Select Section from Anti Federalist #6.

Federalist Papers versus Anti Federalist papers. Reasoned thought and opposing arguments on critical issues before the American people prior to ratification of our Constitution. Are they still germain today?

The following excerpt from Anti Federalist #6 addresses the issue of abolition of states rights and alludes{at least in this writer's opinion} to the possibility of civil war.

You my readership be the judge.
This power, exercised without limitation, will introduce itself into every comer of the city, and country — It will wait upon the ladies at their toilett, and will not leave them in any of their domestic concerns; it will accompany them to the ball, the play, and the assembly; it will go with them when they visit, and will, on all occasions, sit beside them in their carriages, nor will it desert them even at church; it will enter the house of every gentleman, watch over his cellar, wait upon his cook in the kitchen, follow the servants into the parlour, preside over the table, and note down all he eats or drinks; it will attend him to his bed-chamber, and watch him while he sleeps; it will take cognizance of the professional man in his office, or his study; it will watch the merchant in the counting-house, or in his store; it will follow the mechanic to his shop, and in his work, and will haunt him in his family, and in his bed; it will be a constant companion of the industrious farmer in all his labour, it will be with him in the house, and in the field, observe the toil of his hands, and the sweat of his brow; it will penetrate into the most obscure cottage; and finally, it will light upon the head of every person in the United States. To all these different classes of people, and in all these circumstances, in which it will attend them, the language in which it will address them, will be GIVE! GIVE!
A power that has such latitude, which reaches every person in the community in every conceivable circumstance, and lays hold of every species of property they possess, and which has no bounds set to it, but the discretion of those who exercise it[,] I say, such a power must necessarily, from its very nature, swallow up all the power of the state governments.
I shall add but one other observation on this head, which is this — It appears to me a solecism, for two men, or bodies of men, to have unlimited power respecting the same object. It contradicts the scripture maxim, which saith, "no man can serve two masters," the one power or the other must prevail, or else they will destroy each other, and neither of them effect their purpose. It may be compared to two mechanic powers, acting upon the same body in opposite directions, the consequence would be, if the powers were equal, the body would remain in a state of rest, or if the force of the one was superior to that of the other, the stronger would prevail, and overcome the resistance of the weaker.

  1. Are you against the US Constitution? Because that's what the Anti-Federalist Papers explicitly concern.

  2. JMJ,

Yes. Les hates the US Constitution. It is so obvious. Thank you for "outing" him and his anti-American mindset seething with hatred and vitriol towards all things American.

  3. JMJ - Think outside the box my friend. The Federalist Papers and the Anti Federalist papers were the expression of divergent thoughts and valid concerns from both sides of the political thought spectrum of the day.

Not unlike that which we are experiencing today.

The drafting of the constitution ultimately took into account the valid concerns expressed by the Anti Federalist.

No I am not against the U.S. Constitution, are you?

Donald - Thank you. Sometimes sarcasm can be very effective. You use it well.

  4. JMJ,

I am writing to apologize for my blatant and uncalled for snarkiness. I don't know you, you don't know me, and it was poor form for me to mock you like I did.

    I apologize.

Ever since I wrote what I wrote it has bothered me. RNUSA is an honorable site, and Les is a very reasonable fellow. My sarcasm, (while Les didn't think it too horrible), was childish and immature. Again, JMJ, I apologize if I came across like some jackass.

I do not wish to stifle conversation.

Les, thanks for RNUSA! It really is one of the few blogs out here that remains uncluttered or tainted.

  5. Thank you Donald.

I am doing my best (sometimes it requires great self restraint)to keep RN USA as you say. It however does nothing to increase traffic, win friends, or influence people.

But I sleep at night anyway.
