Lets do away with student loans and grants, and put an end to the GI Bill....
    --------------------

Sorry. You hit a nerve. The GI Bill is earned through the sacrifice of self, selfishness, family, normalcy, holidays, sleep, food, a 5-day workweek, and comfort.

I earned every. single.penny. I signed up for.

The GI Bill is nothing like govt. student loans and grants, which are usually given to future stars of Girls Gone Wild because they apparently cannot earn a scholarship or get a job to pay for school. (Okay, I'm being facetious here. But I think the govt. enables the entitlement mentality.)

Thanks for listening to my tirade.

  11. Thank you Donald...thank you. You know, I am a business owner and sacrificed the exact things that you did for a much longer period than you did and you know what I get from the government? A tax bill and I get the IRS visiting.

The government does not "enable" the reality is we "enable" the entitlement mentality: Everyone has a way to justify why their "entitlement" is earned and others are not. Wall Street can make a really good argument as to why they are entitled to a bail out. Jesus, the idea that corporations and or rich people are entitled to not pay taxes because they create jobs...

One mans "right" is another's entitlement.

  12. TAO - In a democratic republic, which we are, we are the government I agree.

Unfortunately, and I know you will disagree, the people of this nation became fat and lazy some time ago. No longer are we a nation of hard working proud individuals that ask for nothing save an opportunity to earn an honest buck through hard work.

And I put Wall Street and the "snake oil salesmen" of the financial world at the top of the above list. Along with the government "employees" who now act like they think they are are masters rather than our employees.

And frankly Unions and the bosses who run them share some responsibility as well. I have worked my whole life either as a union member (when I was younger) or a supervisor manager in manufacturing. The fact, (or reality), is that unions spend more time protecting the least deserving than they do representing the most deserving.Which is the majority of american laborers and technicians.

Frankly if management and unions in America would stop seeing each other as enemy #1, and view each other more as they do in Europe we would likely be a da*n site better off.

I suppose I now will take some heat from other conservatives. And this is a bit off topic. However Donald and you started the thread of thought which brought me here.

Reality... We The People, the Leviathan Federal Government, the labor unions, and business all share in the "entitlement mentality."

It is what I rail against. It is why I am a Rand advocate, and it is why I, (like you I think), long for a true honest capitalist society. Free of the b*llsh*t that has corrupted the system that generated the greatest wealth the world has ever know. And in reality, and as a result, raised the standard of living for millions upon millions of people.

  13. TAO,

    >>You know, I am a business owner and sacrificed the exact things that you did for a much longer period than you did and you know what I get from the government?
    ------------------

Please, sir...stop right there. YOu would presume to empathize and even take on an air of superiority over your sacrifice being more than mine? Allow me to ask: Did you running your business ever take place at the end of a barrel pointed at you, with murderous words being leveled at you in a language older than English? Did you sleep with one eye open at night, wondering if the Kurds would slit your throat for money from the Islamofascists? Did you ever look across an open plain wondering where the hell the mines were? Did you ever crouch in the freezing cold of the desert, for hours, watching and waiting for movement from the enemy, knowing that if you made the wrong move your position would be compromised? Did your business ventures ever take you away from civilization, with no phones, no mail service, no Internet, no electricity, and no fresh water?

    I highly doubt this.

So, while I can appreciate that you did make "sacrifices", none of them threatened your life. Please do not seek to make us equals based on sacrifices, sir. My boots simply will not fit on your feet.

My sacrifices earned me that GI Bill. And then some.

Pardon the curtness, but you pissed me off. Now that I have had the chance to vent, my anger has been satiated.
