                                                     Is There A Correlation?

The invasion of Afghanistan by the U.S. and the allied coalition following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the United States was a neccessary and wholly justified responsee to an unprovoked act of aggression. Because we took our eye off the primary perpetrator, Osama Bin Laden, he is still at large today, in so far as we know.

Following our military actions in Afghanistan, President G.W. Bush and the United States Congress authorized military action against the state of Iraq. The sole justification offered was that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction and therefor posed a national security risk to the United States and a threat to the world at large. Weapons of mass destruction have to this day yet to be found.  We are still in Iraq and will gradually phase out our troops.

With a corrupt regime in Afghanistan and a resurgent Taliban the fighting continues. Our military commander requested an increase of approximately 40,000 + additional troops three months ago. President Obama finally made the decision to send 30,000 more troops. Along with this decision he annouced that troop withdrawels would begin in July of 2011. Many question the wisdom of telegraphing your strategic and tactical plans to the enemy.

The preceeding thoughts crossed my mind (in much greater detail) following President Obama's speech at West Point Monday evening. At this juncture there has been criticism of the president's decision from both Democrats and Republics. Of course the presidents has his supporters on this as well, despite the fact when he was campaigning he sent other messages.

The purpose for this post is not to express my views or opinions, although I have many, but rather it is to provoke thought by presenting remarks from Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell speech to the nation in 1961. As I pondered the possibilities why President Obama decided as he did I recalled President Eisenhower remarks. Perhaps they help explain Obama's decision this week, and indeed President Bush's decision with respect to the Iraq invasion.

And now, President Dwight D. Eisenhower's remarks.

This next video, based on Eisenhower's remarks, is scathing and certain to offend the sensibilities of many. It is presented here without comment, either pro or con, but simply to provoke thought.

  1. This is a great post, it is amazing to hear Eisenhower speak to such libertarian ideals, truly thought provoking. I love the way you put this all together!

  2. Thanks LCR. Where are those with such ideals, stature, and authority today?

  3. Exactly! This is not designed to keep America safe (otherwise we'd be surging where the Al-Qaeda remnants are near the Pakistan border), but to line the coffers of the corporate lobbyists who profit from the death of our finest young men and women and bankruptcy of our nation's treasury.
