Arizona Immigration Law Supported By Majority Of Americans

CBS, a bastion of liberal journalists, editors, and media executives just published the poll numbers to your right. And it is clear the majority of Americans favor Arizona Senate Bill 1020 that was just signed into law.

One can only imagine the mood at CBS as they published the results. While it likely comes as no surprise to the average person a majority of Americans favor strong and effective immigration law the progressives in the lame stream media are no doubt aghast and dumbfounded. As I read the results it is clear the sentiment is strong in support of tougher measures. In fact a full nine percent favor even tougher immigration policy.

I would think it reasonable to believe the nine percent who favor even tougher law would acknowledge that lacking such they favor SB 1020 over what existed before its signing into law by the  Governor. So given the fifty one percent that believe SD 1020 is "about right", coupled with the nine percent that say it "doesn't go far enough", a full sixty percent of Americans back the effort to halt and control illegal immigration. Taking a stretch it is possible the four percent that "don't know" may be split as to their leanings. Given this it is possible sixty two percent favor SB 1020. In either case could it be said Americans who are in favor of controlling illegal immigration and SB 1020 constitute a super majority?

Now for a bit of CBS spin...

Despite their expectations that it will burden police departments and disproportionately affect certain ethnic groups, a slim majority of Americans believe the controversial illegal immigration measure recently signed into law in Arizona is "about right" in it's approach, according to a newly - released CBS/New York Times poll.

I guess the guys and gals in progressive la la land just can't help themselves. I am quite sue they are in denial and believe if only they spin hard enough the majority will see the light.

And of course the "critics" of the law weigh in with this...

Fifty-one percent of those surveyed say the law, which critics say essentially mandates racial profiling, takes the right approach, and nine percent say it should go even further.

Hmm... I have read Arizona Senate Bill 1070 and it absolutely does not, I repeat does not, mandate racial profiling. But in the minds of the delusional I guess any spin is acceptable if it serves the cause. For those interested the bill can be found here.

Here is the full article from CBS. Over at the New York Times the progressive Spin Meister(s) have weighed in as well. All in all it is a bit depressing

  1. It just goes to show that 62% of Americans are racists who don't care about the under privileged people in the developing world who only want sanctuary -- and-- free medical care, free Social Security benefits, a driver's license even though they can't read a single street sign, the benefits of US Citizenship without the burden of paying taxes and contributing to society, etc.

  2. It SHOULD mandate every type of profiling that is found to be a common factor among illegal aliens. How can you be serious about finding bad guys if you don't create and utilize a thorough profile of the habitual perpetrators? The profiling shouldn't just be skin color, however, not because it's "racist" (which is completely irrelevant), but because it's incomplete.

  3. It's not as simple as liberals portray. Wanting the border secured is not racist.

  4. LL - I know. We are such uncaring capitalist pigs. I mean really, shouldn't everyone be entitled to the same... regardless of their contribution or lack thereof.

  5. Bastiatarian - But sir, the rationality of what you say is just so sensible. The government/media complex cannot possibly be expected to comprehend such reason.

  9. In response to LL: you are quick to cite illegal immigrants as those who aren't "contributing to society" or paying taxes. What about the fact that the prices we pay for everything from produce to clothing is lower because of our migrant work force. What about the fact that there are millions of dollars put into social security by illegal immigrants who use false social security numbers? Granted, immigration is a complex issue, but you assessment of illegal immigrants are just taking from the system and not giving to it is a partial assessment at best.

To Bastiatarian: Your logic that because "habitual perpetrators" exist of one ethnic group, we should therefore use skin color as a basis for traffic stops or questioning is dangerously akin, if not identical to the rationality of those who advocate for racial profiling.

Ignoring, for the moment, that racial profiling has been clearly ruled unconstitutional, and has been shot down by the Supreme Court in many cases, one should understand that in the United States we do not use skin color as a basis for the removal of rights. Just because someone is of a certain ethnicity does not justify that they are treated differently in terms of civil rights. To do so would be to regress to the pre-civil rights area and the pre brown vs. board of education days
